And so this happened... in 1968

(CNN) - While a missionary with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in France, now-GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney had this photo taken for his then-girlfriend, who is now his wife, Ann.

The photo was first published in CNN's sister publication Time Magazine this week.

I don't understand the relevance of this 40 something year old picture, except I'm wondering who took the picture and
from where. It appears to be aimed pretty much straight down on the heart. Other than that, so what?

It is a shame that a wimp like Romney would be touted as a guy who would make America strong militarilly. First off the man was busy frolicking around France when his peers were fighting in the Mekong delta. I do not know of many poor children who would be allowed to go on a missionary journey in a developed country when there was draft for able-bodied youngmen. I thought missionary journeys were meant to bring the heathens of Africa, South America and Asia to Christ, now that would sound very genuine for a missionary journey.
Secondly, this man has five sons and none of them joined the military like Jon Huntsman's sons and Beau Biden. What an effontary to the poor people of this nation for a priviledged wimp like Mitt Romney to engage in saber rattling and fanning the embers of war. Americans think very hard before you cast your ballots in November.
    Secondly

While others were out DYING and being INJURED he was writing love notes to Ann. This is one of the MANY reasons he'll never be POTUS. Shameful and disgraceful are the words for this.

Yeah this is what Romney was doing in France when the rest of the REAL MEN and WOMEN were fighting and dying in VietNam.......Romney was dodging the draft...

Conveniently you forgot Bill Clinton was excused from Vietnam also, the Senator Clinton worked for made the arrangements.

Apparently no photos were taken while he and his buds were bullying vulnerable classmates in prep school.

I agree with PJ re "relevance" – be ye pro or con Romney, Democratic or Republican or Independent- WHO CARES about a 1968 picture of this sort? Really? I know a lot more now than I did in 1968 even if I I thought I knew EVERYTHING THEN. I DO know for a fact that I would HATE to have some of my 1968 photos on the internet (however, I was in better shape then!!!)

Also to AFRICANUS – I'm not Mormon but you obviously know less than I know about MORMON missionary trips – they go everywhere – not just poor countries.

Oh this is just too good. While you liberals are dumping on Romney, you might take a moment to remember that your hero Bill Clinton avoided the draft repeatedly while "frolicking around" at Oxford. Only one year later, while his peers you remember so fondly were giving their lives, Bill was organizing anti-war demonstrations in London! Your hypocrisy and selective criticism is running very deep here. Shame on you.

Romney lying on the beach in France doesn't change the fact that he wants the working class to pay more so millionaires and billionaires can get more tax breaks (like 13% isn't low enough), he wants to get rid of medicare for a coupon, he'll repeal affordable health care and replace it with the emergency room, and he wants to beef up the military so he can send OUR kids (not his) to war with Iran. No thanks.

Hands off my medicare! Hands off my Obamacare!

You people make me sick. Horrible comments about anything that has to do with Romney. Even horrible comments today about Ann Romney and her plane inncident. Scary when people treat other people as if they are subhuman just because you dont agree with their view points. I bet you there are others you supported in previous elections that ditched out on Vietnam. All Dems are allowed to make mistakes but if its a Republican, they deserve to be demeaned endlessly. Disgusting. Now I wait for the Democrat supporters to talk down to me.

Ummmm.. Bill Clinton was a draft dodger! How quickly we forget. Clinton just ran off to Canada, at least Romney was serving his Church.

What he should have been doing is what many did and many died doing. Go to Vietnam instead of being the chicken s**t he truly is. This should have been a rice paddy!!

Dodging the draft just like Cheyney, Limbaugh, and the rest of the war mongers who love to go to war they just don't want to fight it. Romney has been a spoiled rich brat his entire life, so while he was writing love letter on the beach in France(deferment in pocket) 50,000 US Soliders died in the swamps of Vietnam. Romney is a coward a liar and a man with no core who does not know who he is.

"Conveniently you forgot Bill Clinton was excused from Vietnam also"

Conveniently you forgot that Bill Clinton is not running for POTUS this year AND that he was never a warmongering fear-merchant like Mittens and the rest of the GOP. So on the one hand, your retort is irrelevant....and on the other, it's an inept comparison..
