#missing2min: The Romney tapes' two missing minutes

(CNN) – The secretly recorded tapes of Mitt Romney speaking at a fund-raiser in May were released first in clips on Monday, and later in their full form on Tuesday.

At least what appeared to be their full form: David Corn, the Washington bureau chief for Mother Jones, the magazine that first posted the tapes, says "one to two minutes" of the fund-raiser were never captured, according to the person who recorded it.

- Check out the CNN Electoral Map and Calculator and game out your own strategy for November.

"The source says that recording inadvertently switched off in the middle of the fundraiser and that the source turned it back on as soon as s/he noticed this," Corn said Tuesday. "The source estimates that one to two minutes were missed, adding it might have been less time than that."

The video of Romney, which went viral and allowed Democrats to blast their rival as out of touch with struggling Americas, contained several nuggets from the GOP presidential nominee, including a remark that Americans dependent on government support were "victims," and comments casting doubt on the prospect for peace between Israelis and Palestinians.

The missing portion was not immediately apparent in the video posted on Mother Jones' website, since the full video was posted in two separate YouTube clips. The first ends with Romney discussing the "47% of the people who will vote for the president," and the second begins with Romney discussing trade with China.

Reaction online to the missing two minutes was both serious and irreverent.

Conservatives questioned why it was billed as the "full video" if a portion was missing. The Blaze, a website run by former Fox News host Glenn Beck, asked, "why did the video cut out at such a crucial part? Where is the missing video? And why is this being advertised as the 'uncut' footage?"

But on Twitter, reaction was lighter, with people filling in what they thought could be missing in the tapes.

CNN's Justin Lear contributed to this report.

You are arguing that 2 minutes are missing doesn't mean anything; however, you take 2 minutes out of a speech at it defines EVERYTHING? really? You people are laughable.

To those who try to characterize President Obama as weak "Jimmy Carter," first let me say that was a deliberate mischaracterization of a good man. Second, let me remind you that Romney is NOT Reagan, Obama is NOT Carter and this is NOT 1980. Third, the release of this video by James E. Carter, IV is one of the greatest cases of poetic justice in American political history. And, finally, just as liberals found it was of no avail to point out that Breitbart and O'Keefe had heavily edited the ACORN video (after the entire video was subpeonaed by the courts), you conservatives are about to find out that whining about that two minutes that were videoed will do you no good. What Romney said is what he said and is in line with the real belief of the conservative Republican elites.

If people that do not pay federal income taxes are sooooo upset and insulted, then why don't they join the dwindling ranks of people that actually pay federal incomes taxes in this country?! PAY YOUR FAIR SHARE to run an defend this country! Help support your veterans! Ask not what your country can do for YOU!!!
You sound like a fool as this fits your candidate in a nutshell. Why don't you pass this little piece of advice on to Willard's campaign and see how he responds. Remember, "Obama" cannot be considered an answer.

If corporations (aka Job Creators per Frank Luntz) didn't send so many jobs overseas to profit off cheap labor over the years, we wouldn't have so many people unemployed, underemployed or on food stamps. They'd be working at jobs. Corporations cut pay & benefits so people need help to keep up with costs. Food costs more because of droughts caused by corporations spewing filth into the air, water & soil. People who worked all their lives & paid into SS/Medicare were promised this social contract by... US – aka our elected officials. They paid their way. Children who benefit from programs (like school lunches, HeadStart, college grants) become contributing tax paying members of society. It seems the only people who want out of our social contract today are the greedy b*sta*ds who caused all our problem in the first place. Supply side economics only work for the already wealthy for a short period of time. Supply + demand = jobs = prosperity for all Americans.

All I can say is that if someone had illegally recorded video and sound of an event in my privat eresidence, I would be calling the police to investigated and arrest the people responsible for violating my privacy and that of my invited guests.

It appears the usual lawless leftists in the Democrat Party think they can break whatever laws they want to accomplish their ends. There has to be a stop put this this lawless behavior.

Shades of Watergate! Maybe the ghost of Richard Nixon came back and "accidently" erased them... or maybe Romney was speaking about something that the unnamed source did NOT want recorded. Hmm...

So true. The missing 2 minutes are probably the part where Mitt confessed that his own father was once on welfare.

So... would that missing two minutes mean he really did not say the things he just said? Do you think in the missing two minutes he told the audience he had his fingers crossed the whole time? And... really, we are laughable WITH you... no, seriously, with you...

As an independent I won't choose sides as to what Romney meant to say, or didn't mean to say. However, it does paint a bad picture to those like Glen Beck, Rush Limbaugh as well as the many conservatives who posted on this very site that Obama was leading a campaign of "Class Warfare". Now that the shoe is on the other foot and Romney is seperating the "Haves" from the "Have Nots", I wonder what the feelings are about Romney are from those that accused a liberal President of doing this very thing???

The 2 minutes probably didn't matter, if it had, Romney would have mention it when he was made aware of the tape.

Pres Carter's grandson must have swallowed..the 2min...Two of a feather....The airing of these tapes will prove to be in favor of Gov Romney..."Why" because there must be a debate why are so many Americans not earing enough income to be able to pay taxes...Sure the Pres Obama takes credit of creating 4.5milliion job but fails to tell that most are low-paying jobs....and the claim of 4.5million is questionable....Government does not create this many jobs...private sector does...The business people are not with Obama....

I am not sure if people are getting it. He is not just talking about welfare in the 47% he is talking about non-taxable income which includes Social Security. Can someone explain to me what Romney's plan is to get people off of welfare because he just said he did not care about them so if you dont care about them why would you help them unless you take them off welfare and create a homeless problem and have people swatting in the streets. What is the plan exactly a lot of rhetoric and cowing down to peope who have money who dont need social security, public assistance and that huge tax break that to me is the equivilant of them not having taxable income. Romney give me a plan and please make it more coherit then your Palestinian/Jewish state policy.

    truth hurts

Malory Archer – it shows Americans exactly what mittens thinks of anyone who isn't wealthy.
Way to twist and distort what he said. It had nothing to do with people who aren't wealthy. He said his message of lower taxes would not appeal to nearly 47% of the American people who pay no federal income taxes.

Not only do the lefties not know how to read and listen, they project their feelings for Romney's feelings.

If people that do not pay federal income taxes are sooooo upset and insulted, then why don't they join the dwindling ranks of people that actually pay federal incomes taxes in this country?! Another wingnut with reading comprehension skills. That, or so drunk on the rethug koolaid that they are unable to LISTEN to mittens own words. He stated UNEQUIVICALLY THAT THE 47% OF AMERICANS WHO ARE OBAMA SUPPORTERS ARE LIVING ON THE GOVERNMENT DOLE WAITING FOR HANDOUTS! Considering my tax rate is nearly what mittens ALLEGES he paid, it appears HE'S more on the government dole than me.

    truth hurts-
I think you are jumping the gun on who the recorder was- I seriously doubt the Democrats would PAY $50,000 for a chance to record Romney (who makes plenty of gaffes in public already). Admit it- it was probably one of the donors. I'd be really p****d if I paid 50k for a dinner and got that drivel for entertainment. It was probaly someone who felt they didn't get enough of the candidates' attention.
As to the legality of the recording-all of these folks were invited and paid to be there- there weren't any strangers. What's to investigate?

So the video shows no stops or starts like a Brietbart right-winger hack job and some how it's just like a Breitbart hack job?
Typical right wing theory of nonsensical truthiness.
Mitts is a buffoon, and more video would only be more proof of him being an arrogant rich guy who knows only how to be an arrogant rich guy.

If we belive the problem is people not making enough money (and I am not sure that's the whole problem), the the GOP needs to explain why they are against raising the Federal minimum wage (and in fact want to do away with it altogether); why they stand againt equal pay laws, why they support (so-called) right-to-work laws, and why they oppose things like unions that benefit the working class.
Face it. The GOP is against the middle class and the poor, and only for the rich. Mr. Romney's little chat proves it.
If Mr. Romney and the GOP really belived that getting more money into people's hands would benefit and build the middle class, they would support a higher minimum wage with COLA, they would support equal pay for women, shoot they might even convince their rich "job creators" to pay liveable wages, and maybe even benefits like retirement and health care. Think of the problems THAT would fix.
