Romney makes Clinton joke–in front of Clinton

(CNN) - Mitt Romney cracked wise about former President Bill Clinton Tuesday, seconds after the 42nd president introduced the Republican nominee at the Clinton Global Initiative in New York City.

"Thank you, Mr. President. I appreciate the kind words and your invitation here today. If there's one thing we've learned this election season, it's that a few words from Bill Clinton can do any man a lot of good," Romney said, drawing laughs.

His quip likely refers to a couple Clinton comments during this campaign year. On CNN's "Piers Morgan Tonight" in May, Clinton referred to Romney as having had a "sterling business career," a comment capitalized on by the Republican's campaign.

More often his words have been used to boost the current president. Clinton, a top surrogate for Obama, gave a widely-praised speech at the Democratic National Convention earlier this month, spending 48 minutes making the case for a second term for President Barack Obama.

In fact, more viewers of the DNC considered Clinton to be the highlight of the weeklong event, rather than Obama, according to a recent Pew Research Center poll. Some political analysts credited the president's mild post-convention bounce in the polls to Clinton's rousing speech.

Romney, however, poked fun at the Clinton factor while kicking off his foreign policy speech Tuesday.

"After that introduction, I guess all I have to do is wait a day or two for the bounce," Romney said, drawing laughs.

duane – "love the guy like he was running soul train.."? As I recall, that show had a black host and lot of black dancers. What are you trying to say? That's a rhetorical question. You'll probably have to have someone with a dictionary look that up for you.

@Wake uo People! I agree with you except I think Hillary would probably struggle too. How many white men would actually take orders from a woman President? I am so glad that Colorado is such a diverse state. Most of us do not see blue, red, color, or women. We see the person. Something that a lot of people in this Country should try. That is why Colorado is a swing state.By the way, I am a middle class white woman retiree who paid taxes for 38 yrs, but as Romney calls it, I am a victim.

Romney will say anything, I mean anything to win. I think people see through this, including many republicans, and that is why he will lose the election.

Besides issues with trust, he has still yet to convinve many that he truly cares about the issues affecting middle class anericans. If you dont believe me, check his proposed policies.

Romney gave an amazing speech! It was filled will strong, innovative, and inspiring ideas! You all are even more amazing! He spoke of 'work' and how uplifting it is! That's what his policies are! Isn't that what this country needs most of right now anyway? Not a visit to the View!!

I agree with your first comment....if you were talking about Obama. You can convince yourself of the second comment, but it is those(his) policies which will truly help this country. He will be the next president.

I know why Romney won't release his tax returns. He was hiding money at UBS and his name was given to the IRS. He doesn't want everyone to see the fines and amounts he hid. If not for the amnesty program, he would be a federal criminal! Do the research... UBS 2009 scandal

The comments here show the IQ of most. To vote for the entertainer in chief 4 for more years is a disaster for this country. You are either on the dole or really do not fact check comments from a a news station that has their head so far up obamas butt they cannot see the truth. You will put your childrens lives in a lifestyle of nothingness. /they will be the ones paying all the debt from the lazy asses that rather sit in front of their government supplied big screen tv's while texting on their government supplied cell phones, buying junk food from food stamps that us working people pay for. I have talked to a few people that say the only reason they are voting to put obama back in is to keep their freebies. Obama loves the masses that want freebies after he gets your vote, your toast in the next few years.

Romney proposes work and creating real jobs versus Obama that wants to spend billions more tax payer dollars to shore up the economy. Where are those first bilions as no work was done and no jobs created and the tax payers took it in the shorts. Romney equals real solutions versus Obama printing more worthless money that gets sent to his buddies pockets.

I guess Romney has to do lot of explanation in next 45 days. His economic policy, his plans, HealthCare reforms (which now he says he will many things from Obamacare), his foreign policy is oriented more on Israel existence and attack Syria.

If he can put these things more clear, rather than making jokes and create funny moments for crowd he would have a chance to win.

Mitt Romney should examine his own use of government money. Notice he doesn't mention how much government money was pumped into the Salt Lake City Olympics. Without that money, he wouldn't have been able to turn anything around. We should have just let those Olympics fail, we're still paying the price.

How I wish those were the two in the race. I would vote for Clinton in a heartbeat. His wife too! But seriously, Obama??? Democrats should have punted him during the primaries. Now I have no choice but to vote Romney. Thanks Democrats.

American policy since the beginning has been to support the existence of Israel. Mitt Romney did not make this up. In fact it is supposed to be Obama's policy as well. But attack Syria? Mitt Romney has never said this. Sure he would have taken a more aggressive stance earlier before this got out of control, but that may have just been material support and not actually a 'boots-on-the-ground attack.

If Romney thinks so highly of "work" perhaps he should try it sometime - he's been living off his investments for the last decade or so, and paying half the tax rate on his investment income than many of us pay on our incomes earned through the apparently exotic (to Mitt Romney) yet admirable practice of "work." Perhaps if Mr. Romney and his family had more experience with "work" that tax rate disparity would change, or even disappear.

As for The View, you couldn't pay me enough to get me to sit on a couch with those women. Give me a bunch of boring UN speeches any day of the week! I would rather pay inheritance taxes than appear on The View. President Obama has my fullest sympathies, and Mitt Romney too if he ever goes there. Ew.

Oh, that's a big laugh. No the biggest laugh is when a businessman tries to create foreign policy based on Faux'd News polls and sweet iced tea leaves. No candidate should even be commenting on foreign policy decisions as they are being made. TRULY BAD FORM, SCHMITT. Let your buddy Netanyahoo dictate the US's foreign policy...yeah that's the ticket.

"Borderless" is a Romney supporter pretending to represent a type of voter that does not exist. I wouldn't be surprised if Borderless is a Romney staffer trying (hopelessly) to nudge Clinton fans over to Romney. No one who prefers Bill or Hillary's policies over those of the current nominees could rationally conclude that the next best option is Romney, rather than Obama.

@Four – it's amazing you know what Mitt would do...even Mitt doesn't know what he'd do. He will SAY attack and not attack, depending on the audience at the moment. We have NO control on Syria... boots on the ground translates to more flags on the casket. AND, President Obama supports Israel, stop with the crap. He go and do everything Israel tells him to do, which is apparently what you want. Think you're hastening the rapture or something? Armageddon, maybe.

@ Bill – saying you will create 12 million jobs out of tax cuts and increased military spending is NO kind of plan. It's not even wishful thinking. It's just wishful.

The last time I looked, Romney was talking about wanting to repeal Capital Gains tax for people that make under $250K per year. Do you know what that does for middle income family when they sell a house or retire? That is HUGE for them. To say Romney is not going to help the middle class pure Tom Foolery. Besides..go talk to some people that actually HAVE money, developers, builders, construction users...the people that DO things to supply middle class construction trades jobs...they are ALL sitting on piles of cash waiting...and if Romney wins....the cash will start flowing into projects...if Obama wins...they'll hunker down for 4 more years...good luck with that, either way.

  25. The REAL Truth...

@MIDave – As we've witnessed first hand "Leading from behind" has been a train wreck:
    – It matters not that the POTUS has had to drive the cart out of the economic quagmire that Dubya's disastrous 8 yrs caused, with the Repugs trying to pull the cart back into the swamp.
    – It matters not that the Grand Obstructionist Party has done NOTHING but block, filibuster, whine and add anti-abortion and defense spending increase riders to EVERY bill in Congress including budgets, then euphorically complaining of no budgets – like 4 yr olds.
    – It matters not that the Debt Rating downgrade had nothing to do with the POTUS – that was all the Repugs refusal to compromise – to make Obama look bad.
    – It matters not that the POTUS has no control over the the price of gas – even Fox News has stated that.
    – It matters not the timing of the release of the movie that inflamed the middle east, causing the death of our Ambassador.
    – It matters not that the lemming drones believe what foreign-owned Faux Noise channel spouts.
    – It matters not since the right will vote for anyone other than Obama, even the complete losers they are offering.
