"I don't hate Mitt," Letterman said, referencing secretly-recorded comments Romney made at a fundraiser.
In the video posted online by left-leaning magazine Mother Jones, Romney talks about appearing on evening shows.
"I've been on Letterman a couple of times. I've been on Leno more than a couple times, and now Letterman hates me because I've been on Leno more than [on] him," Romney says. "They're very jealous of one another, as you know."
President Barack Obama, appearing on Letterman's show Tuesday, criticized Romney for other comments the candidate made in the fundraiser.
In an online advance clip of his Wednesday program, Letterman made light of the comments and invites Romney to appear on his show.
"I think now more than ever he and his lovely wife, Mrs. Mitt are more than welcome to come on the show," Letterman said. "If you think you're going to get to the White House, you've got to spend time in this chair."
He made a jab at his fellow late-night comedian, saying that he doesn't hate Romney for his appearances on Leno, because "why hate a guy who's suffered through that?"
Letterman also sized up the industry.
Television comedians, he joked, are "very jealous and bitter and backbiting... unlike politics."

Everyone who dislikes you, Mittens, is not jealous of you. Some of us just think you're a smug out-of-touch entitled jerk.
@MarieMD – The reality is: Romney does not just give charity to his own church but even if he did, it is STILL charity. And, I was speaking more about character. If you take a look at Letterman's past perhaps you would see what I'm talking about...but then to most liberals, sexual immorality is irrevelent when judging character.
Sheesh. He even managed to insult talk show hosts?
Letterman – you rock! Leno is a rock.
@ChristopherM
Romney didn't say anyone was jealous of him. Besides, the "jealous" comment reads as a joke...as it should because who really cares what Letterman's political views are, anyways?
Does the word HATE have the same meaning to Mitt as it does to us? I mean how can a normal person go around saying he is being hated when what he has done is said? The guys spews toxic everytime he opens his mouth. How can a person be such negative all the time?
I too feel sorry for him. There's a richness to life lived without special advantages over everyone else, legally codified special privileges and not being born on third base thinking you hit a triple that he will never ever know or understand.
I feel sorry for Letterman, he's become such a bitter old man. When the hate and vitriol sneak through the jokes, it's no longer funny. Maybe he needs to find a new subordinate to have an affair with.
Who cares what Letterman thinks. Sure Obama is making his TV/Radio circuit. I'd rather see him in Washington trying to fix this economy. America has a celebrity-in-chief in the office, not a leader.
Letterman was a big reason McCain lost in 2008 (he had to fly back to D.C., but he didn't). Now Romney is dumb enough to take him on. Romney = Worst candidate EVER!
Reality for you
Letterman feels sorry for Romney? Romney has a lovely wife and family, has spent most of his life giving to charity and helping those in need, is a successful businessman, and Letterman feels SORRY for him? Envious is more like it...just like the other liberals.

Here's a reality check for you....pssst...you are little too wrap up these folks emotions.
The Romney campaign was doomed from the start. You can't hope to appeal to the hateful, bigoted, under-educated right-wing and then shift-gears, Etch-A-Sketching to appeal to the independent voters and Republicans who don't support the radical extremists of the Tea Party. You can't insult the intelligence of thinking-voters by telling them obstructionism was actually good for America, and asking them simply to ignore the failures of the Bush Administration that started the recession. You can't lie to them in every speech and expect them to respect your character.
I don't feel sorry for Mitt, he is an incompetent. What's amazing is that anyone with half a brain would vote for him! You can tell a lot about a candidate and how he/she will lead by the way the run their campaign! When Conservative pundits, like Peggy Noonan is calling the Mitt campaign "incompetent".... you have to pay attention!
Once again the Republican strategy of hate, lies, fear and division........fails.
This 'story' omits Letterman's most telling comment in the segment. "Mitch Romney makes Dan Quayle look like Aristotle."
Letterman is a pathetic, arrogant, snarky and gapped tooth egomaniac. Figures Obama would relate to him and vice-versa.
How can anyone feel bad for this man. He's got more money than he'll ever need. He, nor the family will ever see a day when they are hungry, cold, wearing tattered clothes or living outside. One question needs to be answered: Why would he want the responsibility of the office? It makes no sense. This office ages people overnight. It may have perks, but what could this man want? Power has to be the answer, but even then his power is diluted by other branches of the government.
Romney and Ryan ........ Laurel and Hardy of the 21st century
Romneyhood .......... Give to the Rich take from the poor
First...what's up with "Mittens" I'm seeing all over the place – really? So lame.
Second... I don't care if Romney gaffes everyday until election day.... it still doesn't change the fact that Obama is the WORST president ever (maybe Carter, it's debatable). All you jokers who are so friggin' outraged over this clip, but willfully close your eyes to the reality of Obama's record and policies were going to vote for him anyway so who really cares how "outraged" you are.
Obama's the most over rated, arrogant, petty, ineffective president we've ever had... and he might win again...why? Because he has a devoted base of petty, arrogant people who care more about some stupid video clip than actually looking at analyzing and judging the current president based on his record and policies (and I mean with some honesty folks, just finding ways to talk yourself out of his failures doesn't count).
Well, I guess we know who I'll be voting for, maybe Mittens will win, maybe he won't, but we'll all live with the consequences and in 4 years if it's O in the white house, and Obama has misled us into further Foreign policy unrest, allies mistrusting us and enemies no longer fearing us, inflation and maybe even hyperinflation, and more bullsh*t spending that doesn't ever seem to do anything except lower our credit rating, then I'll be back to be amazed at how you all try to worm-tongue your way out of any responsibility for that as well.
Much love,
one of the 53% voting for Romney
Letterman is the pathetic one - sex pervert, marital cheater, extramarital cheater - right up the alley of Kennedy-type liberals. I don't care how much money this old curmudgeon has - he's a pitiful human being - no values, no class - just a big mouth.
Of course Letterman does not hate Romney. There is nothing to hate. The man is an empty, little fool.
I too feel "sorry" for Romney. Sorry he's so out of touch with the American people. Sorry he's used his positions and money to destoy companies and their workers. Sorry he has such antiquated, conservative opinions, and sorry he can't seem to figure out how to keep his mouth shut. One thing I'm not sorry about is he's the republican candidate – now Obama will win easily.
Mitt Romney on Mitt Romney: My campaign is about the 100%.
Psst ... Mitt. America is on to you. We really are.

anonymous believe it or not most of are not envious of ol mitt. Yes would be nice to have that much money, But who would want to be such a lying jerk. He is totally out of touch with the rest of the world. He doesnt care about the average person and if you havent figured that out yet you never will. Forward 2012
