#missing2min: The Romney tapes' two missing minutes

(CNN) – The secretly recorded tapes of Mitt Romney speaking at a fund-raiser in May were released first in clips on Monday, and later in their full form on Tuesday.

At least what appeared to be their full form: David Corn, the Washington bureau chief for Mother Jones, the magazine that first posted the tapes, says "one to two minutes" of the fund-raiser were never captured, according to the person who recorded it.

"The source says that recording inadvertently switched off in the middle of the fundraiser and that the source turned it back on as soon as s/he noticed this," Corn said Tuesday. "The source estimates that one to two minutes were missed, adding it might have been less time than that."

The video of Romney, which went viral and allowed Democrats to blast their rival as out of touch with struggling Americas, contained several nuggets from the GOP presidential nominee, including a remark that Americans dependent on government support were "victims," and comments casting doubt on the prospect for peace between Israelis and Palestinians.

The missing portion was not immediately apparent in the video posted on Mother Jones' website, since the full video was posted in two separate YouTube clips. The first ends with Romney discussing the "47% of the people who will vote for the president," and the second begins with Romney discussing trade with China.

Reaction online to the missing two minutes was both serious and irreverent.

Conservatives questioned why it was billed as the "full video" if a portion was missing. The Blaze, a website run by former Fox News host Glenn Beck, asked, "why did the video cut out at such a crucial part? Where is the missing video? And why is this being advertised as the 'uncut' footage?"

But on Twitter, reaction was lighter, with people filling in what they thought could be missing in the tapes.

CNN's Justin Lear contributed to this report.

I agree with everything Mr. Romney said. And to the Dems who think this is good payback for what he said about Carter – careful, karma can be a nasty thing and with all the crap you’ve dumped on GWB Jr….. Payback’s a B_____

For those of you that think two minutes don't matter: it took only fifteen seconds of missing footage to make Shirley Sherrod look like a blatant racist.

Someone tell the fat lady she's on in 5...

He shouldn't suffer the embarrassment of the debates. Just concede now so we can focus on the Congressional and State races and systematic elimination of pledge signing, out of touch dirtbags that have purposely stalled recovery for 2 years.

Unfit for the presidency is putting it mildly. Watch out for Rovebot commentators on all news sites too. There's no repairing this damage, even with an avalanche of special interest money.

Oh, how convenient that 1 to 2 minutes of the fund-raiser are missing/never captured. How many more minutes are MISSING that will show the full explanation Romney was giving at the fund-raiser????????

This is just one more gimmick to upset voters against Romney, one more dirty trick to make Romney look bad to voters. One more lie. And what are the odds that Jimmy Carter's grandson is involved?????

Yes, those minutes are important because they would inform you as to why Romney was addressing the issue of the 47% that don't pay Federal taxes and why that issue came up.

Are they really missing minutes or where they conveniently removed?????? Just another dirty trick from Democrats

Romney needs to start wearing a black tuxedo, a black top hat & a Caine with a silver tip. That would be just marvelous.

He is out of touch with a majority of Americans. Most citizens in that 47% Senior citizens collecting SS, Some are students who are exempt becasue they work at the school they are attending or make too little, some are the unemployed who have little to no income all thats left is part of the 1% that take $70,000 deductions for their horse and claim tax free deductions on foriegn investments. After you take out those hard working Americans you have a very small number who are in fact actually taking advantage of the system. check your facts people.

Myviewis – Romney needs no help at all making himself look bad. The only people he appeals to, are people who have difficulties distinguishing their backsides from a hole in the ground.

@Fair – "Shame on you, CNN. Only democrats are taken out of context. Clearly, there is nothing wrong with selective editing"
Nice try. If the camera shut down for a minute or two, that is not "selective editing". When tapes are deliberately cut up to make them seem worse than they really are (e.g. – ACORN, "You didn't build that", etc.), that is selective editing. Note the word S-E-L-E-C-T-I-V-E.

Romney is a hypocrate. He claims he pays all the taxes he is legally required to pay and no more. Then he turns around and denigrates those who pay all the taxes legally required, zero. Note that these people pay income taxes and then when they file their taxes they are refunded as a result of their earnings. If it is okay for Mitt to pay less than 14% when his maximum rate is 35% on what authority does he stand to criticise anyone who rightfully pays zero taxes in compliance with the law? Mit Romney thinks the law is right only when it works for he and his friends. Romney=NO CORE!

If what was shown is all that was gotten then yes, it's the entire video we've seen. You can't show video that wasn't caught on video, you know. If something significant were missing then the Romney camp would have said something about it already and they haven't.

  17. Typical Democrat Hack Job

How convenient that the whole quote is not provided so that the truth that Romney did say was taken out of context. Typical Liberal hack job gleefully distributed by willing pawns in a liberal media.

Romney has already owned his remarks. He's admitted to calling the 47% a bunch of lazy parasites. The missing two minutes will not change that.

those who are trying to discuss the 47% need to get their facts straight, the ones he talks about are people making an income, not students, not seniors and not your welfare losers,

The parts that were caught on tape are derogatory enough that it's probably better for mittens that two minutes of it are missing. That mittens has doubled and tripled down on his statements are proof of that.

Apparently Romney has not said that the tape was not his entire enlightening speech to his addoring $50,000 a plate "job creators" or even that his statements were taken out of context. He can't unsay what he said so the GOP is stuck with damage control. Unless of course, Romney comes out and says that that was not him in the tape or that he was forced to say what he said against his will. Be honest and tell the AMerican people what you have in store for thme if you win Mr. Romney. More power to the rich and the poor can shift for themselves. And by the way, where are those tax returns? You cannot run on the issue of economics and refuse to reveal your own finances.

The person recording it edited out the part where Romney says "everything I'm about to say is a joke to make me lsound like an idiot"

Except by the time the tape was "edited out" he'd already trashed the elderly, young people working parttime jobs to fund their educations, servicemembers in combat zones and the the working poor among others with his 47% comment.
