Romney tax return: Why release now?

(CNN) – At first glance, Mitt Romney's decision to release his tax return on a Friday afternoon seemed to be a way to bury a story that has dogged the Republican presidential candidate for much of this year.

But was this a case of the "Friday news dump" that's become commonplace in the nation's capital?

Maybe, but maybe not.

While it's true, a story released on a Friday afternoon or early evening tends to get less attention thanks to the approaching weekend, in this case the attention may be welcomed.

It's already been a rough week for the Romney campaign, thanks to those "47%" secretly recorded videos of Romney at a fundraiser when he cast supporters of President Barack Obama as dependent on government. The release of those clips on Monday has dominated coverage of the race for White House the entire week.

The Romney campaign's release of the long awaited 2011 tax returns may be an attempt to change the conversation.

Romney pays extra taxes to keep his word, and break it too

The campaign calendar may also be forcing Romney's hand. Releasing the tax returns next week would take away from what the Romney campaign hopes is a ramping up on the campaign trail, centered around a three-day swing through the battleground state of Ohio. And the next week the debates begin. Releasing tax returns just prior to or during the three presidential and one vice presidential debate would only accentuate the tax return story.

The Romney campaign says there was no strategy involved in the release. Romney spokesman Kevin Madden said the returns were released "because they were ready."

I think the Donkeys will spin this in numerous roads to help Obama win re-election because at the end of the day most of the people identify with Obama that they too are lazy at work and if you can get away with not working then good for you and they praise that kind of behavior.

He's only releasing a summary of the last 10 years. I think it just reinforces the secrecy. I don't see how this will help him.

All ou Dem conspiracy theorists can now get back to focus on the real issues of the election – the economy, unemployment & leadership. And for all of those who are going switch from "i bet he didnt pay taxes" to "he ought to pay more" – get a good accountant. If you dont like the tax system blame the IRS – they write & enforse the tax code. Also check the reporting on whats happening at the WH & O's schedule for today – it's another day of now work & jetsetting.

He just wants to distract from the other issues, even though we wanted to see the taxes. Though not enough...he was trying to dodge the bullet of the questions he just doesn't want to answer. Especially because it made him look bad...lol

Do you have any idea how magnanimous I am for telling you that what you just said is not helping your case or Mittens?

Why release them? Because he said he would release 2011 and he did – that’s a stupid question. Slow news day I guess. I like that fact you seem to ignore that he went back to 1998 and his average tax rate as 20% over that time period. He also dispelled the lie that he did not pay taxes in any given year from the likes of senile dirty Harry Reid.

Now there is a shock! A Romney campaign with no strategy?! This man is going down the toilet and carrying his whole party with him.

Everything is secret about Romney ... his tax returns, his offshore tax havens, his record at Bain, his bailout for the SLC Olympics, his video tape from fundraising events, his underwear, his dismail performance as governor of MA, his tax cut plans, his spending cut plans ... ... and his secret fear of the ladies on the View. If he can't handle the View, he's not capable of being the leader of the free world.

Don't be a sucker America, Romney still needs to show us at least 10 years of true tax return. This is just a side show. If we don't demand respect from people like Romney, rich highfalutin folks like Romney will keep giving us what he thinks we deserves. We must always hold people like him to the same exact standards, otherwise we will always be taken for granted. This mean, both parties must unite and hold our leaders and would be leaders accountable. Americans first and foremost.

OK, whining lefties that will never vote for a Republican no matter who it is are whining about everything from timing, to the tax rate, to the charitable deductions, to the all the other made up theories about whatever.

It just begs the question, WHO CARES?!!! The guy paid nearly TWO MILLION in federal taxes ALONE in ONE YEAR. More than a 1,000 of you losers pay combined in a lifetime!

Romney and the people that pay these amounts are keeping this country afloat. Not you whining, loser tax free riders. You should be sending him thank you cards every year instead of insulting him. It is because of people like him that you can be the free loaders you are.

Why not release them now? Until he does, he has no credibility on the matter, in fact his track record clearly indicates that he lies about taxes in every campaign he has been involved in.

Why release 2011 return now? Because he just filed it. The date of the preparer's signature is 9/17/2012.

Why release them now? Because something even more damaging must be brewing and he's hoping to deflect from it by releasing his 2011 tax return.

Sweetie, bottom line is that you identify with Obama's lack of work and you admire it, why else would you want this guy running our country when our country is falling apart and is facing bankruptcy, thousands of people have no jobs, no hope of it getting better, the middle east is chaos ( today they burned Obama's coffin), our Ambassador is dead plus 3 others and the White House knew it was coming. I appreciate your constant insults, mocking and high horse you have put yourself on, and you think you are so smart but our country needs help, we are falling apart and Obama can't do the job. Sorry Snifit but it's hard for me to see this chaos and I feel nervous of our future.

Jim Acosta and Paul Steinhauser are so smart.. what a subtle question! why release them now? to give you something to write about so you can get your paycheck. You clearly avoid to write about the truth on Libyan attacks, right? Be thankful you got the 'news of the day'.

How about releasing the other 10 years of tax returns? What is Romney hiding?...off shore tax shelters on the Cayman Islands?

He had already promised to release his 2011 so this is nothing new. We want to see previous years so we will know for sure if he paid taxes. Hell 14% is nothing compared to the taxes that an average American pays. If you're lucky enough to get a bonus, you will pay anywhere from 28% to 33% on that money. I'm sorry but Romney is a liar and a cheat.
