#missing2min: The Romney tapes' two missing minutes

(CNN) – The secretly recorded tapes of Mitt Romney speaking at a fund-raiser in May were released first in clips on Monday, and later in their full form on Tuesday.

At least what appeared to be their full form: David Corn, the Washington bureau chief for Mother Jones, the magazine that first posted the tapes, says "one to two minutes" of the fund-raiser were never captured, according to the person who recorded it.

– Check out the CNN Electoral Map and Calculator and game out your own strategy for November.

"The source says that recording inadvertently switched off in the middle of the fundraiser and that the source turned it back on as soon as s/he noticed this," Corn said Tuesday. "The source estimates that one to two minutes were missed, adding it might have been less time than that."

The video of Romney, which went viral and allowed Democrats to blast their rival as out of touch with struggling Americas, contained several nuggets from the GOP presidential nominee, including a remark that Americans dependent on government support were "victims," and comments casting doubt on the prospect for peace between Israelis and Palestinians.

The missing portion was not immediately apparent in the video posted on Mother Jones' website, since the full video was posted in two separate YouTube clips. The first ends with Romney discussing the "47% of the people who will vote for the president," and the second begins with Romney discussing trade with China.

Reaction online to the missing two minutes was both serious and irreverent.

Conservatives questioned why it was billed as the "full video" if a portion was missing. The Blaze, a website run by former Fox News host Glenn Beck, asked, "why did the video cut out at such a crucial part? Where is the missing video? And why is this being advertised as the 'uncut' footage?"

But on Twitter, reaction was lighter, with people filling in what they thought could be missing in the tapes.

CNN's Justin Lear contributed to this report.

Good question on the legality. Given though that only wealthy Republicans were there in a private home, willing to cough up 50k for the pleasure, it would appear one of the donors is the source. Either that or the butler did it!

Malory Archer - it shows Americans exactly what mittens thinks of anyone who isn't wealthy.
    ======================================================================
Way to twist and distort what he said. It had nothing to do with people who aren't wealthy. He said his message of lower taxes would not appeal to nearly 47% of the American people who pay no federal income taxes.

Not only do the lefties not know how to read and listen, they project their feelings for Romney's feelings.

If people that do not pay federal income taxes are sooooo upset and insulted, then why don't they join the dwindling ranks of people that actually pay federal incomes taxes in this country?! PAY YOUR FAIR SHARE to run an defend this country! Help support your veterans! Ask not what your country can do for YOU!!!

I'm curious.... Was this taping legal in the state in which it was done??? Did this person break any laws?

@FedUp: You can't nail someone who doesn't make the ignorant remark in the first place. It isn't like they set him up to say that 47% of Americans are hopeless freeloaders who think of themselves as victims.

In the Democratic Media (96% of the media) always attacking Rebulicans as Old, Stupid, disconnect with reality, out of touch with working class, not spoke elocuently, not are intelligent etc, then all the press mount in colera because Rommey said 47% not paid taxes and do not said anything about the 45% that you are ofended every day on every articule, this is the most HYPOCRYT PRESS that I see in all my life.

Oh and 47% of the population will not be voting for you now Romney creep.

I'll concede that Mr. Romney obvioisly didn't plan on being recorded, and as such maybe didn't police his comments very well. But, in this day and age every politician must assume what they say to one pers, 150 (as in this case), or 10,000 will ultmately become part of some public record. Look at the statistics here. We have 58 minutes of Mr. Romney unplugged with a whole host of idiocy presented on politics, TV, the 47%, foreign affairs and more. what is missing is just 2%. If the total video was like 5 minutes and two were missing I'd be concerned. I think Biden had it right: this one speaks for itself.

Unless Romney says "I don't mean what I'm saying, this is a joke", the missing 1-2 minutes don't mean anything.
They can "re-tool" his campaign, but they can't re-tool his heart.
Romney "nailed" himself, and this isn't the first time, but it is now pretty obvious why he won't be "specific".
He would scare everybody, and he knows it.

The missing 2 minutes probably says the inbred redneck trailer trash will vote for me because they are still fighting the Civil War. The citizens not born in this country will vote for me because they are used to white rule and can't think for themselves.

One to two minutes of this tape were not recorded. So?????? I think we heard enough to know how he feels about the "you people" unwashed masses, his polygamist Mexican family and his views on Iran, Israel and the middle east which are orate much kick the ball dons the field and wait to see what happens. He is not going to take psrt in the game because he is too chicken to make any real decision.
That tiny, little, minuscule amount of time is not going to make a difference of what he actually ended up saying. Even If he hadn't doubled down agouti his BIG GAFFE it still wouldn't matter.

i have an idea maybe the two minutes that are missing are even more harsh than the other comments in the video and they are waiting until the week before the election to post it.

You know, the questions on context, editing or recording really are mute. Mr. Romney stood by the 47% comment several times already since, in fact making even more strident statements. I haven't heard his positions about the other statements he made in the tape though. So much of it was so strange I'd have to bet he'll walk back some of them.

Missing 2 minutes, accident or purposeful! Wait until 5 week before the election, definitly was no accident. The bottom line is that the economy is bad, we lost over 5millions jobs, Obama states we gained over 4million in 5 years, but leaves out the number of under paid jobs asre included, as well as part time jobs, and the 1 million not looking for a job. Yet he sent stimulus money barrowed from China, back to China to pay for the solor panels built in China. While here in the USA, money to solor panel companies go bankrupt and their employee are depended now on the government.

Reality for you: No matter how you spin it... the economy is the pits, gas prices have doubled since Obama took office, coal mines are shutting down with over 1,000 people losing their jobs because of Obama's policies, our Ambassador to Libya was murdered due to Obama's inept national security policy....good grief! What will it take to wake you liberals up? Obama is a major threat to the survival of this country. He may (and may not) have good intentions but even giving him the benefit of the doubt remember, "the road to hell is paved with good intentions." ...remember Carter?
    _______________

Now matter how you spin it... the economy was the pits, gas prices had MORE than doubled since Clinton left office, coal mines like Sago were impoloding under Bush's lax safety enforcement policies, there were seven attacks on U.S. embassies and consulates during the Bush years and many, many people murdered due to Bush's inept national security policy, and the attack on the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City on 9/11 under Bush's inept watch and the loss of thousands of Americans on American soil. Good grief!!! What will it take to wake you conservatives up? Republicans are a major threat to the survival of this country. Conservatives like Bush and Romney may (and probably do not) have good intentions, but even giving them the benefit of the doubt, remember: "the road to hell is paved with good intentions." ...remember Bush's second term? How would you like a third term of Bush policies under Romney?

-----------------------------------------------------First, let me remind you that Romney is not Reagan, Obama is not Carter and this is not 1980. Now, yeah, we remember Carter and so will you conservative Republicans from here on out. It is Jimmy Carter's grandson, James Carter IV – a Democratic opposition researcher, who exposed the video for all the world to see, in what is probably one of the longest over-due, most deserved ase of political payback in American history, Hahahahahaha!!!

Yeah, actually it did. You had to twist and distort to not come to that conclusion. Rmoney made it clear that he considered the 47% to be poor, dependent on the government, and unwilling to take responsibility (i.e., lazy). Apparently neither you nor Rmoney realize that most of the 47% do pay payroll taxes, sales taxes, state income taxes, and property taxes. And a lot of the 47% live in Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and Texas - all RED states.

Funny how conservatives are whining that the entire video was not posted. Why were they not as equally outraged when they only posted a snippet of Obama's "you didn't build that" comment, while missing the part where the President went on to say that all small businesses have help from their community, their workers, customers/clients, etc?

Let's considering this facts. The Republicans want to talk about moral and personal responsibility but the 47% that he is talking about are mostly in Republican states. Also the 47% should not demonize my mum is part of the 47% and she worked her ass off. She had 3 jobs and she probably would still be working if someone had cleaned up a spill or put a wet sign up on the floor; she slipped and ruptured 2 disc. Getting social security and disability was a nightmare for her and she had to go through more indignities. Don't talk to me about the 47% being lazy and wanting a hand out a great deal of them did their jobs and built this country they are old and sick it happens. 47% also include military so he does not speak for them right. I thought a key principle of the Republican party was the military it seems to me roles have changed lately because the Democrats seem to care more. He does not think before he speaks. The fact of the matter is that if they are talking about moral and fiscal responsibilities those who are not following that model are the red states. Highest pregancies Texas, red state. Also I remember seeing a clip where Romney' mum said that when they came to this country they were helped by government assistance.Man you have really forgotten your past. Someone helped you, made this country with hard work and fought for you but they are not your people and they dont count. That is really interesting. Finally what about the poor, do people honestly think that poor people enjoy being poor. Here is a thought continue to make changes to government assistance refocus it like Clinton. Do not make welfare generations by saying the more chlldren to have the more money, readjust the formula so it only takes care of the chidren and not able bodied grown ups, cut down on welfare fraud the ability to sell ones food stamps, and put a time limit on benefits. As far as social securities the medical eligibility for social security is too board. If you are a drug addict you can collect social security it is a disease I am fine with that but rehab should be attached to it along with a time limit, they have conditions suchas asthma as something you can collect social security for but it does not tell you to what degree your asthma must be, conditions should be defined. Also when you get off of welfare because of the time limit you will you will have to pay a precentage back no one eats for free. These ideas maybe unattainable but at least I am making a suggestion their not they are just saying listen they are not for me forget them. This country is only as good as the sum of it's parts.

Romney spoke the truth. People aren't used to presidential candidates who deal in reality. Romney will help people get off of welfare. Obama will add more people to the welfare rolls. It's that simple.
