How #ladyparts went viral

(CNN) - It started as an ecard, became a post on a Obama campaign blog, and eventually became fodder for conservative websites.

It wasn't the average get-out-the-vote banner.

Tune to CNN for Wednesday's presidential debate coverage starting at 7 p.m. ET on CNN TV, CNN.com and via CNN's apps for iPhone, iPad and Android. Web users can become video editors with a new clip-and-share feature that allows them to share favorite debate moments on Facebook and Twitter.

"Vote like your lady parts depend on it," the meme read.

The post appears to have been posted first to the blogging site Tumblr by someone known on the site as Vennstiel on September 25.

When posting it last Tuesday, that user added, "Because they kinda do."

Someone with the Obama campaign "reblogged" it on their official campaign Tumblr this week, adding the commentary, "Really, though," plus a link to the women's health page on Obama's campaign website.

The post has since been removed from the Obama campaign Tumblr, but the page was first saved by web sites that "cache" or save the impressions from web sites over time. Google's caching service provided a snapshot of the page showing it online just before 4 p.m. ET on Monday afternoon.

A spokesman with the Obama campaign did not return a request from CNN for comment on the post.

It was done in the style of the ecards on the website Someecards, whose website shows it was posted there by a user of the site known as WiscoWoman on May 27.

The Obama campaign post brought the meme to prominence online. On Tuesday afternoon, the original Tumblr post had over 8,700 "notes" which includes other users posting the graphic to their Tumblr pages.

Conservative websites, including The Drudge Report and The Weekly Standard noted the post, and it drew a flurry of comments on Twitter.

Obama's campaign website lists Tumblr alongside other popular social networking websites, including Twitter and Facebook, where supporters can interact with the campaign online.

A separate Tuesday afternoon post mentioned women in a different context, noting the platform differences between Obama and Romney on Planned Parenthood and reproductive health care.

Tumblr says it has 75.8 million blogs and that nearly 63 million posts are added daily.

As the Tumblr user who posted the original meme noted on a separate Tuesday afternoon post, "It's got a life of its own now."

    if a woman is pregnant then she already made her "choice", actually several of them. she choose to have sex. she choose to not use contraceptives. she choose to be irresponsible. i think the 3 strike rule applies. now the baby gets to choose life.

    Just because something is legal, does not make it right. Look at Obamacare, it is legal, but it is not right, or even the best way to do the job.

    "Far too many are using abortion as postconception birth control"

    Would you prefer they used it before conception? NOBODY doesn't want to reduce the number of or need for abortions. NOBODY. Here's a hint: Making them illegal doesn't accomplish either of those things.

    To Jucilee, when a women is pregnant, it is more than just the mothers "BODY PARTS!" There is now more than just the mother there, there is another HUMAN BEING in the picture at that point. AND, if the government wont stand up for those pore defenseless children, WHO WILL?? Not their murdering mothers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh, but you already know that deep down inside, no matter how much you gnash your teeth and cry that your "Offended"!!!!!

    "Curiosity
    I really enjoy this "war on women" the democrats and media have concocted. The democrats decided that poor people need the ability to kill their children to save money, and they want all of us to pay for it. "

    except no one is asking you to pay for it, at all, so that was a silly argument wasnt it? What the repubs want to do is remove anyone from having any choice. They want to ban abortion, they want to get rid of planned parenthood etc etc. Tell me how that isnt a war on women?

    "Why is it illegal to harm the nest full of eagle's eggs, but perfectly fine to kill a human being?"

    because a lot of eagles are an endangered species.

    Great Quote

    "So let me get this straight. This is a long sentence.

    We are going to be gifted with a health care plan that we are forced to purchase, and fined if we don't, which reportedly covers 10 million more people without adding a single new doctor, but provides for 16,000 new IRS agents, written by a committee whose chairman doesn't understand it, passed by Congress, that didn't read it, but exempted themselves from it, and signed by a president who smokes, with funding administered by a treasury chief who didn't pay his taxes, for which we will be taxed for four years before any benefits take effect, by a government which has bankrupted Social Security and Medicare, all to be overseen by a surgeon general who is obese and financed by a country that is broke.

    So what the blank could possibly go wrong?"

    "far too many are using abortion as post contraception birth control"

    1st off, is there anything illegal about that? Whether or not you agree with the practice is irrelevant. 2nd, what business is it of yours? This is a medical matter. The govt should not be involved.

    Wilson, unfortunately the law is not exactly about what is right. Some people don't think the death penalty is right. But it is legal in some states.

    Here is an analogy for y'all
    A chicken and a rooster get together, and so the chickens eggs that she lays will be fertilized.
    If the eggs are taken and set on the counter in a kitchen, do they become chickens?
    If someone cooks the eggs for breakfast and eats them, are they considered chicken killers?

    maybe we can just compromise and agree that all liberals can just be sterilized to prevent unwanted babies and the potential for another liberal walking the planet?

    just saying wrote, " if a woman is pregnant then she already made her "choice", actually several of them. she choose to have sex. she choose to not use contraceptives. she choose to be irresponsible."

    Unless, of course, she was raped.

    Unless, of course, the birth control failed.

    Unless, of course, she was not given the opportunity to learn about birth control.

    Ok... so it's provided "for free" from the insurance companies. How will they pay it? Government doesn't have any more of our money to give them. They will most certainly need to increase premiums to do so. Therefore, I will have to pay for it. All life is precious, why would someone want to kill a baby? Planned Parenthood does a lot of good things, but killing babies isn't one of them. I would fully support PP if it didn't kill babies.

    "because a lot of eagles are an endangered species."
    So you're saying that an eagle's life is more important than your baby's?

  14. Irony spotter

    Am I the only one who sees the irony in the fact that, years ago, feminists argued that women should be valued for more than their ability to procreate – ie, more than their "lady parts." And now, this campaign has reduced women being only about that. Worse, they apparently believe that most women are too stupid to reproduce responsibly – so the government has to take care of it for them.

    Abortions per 1,000 women:
    ================= Britain: 17.0
    =============== Canada: 15.2
    ============== Denmark: 14.3
    ============ Japan: 12.3
    ======== Germany: 7.8
    ===================== United States: 20.8

    The US is by far the most “religious” of those countries. The difference is the other countries have universal healthcare. Women have far less of a concern over being able to raise kids in those other countries.

    I hate to be the one to break the news to you but liberals and conservatives are ALL Americans. Each have the same rights and share the same privileges. "A house divided against itself cannot stand" said Lincoln (paraphrasing from the Bible). America is on it's way out because Americans can't get along.

    in which case an exception can be made. she would of course have to file a police report otherwise i'm sure all women wanting abortions will claim they were raped.

    Unless, of course, the birth control failed.
    ==============================
    always that chance since nothing is 100%. still gonna give the baby benefit of the doubt and let them live.

    Unless, of course, she was not given the opportunity to learn about birth control.
    ==========================================================
    because we all know there is simply no way to find out about it if you wanted to. some grade schools are handing it out. pretty lame comeback. and again, the baby gets the benefit of the doubt. why should they die due to the mothers ignorance?

    Please cite example of Mitt Romney wanting to take abortion away fr women? If the issue is economy, as some of you have said b/c Mitt isn't going there with everything else why does abortion matter.
    Dems have lied over and over that Repubs want put black people in chains, take away abortion, take away right to vote, when none of that is true. Just the typical fear-mongering, race baiting rhetoric for a party that has no clue on how to fix the economy and is whose polices have hurt the poor more.

    I'm sorry but all this back and forth is meaningless. At the end of the day neither liberals, nor conservatives, will over turn Roe v Wade. It's really that simple. The only reason the conservative party is even humoring the notion is because there's a large population that will blindly follow anyone saying that life begins at conception and abortion is murder (don't believe me, look at Mitt's political posturing over the past decade in regard to this very topic). Guess what, if life begins at conception then a miscarage would be homicide. Additionally, to the racists in the audience, you really shouldn't hate on Planned Parent hood, look up how they were founded (here's a spoiler, minority population control). This whole back and forth political banter is nonsense. Abortion, right or wrong, isn't going anywhere and tax payers should be happy about that, imagine the burden it would put on our economy to take care of all these unwanted pregnancies (yes we would have to grow the government to address that issue, how does that sit with the god fearing fiscal conservatives?)

    Given the number of children growing up in poverty, I'm not sure why the right is so focused on bringing more children into the world. The focus should be on the children already on this planet.
