Romney tax return: Why release now?

(CNN) – At first glance, Mitt Romney's decision to release his tax return on a Friday afternoon seemed to be a way to bury a story that has dogged the Republican presidential candidate for much of this year.

But was this a case of the "Friday news dump" that's become commonplace in the nation's capital?

Maybe, but maybe not.

While it's true, a story released on a Friday afternoon or early evening tends to get less attention thanks to the approaching weekend, in this case the attention may be welcomed.

It's already been a rough week for the Romney campaign, thanks to those "47%" secretly recorded videos of Romney at a fundraiser when he cast supporters of President Barack Obama as dependent on government. The release of those clips on Monday has dominated coverage of the race for White House the entire week.

The Romney campaign's release of the long awaited 2011 tax returns may be an attempt to change the conversation.

Romney pays extra taxes to keep his word, and break it too

The campaign calendar may also be forcing Romney's hand. Releasing the tax returns next week would take away from what the Romney campaign hopes is a ramping up on the campaign trail, centered around a three-day swing through the battleground state of Ohio. And the next week the debates begin. Releasing tax returns just prior to or during the three presidential and one vice presidential debate would only accentuate the tax return story.

The Romney campaign says there was no strategy involved in the release. Romney spokesman Kevin Madden said the returns were released "because they were ready."

There are reasons why Jesus said this about the rich...

"Yes, I tell you again, it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for someone rich to enter the kingdom of Heaven" (Matthew 19:24).

Anyone else think it is scary that Romney is getting more and more W facial features each day? I did not know you could be possessed by someone who is still alive.

Why is CNN posting a headline indicating that Romney has released the proper amount of tax returns?!?!
    HE HAS NOT!
A notarized statement from an account does not count as releasing your tax returns.
A notarized letter from an accountant IS NOT A TAX RETURN
A TAX RETURN IS A TAX RETURN

As middle-class we work hard to raise our kids. Doing everything we can, which includes paying for their education. But the rapid rise of the tuition and fee is becoming an unbearable burden. Furthermore, the tuition and fee can’t be fully exempt from income tax. I would like to advocate that tuition and fee pay for the education shall be ALL excluded from income tax. These kids are future tax payer. Tax now is not only short-sighted, but also a double taxation to middle-class. Let’s cast our vote to the candidate that can help us middle-class. If he can get this into his agenda, let’s vote for him…..

uh...because he said he would release it when it was done? guess the dems would try to turn anything against romney to try to distract for the last 1 1/2 week of lies from the messiah BO's admin on the attack on the embassy

Uhh... releasing 2011 only is not nearly what's required. We need to see the past ten year's worth. All of them.

I'd like to see Obama at the wheel when we hit the iceberg. You'll still be arguing about what kind of endangered woods the lifeboat is made out of when we sink.

"Taking out the Trash". Typical news cycle tactic. Put this out right before the weekend so no one pays attention.

This is an attempt to divert attention away from the 47% on the Sunday talk shows. Unfortunately the 47% feels even more alienated by a man that they find out has made 12 million dollars in just one year. Nothing wrong with raking in the dough, but speeches about poverty coming from the condescending heights of wealth don't really go down well without a tall glass of water. Let us not forget that not only did he disparage this group, he also said twice that he is not interested in trying to win over this group. He has already written off the estimated 10% of gay Americans, so that makes 57% of the population that he doesn't care one iota about. Now matter how he tries to spin the damage the following day, we know for certain that gay Americans don't show up on his Mormon radar. He personally gave money to Mormon organizations who ended up raising over 4 million dollars to deny marriage to gay Americans in California. Seems that as a Mormon he should know a thing or two about blatant discrimination.

This does nothing for me. He still underpays his taxes, and he still hides money offshore. NEXT!

Why not now, CNN? It doesn't matter when he release them, the liberal spin doctors at CNN will be all over the story .. . oh, yeah, they already are.

"The Romney campaign says there was no strategy involved in the release"

They lie about every little thing. It's psychotic. This isn't even something they need to lie about. Of course it's strategic. You're in the middle of a presidential campaign and this has been an issue for months. We all know it's strategic so you just cheapen yourself and everyone else by saying dumb things like that.

Can anyone really question that the only truly candid moment of the Romney campaign is the videotape of him speaking to $50,000 a plate dinner? It's the only time he's actually sounded like he's just saying what he believes.

Yeah us dems will spin it......but with truth not like the Republicans do with lies.....he has to do something to get the monkey off his back, try to calm the storm he created......but releasing only summaries of this past tax returns makes it seem as if he is still holding out something......if your not hiding anything and your tax returns are done correctly then why not show them in there full form.......this is not going to erase what we heard him say in the video......we haven't forgotten that he doesn't care about the 47%.....he's not going to win back those that he just tossed off the cliff.......OBAMA 2012

"I think the Donkeys will spin this in numerous roads to help Obama win re-election because at the end of the day most of the people identify with Obama that they too are lazy at work and if you can get away with not working then good for you and they praise that kind of behavior."

Do you have any idea how magnanimous I am for telling you that what you just said is not helping your case or Mittens?

I believe the Romney campaign when they say there no strategy involved in releasing the taxes today because no one with an ounce of knowledge of campaign strategy would be stupid enough to have waited until the last month and a half (after getting beat up on this issue for months) to now introduce the issue of their taxes into the campaign.

Amazing, these guys. Peggy Noonan is right, sheer incompetence.

I am not a Romney fan, but this Tax return thing is stupid, It pretends to be important, but it isn't.

Why would he take his time? Perhaps just so he and his supporters can look at it and get ready to answer questions about it?
Lets face it, He doesn't use the simple form to fill out taxes, he has someone else do it for him. Now if he is to release it he will be questioned about it, don't you think he should be informed about answering the details of his taxes without rereviewing them?

I would love to hear someone in the mainstream media ask Romney whether or not he took advantage of the 2009 tax amnesty program for people with previously undisclosed income from Swiss bank accounts. Is that the reason he wont even go ONE more year back?

Yes, you paid only 14% last year–how about ten years of taxes. This will not divert what you said in "Closed Doors". I paid 38%. He paid 14%. Folks, now you understand. He knows thoroughly, so he released last years. Crafty idiot.

Really? Warren Buffet is too lazy to work? Bill Gates? The list of patriotic millionaires who support President Obama (google their website)? How about Sister Simone Campbell (Nuns on the Bus)?

And what about the other 47% folks that Mittens said were mooches, like veterans, Seniors, the disabled, anyone receiving Social Security or a federal pension (like retired Secret Service or CIA agents)?

Myviewis, you really should do yourself a favor and stop posting the latest GOP/Fox talking points because it makes you look so foolish ...
