#missing2min: The Romney tapes' two missing minutes

(CNN) – The secretly recorded tapes of Mitt Romney speaking at a fund-raiser in May were released first in clips on Monday, and later in their full form on Tuesday.

At least what appeared to be their full form: David Corn, the Washington bureau chief for Mother Jones, the magazine that first posted the tapes, says "one to two minutes" of the fund-raiser were never captured, according to the person who recorded it.

- Check out the CNN Electoral Map and Calculator and game out your own strategy for November.

"The source says that recording inadvertently switched off in the middle of the fundraiser and that the source turned it back on as soon as s/he noticed this," Corn said Tuesday. "The source estimates that one to two minutes were missed, adding it might have been less time than that."

The video of Romney, which went viral and allowed Democrats to blast their rival as out of touch with struggling Americas, contained several nuggets from the GOP presidential nominee, including a remark that Americans dependent on government support were "victims," and comments casting doubt on the prospect for peace between Israelis and Palestinians.

The missing portion was not immediately apparent in the video posted on Mother Jones' website, since the full video was posted in two separate YouTube clips. The first ends with Romney discussing the "47% of the people who will vote for the president," and the second begins with Romney discussing trade with China.

Reaction online to the missing two minutes was both serious and irreverent.

Conservatives questioned why it was billed as the "full video" if a portion was missing. The Blaze, a website run by former Fox News host Glenn Beck, asked, "why did the video cut out at such a crucial part? Where is the missing video? And why is this being advertised as the 'uncut' footage?"

But on Twitter, reaction was lighter, with people filling in what they thought could be missing in the tapes.

CNN's Justin Lear contributed to this report.

@myviews – "those minutes are important because they would inform you as to why Romney was addressing the issue of the 47% that don't pay Federal taxes and why that issue came up. Are they really missing minutes or where they conveniently removed?????? Just another dirty trick from Democrats."
    1. We do know how it came up. Romney was responding to a question which is on the tape.
    2. Then you say we don't know if they were removed and immediately follow it up with the conclusion that it was a dirty trick. You know the old saying, "when you assume....."

..but I like the fact that you rightwingers are in full blown panic mode. Shows me that you believe this is as big a deal as we Obama supporters think it is.

I'm a father and middle class... I like what he said throughout the tape. I'm glad someone finally said it.

I'm middle class and an Obama voter, and what he said about me is disgusting. I'm highly offended that I pay nearly double the tax rate mittens does and that somehow makes me a government freeloader. That being said, I'm glad he said it too – it shows Americans exactly what mittens thinks of anyone who isn't wealthy.

If there was ANYTHING that could have turned this horrible situation around for Romney, he would have addressed it in the last 3 days and not waited until this point to try and throw doubt fodder to his blind followers (which he insults). Too little too late – sounds to me like a flailing attempt to rewrite the man's charachter.

Try Independent – These two parties are hopeless

Would have loved to hear what he said in those 1-2 minutes. What other gaffe coud he had said?
Pretty soon this man won't be able to walk because both his feet are in his mouth!

The conspiracy in this case is Romney is paid by the democrats to thow the election and is having difficulty not making it look obvious.

Typical righties claiming a Dem hack job. Their whole convention was built on an out of context quote hack job...

Those two minutes are probably Paul Ryan coming out of a shower ala Bobby Ewing, telling us "It was all a dream."

@Typical – You can go see the tape yourself. The whole thing is just as damning as the shorter version. Plus there's the great stuff about hispanics and Israel and Palestine. My favorite part is when he tells retired WWII vets and the entire population of very hard working poor that, "I'll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives." What an out-of-touch condescending fool Mitt Romney is. No one who look at 47% of the population with distain should be President of the United States.

Who cares about the missing two minutes from the video. What about the two missing tax returns previous to the one or two he has submitted?

  13. Mystery Solved

I have actually heard the missing 2 minutes.

Romney is prattling on and on about STRAWBERRY FIELDS for what almost seems like FOREVER. I even played the missing minutes backwards, and I'm telling you, Romney actually says: I BURIED PAUL.

One can safely assume that he is referring to Paul Ryan.

He's a real nowhere man, sitting in his nowhere land, making all his nowhere plans for NOBODY.

  14. Reality for you

No matter how you spin it... the economy is the pits, gas prices have doubled since Obama took office, coal mines are shutting down with over 1,000 people losing their jobs because of Obama's policies, our Ambassador to Libya was murdered due to Obama's inept national security policy....good grief! What will it take to wake you liberals up? Obama is a major threat to the survival of this country. He may (and may not) have good intentions but even giving him the benefit of the doubt remember, "the road to hell is paved with good intentions." ...remember Carter?

Switched it back on as soon as she/he found something to nail Romney on is more like it.

As much as Republicans want to bury your necks in the sand, Nothing is out of context in the video. Romney will say what ever he has to say to please whatever audience he is speaking to. All his rubbish regarding the 47 % was in response to a question from one of the donors. The donor asked Romney, and I paraphrase: how are you going to convince people to take care of themselves? And that secret recoding reveals what was his response! So for Romney to claim that the 47% wont take responsibility for themselves and want free housing, health care etc., and so he will disregard them, when in fact the 47% includes veterans and senior citizens who have already taken care of themselves and the rest of us, including Mitt and his boys is disgraceful and stupid. He knows he is wrong and realizes the stupidity of his remarks, but to admit it menas he is playing defense so he will rather plug along and wallow in the stupidity of his statements knowing very well that there are enough nuts to see wisdom in his crap . Mitt, what a piece of work!

I have it on good autority that Romney called hispanics "Taco Jockys" on the missing two minutes. Romney is a bigot running for President. Unless you are rich and white he is not for you.

Any GOPers/Teatrolls who want to wine about this can take a flying leap off Mittens' campaign's casket. He built it.

The two minutes does not really matter, Romney is right. There is no way I can vote for someone that believes it is fair to take more of the money I work really hard for, and give it to someone capable of working, but does not WANT to work. Redistribution from hard workers to lazy people, that is Obama's way, creating more democrat voters by making them dependent on the government. Romney is "obama lite." Even so, he will do much less damage to the country over the next 4 years , until we can get a decent president elected.

I'm sure all the campaign flunkies (but not the few remaining sane Republican citizens) would have us believe that in those missing two minutes Romney cracked himself up laughing and told his fellow fatcats "Golly, I was only kidding when I insulted old people, sick children, and the military – – as my wife Evita, er I mean Anne, has said "I Love You old people, sick children and the military!!!!!"

Wow, Incredible how the media manipulate everything and the 47% go with that. Believe me is not the first time that the media try to manipulate election and the end is never good.

Teatroll "logic": The rest of the tape clearly shows Mittens saying disgusting things about the middle-class and poor, but those two minutes that are missing somehow, magically make everything he said ok.

Right. And after the 752nd time you pull the slot machine lever, it means your chances of winning on the 753rd pull are all the greater? WRONG!

Given the sherr number of gaffes and stupid statements are contained in the existing video (the 47% foolishness; the policy on Israel and Palestine- simply "too hard" to do; economic policy-"the economy will simply improve because I am elected"; the I "wish I were Hispanic" remarks; "let's bomb Chicago with a dirty bomb"), maybe its a good thing two minutes are there- who knows what revelation they might have held!

It doesn't matter what was missing in the tape, because what we heard was PLENTY and the whole world knows what job Willard is really qualified for now. That is the job of "a country club president" and NOT the "country" and we plan to give him the freedom to do just that. In November he will be free to choose from ANY country club he wants and GO TO WORK immediately.

It is the full video of what was taped. Not taping part of it and cutting it later are two different things. Romney may be luck those two minutes were missing, I doubt anything positive was said in that time.
