How #ladyparts went viral

(CNN) - It started as an ecard, became a post on a Obama campaign blog, and eventually became fodder for conservative websites.

It wasn't the average get-out-the-vote banner.

Tune to CNN for Wednesday's presidential debate coverage starting at 7 p.m. ET on CNN TV, CNN.com and via CNN's apps for iPhone, iPad and Android. Web users can become video editors with a new clip-and-share feature that allows them to share favorite debate moments on Facebook and Twitter.

– Follow the Ticker on Twitter: @PoliticalTicker

– Check out the CNN Electoral Map and Calculator and game out your own strategy for November.

"Vote like your lady parts depend on it," the meme read.

The post appears to have been posted first to the blogging site Tumblr by someone known on the site as Vennstiel on September 25.

When posting it last Tuesday, that user added, "Because they kinda do."

Someone with the Obama campaign "reblogged" it on their official campaign Tumblr this week, adding the commentary, "Really, though," plus a link to the women's health page on Obama's campaign website.

The post has since been removed from the Obama campaign Tumblr, but the page was first saved by web sites that "cache" or save the impressions from web sites over time. Google's caching service provided a snapshot of the page showing it online just before 4 p.m. ET on Monday afternoon.

A spokesman with the Obama campaign did not return a request from CNN for comment on the post.

It was done in the style of the ecards on the website Someecards, whose website shows it was posted there by a user of the site known as WiscoWoman on May 27.

The Obama campaign post brought the meme to prominence online. On Tuesday afternoon, the original Tumblr post had over 8,700 "notes" which includes other users posting the graphic to their Tumblr pages.

Conservative websites, including The Drudge Report and The Weekly Standard noted the post, and it drew a flurry of comments on Twitter.

Obama's campaign website lists Tumblr alongside other popular social networking websites, including Twitter and Facebook, where supporters can interact with the campaign online.

A separate Tuesday afternoon post mentioned women in a different context, noting the platform differences between Obama and Romney on Planned Parenthood and reproductive health care.

Tumblr says it has 75.8 million blogs and that nearly 63 million posts are added daily.

As the Tumblr user who posted the original meme noted on a separate Tuesday afternoon post, "It's got a life of its own now."

This was an e-card created by a WOMAN (at least it seems so) and it was posted on an Obama campaign site. By some staffer. And it was taken down. And that is if this is demeaning (I'll defer to women to comment on that).

Denver Dave, if this was Romney, he would have kept it on his site, defended the position and made it part of the campaign.

What hypocracy. Obama & his people will jump on Romney if he makes the slightest misstep, but when they take something that is obviously offensive & use & promote it, then get called on it, they clam up up & act like it never happened. Typical O. Wake up America – he's only in it ofr himself & the 2 day a week 9 – noon high paying govt job & life time pension.

Wow, Pete. Lie much. If your position and candidate are so great then why do you have to share outright lies? What you said is wholy a lie and you know it. You are just pathetic. People need to base their decisions on what they deiscover through their own research. Look through many news sites, not just CNN, to get a broader picture of who the candidates are. I do not like how it seems the Obama campaign seems to imply that abortion, contraception and the only issues that matter to women. True, they are important, but the economy, debt, and the other issues that are top of the list for the rest of Americans are at the top of the list for women. I just hate when someone limits an entire group into a narrow mindset.

Yes it is a fact – Liberal thought is characteristically flawed to the core. It is pathologically childish, idealistic, and narcissistic.

But how do you tell 150 million people their parents really screwed them up?

the democrats are NOT pro-abortion they are pro-choice, and the republicans are NOT pro-life (otherwise they wouldn't support the death penalty) they are anti-choice.

It would be suicidal for them to do so, but I hope poor and low-income people vote for Obama and put him back in the White House. Wealthy people are not stupid. We know how to make money, whether the economy is strong or weak. Low-income households, however, can only lose money in a weak economy. They lose their cars, their jobs and their homes. And the gulf between the 'haves' and 'have-nots' widens. Please vote for Obama. I'm ready to prosper from your losses. Thank you.

Actually, the author of this article probably doesn't realize that it was originated by the Rock on an episode of WWE Monday Night Raw, a line he used to zing John Cena. But if they want to give Obama credit, I'm sure he'll take it.

To say that the GOP isn't interested in women's health is insane. I love it when the Obama campaign reminds the voters that it's pro-abortion. African Americans and Latinos need to take heed of this. This one Obama stance (and there are plenty more) goes directly against the teachings of the Catholic church, and most protestant churches. Blacks and Latinos need to wake up to this fact. Are you going to vote for a guy who supports killing babies? I hope not. Now let's talk about Obama's evolving views on gay marriage......
    -----–

as usual, the labelling is wrong...its PRO-CHOICE brainiac. See the difference? You probably don't since you've been brainwashed by the thumpers. Here's how it works...want an abortion? You can get one. Don't want one? No problem. Do you practice birth control? If so, you are acting against the teachings of the church. "Now let's talk about Obama's evolving view...."....OK. Let's also look at Mitt's...he WAS pro-choice and pro-gay rights when running for Gov of MA. NOW he's a "severe conservative" You've failed in every way. Try again later after you think about what you write before posting

While crude it does hit home ! The republicans want to legislate what women can and can´t do with their bodies !
I am totally against abortion but I wouldn´t want to take abortion back to the allies and butchers ! I think planned
parenthood is beneficial to women very little of what they do is abortions ! But I find it really strange about
how republicans will fight for the unborn but will call momma and babies pariahs and complain when our taxes go to
help feed them and put the kids through school and help give them a roof over their heads !

Don't really get what the problem is here. We see this stuff on Fb every day. But if some campaign staffer thinks it's funny, it's somehow now a reflection on Obama's class and feelings about women. Really? Come on now, folks. This is the definition of silly season.

For the pro-lifers, the issue isn't abortion at all: it's sex. Specifically it's unmarried, usually young people, like their own children, having sex. Their approach is much like it was in the 50's; keep it dangerous, restrict education, and in the event of an unwanted pregnancy, make an example of the transgressors. It's the only concept that explains their positions on abortion, sex education (which has been proven to reduce teen abortion), contraception, and single parenthood. The only acceptable option for them is abstinence until marriage, and I'm sorry, but there's never been a religious or political or social dogma that could compete with raging teenage hormones.

    @fernace

And it's so true! The things that are really important are kind of getting lost in the last big push for the White House! Women have fought diligently to improve life for ourselves, our daughters & grandkids! When life is better for the mother it's usually better for the offspring, as well, in the form of medical care & education! Right now we have a choice to set our hard work back a couple generations or to go forward w/equal rights, equal pay, equal healthcare & affordable healthcare & education for our kids! I know who my lady parts will be voting for! Obama/Biden Nov6!!
    -----------------------------------------
The problem is you won't have "offspring" as they will be aborted in the support of your (the generic your, not you specifically) promiscuous lifestyles, i.e. going out and being sl&ts with no consequences for your actions.

jose – True, we're pro-abortion if the parent is an ignorant right-winger. What better way to stem the right-wing tide of ignorance than at its source? And while we're being honest, it's fair to say that right-wingers aren't "pro-life" (that's just laughable), but anti-choice. It seems the GOP hates big government so much, they want it small enough to fit into a uterus.

In Pennsylvania a personal family friend was violently raped this past summer. In order to press charges against her attacker she was MANDATED BY THE STATE to produce the results of a pregnancy test because the RAPIST HAS PARENTAL RIGHTS TO THE CHILD. She took a personal test, found out she was, indeed, pregnant and had to G to New York for an abortion allowing enough time between the abortion and the state mandated pregnancy test for her hormones to regulate so there would be no evidence of the pregnancy because the STATE COULD PROSECUTE AND HER RAPIST COULD SUE HER for terminating the pregnancy WITHOUT HER RAPIST CONSENT!! True story. This is now the law in the state of PA. Now. Tell me your "lady parts" – or, as we adults like to call them, your vagina, uterus and ovaries – don't depend on voting the American Taliban out of office...

How extremely inappropriate. But Obama put a pedophile admirer in charge of the safety of our schoolchildren, so nothing his administration does surprises me. The idea that Romney, a moderate who used to be pro-choice, is a fanatic out to end reproductive rights is absurd. The goal of the Democrats is to scare women into supporting them, to look past their destructive agenda of outrageous spending, a failing economy, high unemployment, soaring food and gas prices, and focus on a bogeyman that doesn't exist.

People should ask these questions: where is Mitt Romney's manhood? Will Romney stand for or stand behind anything? How does Romney get a reputation for competence, given the way he is running his campaign?

"But how do you tell 150 million people their parents really screwed them up?"

That one's easy: "Reagan was lying and we have almost 4 decades of afcts to prove it."

... Am I missing something? I don't see the big deal... Is #ladyparts offensive or something? Should we all be deeply embarassed and ashamed of women's bodies being different from mens?

Democrats would be wise to stand firm on the issue that they allow women to have choice over their reproduction; because conservatives stand on the ground that they want to force a woman to carry to term a child she does not want. The choice is pretty simple. Do you believe the government has the right to tell you what to do with your vagina?
