Paul Ryan says Romney comments ‘obviously inarticulate'

Greensboro, North Carolina (CNN) – Republican vice presidential candidate Rep. Paul Ryan said Mitt Romney’s leaked comments were “obviously inarticulate” in an interview Tuesday, but stood by the point that people have become too dependent on government under President Barack Obama.

“He was obviously inarticulate in making this point, and the point we’re trying to make here is under the Obama economy, government dependency is up and economic stagnation is up, and what we’re trying to achieve is getting people off of government dependency and back to a job that pays well and gets them onto a path of prosperity,” Ryan said in the interview with KRNV in Reno, Nevada.

He echoed that sentiment at two public events Tuesday, though Ryan did not comment directly on Romney’s remarks - recorded at a private fundraiser in May - that were leaked on Monday.

Romney acknowledged his comments were “not elegantly stated,” though he has also stood by the general thrust of his remarks.

Reporter Joe Hart asked Ryan if his running mate regrets what he said.

“Oh I think he would have said it differently, that’s for sure, but the point still stands,” Ryan said. “We have too many people becoming too dependent upon government because of the poor economic policies of the Obama administration.”

    "SuperD

What is truly sickening here is the double standard. Romney makes an accurate factual description of the majority of the Democrat base. Yes, the slackers, takers, and lazy butts all 47% of them. The Liberals scream FOUL!!!"

So you're calling vets, the elderly, and the working poor slackers?
    Shame on you.

Obama wants to redistribute the money earned by those "who didn't built that" to those who really didn't build that.

Government dependency is up 23% under Obama, 23%!! That is the wrong direction. When even Sweden is realizing the welfare state is unsustainable (been there, done that) and this idiot in the White House doesn't America's future isn't a bright one under Obama.

Also, Obama hasn't only failed on the economic front, Obama is an utter failure on foreign policy. Look around people, over 30 countries are protesting America all over the globe. We are more hated now under Obama than ever before.

So Willard thinks 47% of us are freeloaders and want to be dependent on the govt? And he's upset they won't vote for him. Well what about that 65% of white males that won't vote for President Obama? I don't hear the POTUS whining like a little grade school girl. Many people that benefit from President Obama's policies still will not vote for him, no matter what.

But thanks for finally being truthful Willard.

    OBAMA 2012!

Wow. So their come-back/counter to Mittens own, candid words is that the would-be President is "obviously inarticulate." Is that the best you can do? They really believe that all Americans are stupid.

The point is, if you say enough stupid things, you are stupid. I think we've heard enough to judge the Romney/Ryan ticket. Inept, inexperienced, unfeeling.

Tony - Retired and elderly make up 1/5 of the 47% who don't pay income tax
    ===========================================================
I doubt it. Maybe those that didn't plan very well for their retirement and are living exclusively off of social security, which it was never meant for. Otherwise, people pay taxes if they are on social security and still have income or distributions over certain amounts.

Might want to check out the IRS web site!

Sorry Democrats but when you put on your show at the DNC and one of your primetime speakers, a 30 year-old woman, uses that speech to beg for the country to pay for her birth-control you're going to have to take the scorn of being called the party of the takers.

You chose to portray people as victims that need dependency so don't take it out on Romney just because he's the adult in the room pointing it out to you.

The Democratic Party under Obama has become the Dependency Party, call it the new D-Party.

Because they could care less about the Obama goodies being offered them when they believe Obama's policies will bankrupt the country in the long run. They are thinking long term and about their kids future, not what they can get out of their government today and next week.

Tell me Mr. Wonderful, where are the jobs you speak about??? Should our government ignore starving people because they cannot find work? You are lucky enough Mr. Ryan to have a job for which are paid handsomely and receive wonderful health benefits which are paid for by ME. How are you going to create new jobs for everyone, tell me this. Is it a secret until after election day?? Show your patriotism and let us in on your little secret NOW about jobs for everyone before people go out and hang themselves because they are cut off from the "entitlements" you and your pal Romney say we are getting. If you and your pal have the answers, please tell us NOW not later.

You are both out of touch with the common man and will NEVER work for us, only you and your rich friends will prosper. By the way, you mom is on SS isn't she?? Is she one of the 47% Romney was speaking about who pay no taxes huh???

sheryl – The 30 year old woman did not beg for the country to pay for her birth control. You have been lied to by Fox foreign owned republican media. Unlike you, there are women who actually rely on government programs for breast exams, and women's health.

    ----------------------
There has been a growth imbalance in income levels between the those at the top and those at the bottom. The middle class has seen their incomes stagnate, and their total net taxes of all kinds they have paid increase. Meanwhile, the wealthy have seen their taxes dramatically reduced and their net incomes dramatically increase.

I am disgusted by politicians in this country who try to divide our nation to exploit it for their own advantage.

This is a subtle appeal to racism as I am sure the 47% includes everyone who is not white. BTW. Believe me, most rich white people see a black person or an Hispanic and assume they are on welfare. I hang out with a lot of these rich white people, so I know what I am talking about. They don't know black people or Hispanics , or even a poor person, so they just rely on the stereotyping they hear from folks like Romney, Ryan, and Gingrich.

Most rich, white people don't realize most people on public assistance are white. They also are mostly children, disabled, or elderly.

I am anxious to hear the Romney Ryan plan for putting these people to work - when they take a break from exploiting and stigmatizing them.

If taken in the context of this being a fundraiser meeting, it is clear what
the true gist of his message was. He was saying that he's not going to win the
47% of people who are committed to voting democrat. He then listed reasons his
views don't resonate with that audience. Opponents prefer to focus on his
literal words that 47% of Americans believe each of those things, but that
wasn't his point. He was identifying his focus group and acknowleging that some had
already decided to vote democrat. For the same reason, Obama doesn't campaign in
Texas, despite it having 25 million people. He knows he won"t win Texas, so he
doesn't worry about campaigning there. It's just a fiscal reality. Romney didn't
delineate how many of the 47% fell into each mindset or category because he
wasn't talking to an audience where that was necessary. He was talking about
campaign strategy with his team. Being exact wasn't necessary. They understood
his meaning. The audience that's now seen the video – the audience it wasn't
geared to, is splitting between people who understand this but are still
choosing to play it up for all it can get them, and people who honestly don't
understand, having only caught snippets of the video, and relying on pundits for
the interpretation. The same arguments can be made for Obama comments "I'll have more flexibility after the election"(Putin), and "They cling to their guns and religion"(2008 Primary fundraiser). It would probably behoove Mr. Romney to clarify that he didn't mean to imply that all 47% who support Obama have a "victim" mentality, but that he only meant to list the kinds of people his message would not sway, and inadvertantly lumped them together. It wouldn't hurt to clarify his intent and apologize for categorizing them all into one stereotypical group.

Under Obama the Democratic Party has become the Dependency Party, that's just a fact.

Government dependency has gone up 23% (that's huge) under Obama. It's a pathetic record and Obama w/Obamacare that dependency is going to rise.

America Obama sees you as victims especially women. When I was 18 I paid for my own birth control. Yet Obama put on a 30 year old woman to beg the country to pay for her birth control. It's pathetic.

Romney is right, he will never reach a person who sees herself as a victim and needs government dependency...even when she can afford it herself.

Romney was right, but made a mistake in his verbage. What he should have said is that unfettered capitalism and reward comensurate to effort will help the 47% MORE. Compared to entitlements taken from earners and redistributed, un-restricted free enterprise is their only hope of improving their situation. Entitlements place a ceiling on what one can achieve, because they're limited, by definition. Furthermore, the source of the money for entitlements, even if the programs are administered flawlessly and fairly, the business that produce, will suffer. Everyone loses. Romney should actually COURT the vote of the 47% on those grounds, not just turn his back.

I've invested over $250,000 into Social Security over the past 4 decades – if that makes me dependent on gov't then so be it. By the same token, Romney is dependent on Hedge funds, Bain capital, and Wall street mongers...
