Denver (CNN) - As Mitt Romney headed into the crunch period of debate preparation with a heavy weight of expectations on his shoulders, he told a sprawling Denver audience that the Wednesday night match-up against President Barack Obama wasn't about a scoring a win.
"People want to know who's going to win - who's going to score the punches and who's going to make the biggest difference in the arguments they make," Romney said. "You know, in my view, it's not so much winning and losing or even the people themselves - the president and myself - it's about something bigger than that."

Instead, Romney said, the trio of presidential debates offered an opportunity for each candidate to present his own pathway for America.
"And the American people are going to have to make the choice as to what kind of America they want," he told the cheering audience of several thousand packed into a cavernous air and space museum. "I'm delighted that we're going to have three debates. It'll be conversation with the American people that will span almost an entire month."
Earlier in the day, a Romney adviser sought to downplay expectations for the first debate after Romney surrogate and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie predicted Romney would turn the race "upside down" at the Wednesday-night face-off.
"I don't think any one event is going to dramatically alter the race," Kevin Madden told reporters on Romney's campaign charter.
On Monday evening in Denver, Romney offered a possible preview of his attack lines against the president on foreign policy.
"For the last four years, we've had a foreign policy led by a president who believes the strength of his personality is going to get people to do the right things," Romney said. "Well, we've seen fires burning in U.S. embassies around the world. We need the strength of American military, America's economy and America's principles if we're going to keep this world more safe and preserve liberty."
Romney also criticized Obama for the congressionally-mandated military cuts that are scheduled to kick in at the beginning of 2013.
"His budget calls for hundreds of millions of dollars in military cuts, and then on top of that was this sequestration deal that puts even more cuts on top of that," Romney said. "That will mean thousands of jobs lost here. It will mean millions of jobs ultimately lost across our great nation."
The sequester or fiscal cliff was a bipartisan act of congress.
There was a time, not so long ago, when Americans were tough independent individuals … but with success we have grown very soft … now, we are a nation of dependents …
But we are still a stubborn people, too stubborn to acknowledge the coming storm, we ignore it, turn away …
On our present course, the nation will fiscally fail, go bankrupt, by 2024 (see CBO report) … but that damn storm is ugly … I can understand why you don’t want look at it …
Wow. Romney criticizing Obama for doing the very thing all republicans have demanded all along – to cut government spending and reduce the roles of government workers. Do they really think they can have it both ways? Make demands about reduced spending, and then complain when it happens?
Apparently yes – because just prior to doing that, he also has the gall to talk about foreign policy issues, issues which, if he is to be believed, would only get WORSE under his mismanagement. I should stop being amazed at how foolish politicians appear – and this isn't reserved for any one party – they all seem to be parodies of dumb TV sitcoms these days. The sad part is just how unfunny they can be.
Its sad , if it was the other way around , Romney would do what he did to Newt too Obama.
Obviously Mr Romney never took debate while getting his law degree. All debates are about winning and losing. If you have strong convincing arguments for your side and our facts- you will win. If you faulter, lie and stumble thourgh answers- you will lose.
For an election, perception may come into play and then lies can win for you, but ionly for that night once the fact checkers get out there and do their thing.
Ha... even Mittens knows he's going to fail.
Romney is still going down the path of attacking everything Obama has done while providing no specifics on what he will do if elected. I've seen what Obama has done in the last 4 years – I don't need Mitt to tell me what to think about it. I'll draw my own conclusions, thank you. What Mitt needs to do is offer specifics on his plans for the next 4 years. I'll then draw my own conclusions on him. Failing to provide specifics isn't an option if he wants my vote.
romney has been rehearsing since the last election. Hope he remembers his zingers. This clown can't run his own campaign how can he run our country. wing states have stopped early registration for repos because of voter fraud. Boy oh boy they sure know how to screw themselves. Check it out Forward.
That's good Romney feels that way because he doesn't stand a chance of sounding intelligent on any issue standing next to President Obama who is a leader and works on the real issues every day. Romney seems to be the only one who doesn't know he has already lost the election. The fact his donors are disappearing hasn't registered with him yet. Go President Obama. The People you have worked so hard to help – ALL of us – are with you and will be voting for you despite Republican voter suppression laws, purge lists, and GOP robo-calls telling people the wrong dates for voting.
Mitt, since you are not the president and I hope for the world sake you never make it. bump you, with all your lies and your bull crap. You are nothing but a phony that has another check list on his agenda. People that know you and have followed you know that you are nothing but a Liar that will say just about anything to get to the white house. u have no plan, you are not a patriot, and money will not buy you the white house.
""wasn't about scoring a win" ?? Then pray tell me, how do you expect to win, without telling people what your plans are ? Isn't this "scoring" a Win ?? If a quarterback doesn't huddle with his players, and doesn't tell the players what's going on, or what he going to do, what do you think will happen ? Hello ? What's the quarterback to do then ? Just throw the ball to whomever – and hope somebody on Your Team receives it ? Hello ?
Mitt, believe me, I'm so tired of the republican noise down here, it's pathetic. It's starting to get deafening. I actually cannot wait til not only the debates are over, but the election. Mitt, to be perfectly honest, I'm not a huge obama fan, but I simply cannot vote for You, although this is a republican state. I mean, everywhere you look, or go, you hear all the obama haters out there. I don't hate either one of you guys. I just think this country will be better off with what we already have, I also think you would put a burden on people that makes less than 100K per household.
Vote Democrat – 2012 ( for the "working" middle class)
Cheering audience packed into the cavernous air and space museum? Sounds like the Romney campaign is alive and well, contrary to what some would have us believe. Go Romney, wake up the sleeping people who think the state of the economy, deficit, unemployment and debt are acceptable.
Mitt the twit still backpeddling. He's not qualified to be President.
That's funny twit because most talking heads think that this debate tomorrow will make or break you. It seems that you are going to go the AK mutant way with zingers.
We want answers. We want the truth about your taxes in the last 10 years. We want to know why you have flip flopped on every issues you were ever for or against. By your own non working wive's admission she worries about your mental health. You are looking disheveled and haggard. You have no character and your ethics took a dive months ago.
.........lies, untrust-worthiness, stashing money in CAYMAN ISLANDS, making 47% middle class American statements are about to win???? Idiot.
