'Hypocrisy' is ripe: New Obama web video, Romney pushback

(CNN) – President Barack Obama's campaign is calling GOP nominee Mitt Romney a hypocrite when it comes to China in a new web video released Wednesday. And the Romney campaign is pushing back with their own charges of hypocrisy.

The narrator in the video says while the Republican candidate talks tough on China for "stealing American ideas and technology" on the campaign stump, in the past Romney did not hesitate to make money off Chinese companies.

"Romney invested in China's version of YouTube–a haven for stealing American videos," says the narrator in the 30-second video. "Romney's even invested in a Chinese electronics company being sued by Microsoft for pirating its software."

The video concludes: "If Romney really wanted China to stop stealing why would he send them his money?"

Romney, in turn, has attacked the president for failing to take a tougher stance on the country for questionable trade practices labeling China as a "currency manipulator" and promising to hit the country's exports to the United States with tariffs.

The Obama administration filed a trade complaint on September 17 with the World Trade Organization against China claiming the country has illegally subsidized automotive exports and undercut American suppliers.

The Romney campaign said the timing of the administration's filing the case proves campaign season political motivations calling the complaint "too little, too late."

"Mitt Romney will not take hypocritical attacks from a President who promised to take China to the mat for its unfair trade practices and wound up being China's doormat, at the expense of American workers," said Romney campaign spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg in response to the web video. "President Obama has refused to call China a currency manipulator, while the actions he touts have failed, expired, or been described as mere 'peanuts' by trade analysts. Only one candidate in this race will end China's cheating on trade and that's Mitt Romney."

Both candidates are campaigning in the crucial battleground state of Ohio Wednesday. A CNN Poll of Polls, an average of four Ohio polls of likely voters conducted over the last two weeks, shows Obama with an advantage over Romney 51%-44% among likely voters in the state.

    Tykl –

Your entire post shows a complete lack of understanding as to how the government works. First, the president is not able to "change law".

Second, Obama NEVER had a so-called "Dem house and senate". This may come as a shock to you, but having 50 seats and 1 "maybe" in the Senate doesn't mean you can get anything through. You need 60 votes for cloture, without which you can't end debate on a bill and bring a vote to pass (or not pass) the bill. This is where the Republican obstructionism comes in. The Republicans have engaged in more filibusters than any congress in the history of the nation in an attempt to make sure that nothing gets done. People that actually know how the Senate works know this. People that don't know . . . well, they parrot the lies they heard from Rush Limbaugh.

And finally, just to clue you in since you seem to be a bit detached from the mainstream, most Americans don't have any investments of note. A huge percentage of Americans can't afford to invest because, thanks to people like Romney, their jobs have been outsourced to places like China, India, etc.

    To summarize:

    A. Obama can't "change tax laws".
    B. There was never a "Dem house and senate", you need at least 60 guaranteed votes for cloture to pass anything through the Senate.
    C. Most Americans don't have investments Most Americans don't have anything of note in savings. Most Americans weren't born with a silver spoon in their mouths like Romney.

In response to tykl: Perhaps you should repeat your 7th grade civics class. You repeatedly say that the President has the power to change tax law. We have 3 branches of government – hint – the Executive Branch does not write laws.

Now we know why Romney likes Snooki over Honey Boo Boo. It reminds him of his own company, Cnooc which he lovingly called Cnooki.

Dear Conservatives, Let me explain why investing in the Chinese companies is hypocritical. By investing in these companies Romney is encouraging them to steal from the United States. Reading your posts you are all okay with that. As a Liberal I am not okay with China stealing from the U.S.

Mr. Romney invested in China, while it was starting to emerge as an economic power. However, China has regulated its currency or manipulated its currency so that it has a competive edge against United States trading firms. The value of the Chinese currency has not increased with the normal market rate. Mr. Romney would like to make a profit off of his Chinese investments, and therefore wants China to stop regulating its currency so that the value of the Chinese currency will rise. Once again Mr. Romney promotes his own selfish interests above the American interests. For Mr. Romney to advocate a stronger Chinese currency is to say that the United States Dollar should not be the pre-eminant standard of exchange. The US Dollar has been the global standard since World War II. Because of this fact, US companies are provided primary access in foreign markets. US companies are granted quicker access through trading ports like the Panama Canal and the Persian Gulf. These are the benefits of having the pre-eminent monetary exchange, but Mr. Romney wants us to throw all of it away so he can reap a few extra million dollars that will not be taxed.

Yeah yeah, we know... According to the party fanatics commenting here and everywhere else, one guy is perfect, immaculate and incapable of wrongdoing, the other is a crook, liar, cheat, incompetent...etc... Yet these party fanboys show they are all blind to the evidence, incapable of discussion, offensive, no personal opinion and a very closed mind. And most probably they will not see ANY benefits whatsoever, regardless who gets elected... this is getting boring.

OUCH!!!!! This one is going to sting for a while.

Romney is the first major party candidate to express his faith in America by moving his money out of the country. I find mr. romneys brand of patriotism to be a little hard to stomach.

And why didn't Obama get this done against China on his 1st, 2nd, 3rd year of his administration??? Why did Obama wait to get something done now that his in an election year????? Because Romney brought it up and Obama as always does everything in the name of Marketing gimmick.........

Obviously Obama filed the trade complaint now because he realizes he had failed to do so and the complaint was needed, so Romney is correct and Obama ran to do what Romney said.

"The Obama administration filed a trade complaint on September 17 with the World Trade Organization against China claiming the country has illegally subsidized automotive exports and undercut American suppliers.

    *************************
He's filed more complaints with the WTO than the Bush administration did in 8 years. Maybe you should talk to Romney and ask him how he could make money off of exporting jobs to China and pocketing the proceeds. You are such a worthlass hack.

There are two positions and two objectives. As a businessman, you justify what you do for profits. Romney did that by joining the massive move off shore by the entire nation. He went with the flow for profits and did it well. As a public servant, you do what is best for America. President Obama did not do that. The president should move to balance TOTAL US TRADE, and not just what we do with China. This is the "fix" so badly needed for our nation and by not fixing it we are no faced with economic and fiscal destruction.

    ---------------------------------–

diplomacy & concern for the Middle Class = Obama = unemployment

Bain Capital = Romney = 1000s of people employed – job creator

Simple answer, unless you enjoy being on unemployment benefits.
