Washington (CNN) - In brief comments to reporters on Friday, White House Senior Adviser David Plouffe questioned the credibility of Mitt Romney’s most recent attempts to distance himself from controversial comments delivered at a private fundraiser last May.
“I think he said they were inelegant,” Plouffe said, referring to Romney’s initial reaction to recordings of his “47%” comments. “There is no elegant way to attack half the country, say they’re victims, say they won’t take responsibility. These are teachers. These are veterans. These are seniors. And the most important thing is his policies reflect that approach and that disdain because his entire economic philosophy is geared toward the very wealthy and burdening the middle class.”

Facts Matter: Unemployment rate below 8%, GM is alive and Osama Bin Laden is dead
It is getting more and more difficult to believe anything former Governor Romney says.

President Bush in December 2008 bailed out GM and Chrysler, did you forget???? Obama only followed in Bush's footsteps. Obamacare was created from Romneycare, again Obama followed someone else's footsteps. And Bin Laden was worked on by Clinton and Bush and yes Obama did get Bin Laden at the end but our Ambassador is Dead and so are 3 Navy Seals.
Before the debate, Romney said that his words about the 47% who don't pay income tax were inelegant, but he stood behind what he said. Now he says that he is completely wrong about the 47%. It is good that we finally have a Republican who admits that he is wrong on something, but which Romney do we believe?
For anyone that believes Willard did not mean EXACTLY what he said, let me school you a little bit. Willard made those statements in May, he wasn't nervous; as a matter of fact he was self-assured because he was surrounded by those that are most like him. He was in his element. After the tape came out he even reiterated what he said.Therefore, the real Mitt could come out. The Willard we saw in the debate is the real thing too, a liar and flip flopper that would say anything to be elected. He kind of reminds me of a high priced working girl.
When a person speaks as candid as Willard did, he was being very truthful. It's like the words that come from a drunk. A drunk mouth speaks a sober mind and Willard was drunk on power that day so the truth came out. Now he wants to say he didn't mean it. Yeah right Willard, you said exactly what you meant.

You are absolutely 100% right about why Romney has issued this statement now. Inevitably Obama's advisors will have realized it was a mistake not to pounce on the 47% remark, and would plan to bring it up in Debate #2. Coming out with this statement so far in advance of Debate #2 ( which retraction will be dissected, examined and then forgotten in the fast paced media/ public attention span in a week) will make bringing up the remark in Debate #2 look like old news. this is strategy pure and simple, it has nothing to do with a sincere reconsideration of a position. Romney didn't offer any specifics, epiphanies or realizations as to why he has reconsidered his position. Obama lost an opportunity with this one. Fortuntely there are a quite a few more to choose from, if he decides to ramp up his approach.
Mitt hang it up. You can be forgiven for what you said, the fact that you said it at all defines your heart and character which doesn't represent the views of most of americans.
It is too little too late for Romney. What he said behind closed doors is what he really meant. I volunteer to deliver meals to seniors that live alone and don't have family members that live in the area. These are people in their 70' and 80's that live on their small social security checks. Some worked as maids, in mills and so forth very hard work. They are not freeloaders and have never been irresponsible in their lives. They do not have a large income from social security and don't have to pay federal taxes. Everyone pays some form of tax, federal and state tax on gasoline, on utility bills, property, vehicles, sales taxes and I could go on and on. I myself pay a large property tax that funds our schools, parks, police, firefighters, library and so forth. I use the library only this is the way our system works.
To four and the door ....yea..that's why Massachusetts was 47th in job creation too..and everybody so amped up about this debate. About time he had something positive. No wonder the gop is just a hoopin and hollerin. LOl! U guys r too funny

Mitt is a CEO a man used to talking to many people, a man who when talking to his board must get his point across pressingly. He was talking to a group of millionaires about obtaining his life's ambition of becoming one of the most powerful men in the world........ the President of the United States and for some reason he was not able to elegantly say something, I'm pretty sure he practice long and hard on that speech before opening his mouth in front of that crowd.

I believe health care is a good thing for states to do. They can do much better in both cost and quality of healthcare than ObamaCare. I believe many of them will come up with programs that are better than what Massachusetts has.

I disagree. I think they purposefully avoided giving Mittens the chance to launch into a prepared apology speech during the debate. Mittens attempt to do it now anyway indicates that he had been desperately hoping for the opportunity during the debate and, because it never materialized, he and Faux Noise had to manufacture the opportunity for him to do it.

Yes, Obamacare came from Romneycare. When he created Romneycare, Mitt said it would be the model for the country. Now that it is, in fact, the model for the country, he wants to appeal it.
So, he was for it when it was his, but now he is against it because it isn't is? Etch-a-sketch, flip flop, call it what you will. The man continues to distance himself from all his past opinions.
