Paul Ryan: Pressure is on for VP debate

(CNN) - Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan said Monday that Mitt Romney's widely-applauded debate performance upped the ante for Ryan's own showdown this week.

"He raised the bar quite high, that's for sure. Mitt definitely put the pressure on from that perspective," Ryan said on Detroit radio station WJR, just days before his match-up against Vice President Joe Biden on Thursday.

A new Gallup poll released Monday indicates Romney experienced a post-debate bounce after last week's event in Denver, and other surveys, including a CNN/ORC International poll, showed debate watchers considered Romney the clear winner.

On Sunday, a number of campaign advisers and surrogates conceded President Barack Obama did not meet expectations and signaled the campaign may make "adjustments," using Biden on Thursday as the first attempt to come back.

But multiple Democratic sources told CNN the campaign does not expect Biden to make up for the president's showing in the first presidential debate.

The two vice presidential running mates will face off in their first and only debate at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky.

Ryan, repeating a line he used this weekend in a separate interview, said he expects the vice president to launch at him "like a cannon ball."

"Because they had such a bad debate, Joe Biden is just going to come flying at us," Ryan said. "It seems pretty clear that their new strategy is just basically to call us liars, to descend down into a mud pit, and hopefully with enough mudslinging back and forth–and distortion–people get demoralized and they can win by default."

The Wisconsin congressman was referring to the Obama campaign's post-debate argument, which used television ads, stump speeches and interview shows to make the case that Romney was dishonest during the first debate, namely on Romney's tax plan. Obama campaign senior adviser David Axelrod on Sunday phrased Romney's performance as unchecked "brazenness."

"That's something we're going to have to make an adjustment for in these subsequent debates," Axelrod added on CBS.

Playing the expectations game, Ryan continued to raise the bar for Biden, reminding listeners that the former 36-year senator has decades of experience.

"He's been on this national stage more than anyone else in politics," Ryan said, further describing Biden as "gifted," "extremely experienced" and a "proven debater."

But he said Biden has one big problem to overcome.

"He has to defend Barack Obama's record and it's not a very good record to defend," Ryan said.

Now that Romney has set a new standard on Presidential debates smack downs, everybody else will be judged by those standards. Yes, Ryan will be judged using high standards. It is his first national debate and Biden has done this numerous times in his presidential runs and in 2008. Ryan knows his stuff but he isn't well practiced in debating. Fighting Crazy Joe to a draw would be a victory. The two things that Ryan has going for him is his intelligence and his in depth knowledge of the government budget. He should also be loaded with the numerous Biden gaffes and stupid ideas, like splitting up Iraq. Biden is held out as some foreign policy guru but he has been wrong on everything he ever staked out. It is scary this guy is as close to the Whitehouse as he is. I think he's losing his marbles.

I think Paul Ryan could sleep through half of the debate, and still come out better than Joe Biden. I'll bet he has an emergency, and becomes unreachable in Uzbekistan or some other remote place.

Of course it's not a debate when Judge Jim Gray is excluded. The "two" parties have a lock in power. What flavor would you like your vanilla?

VP Biden will be forced to go back to the tired old cliché attacks of their campian ads just like the President did in his debate. He can't defrnd the economic record so he will use the phony Dem caricatures of Romney to try to scare people.

Ryan is better than Romney in citing facts and "Arithmatic" and Joe Biden isn't close to the presidents intelectual abilities. It just might be an embarassing night for Biden and a tough next day for the Dems and the liberal media.

If Lyin' Ryan doesn't have time to explain the math of the Romney/Ryan plans in the VP debate, Biden should yield some of his time to Ryan for an explanation!!

Ryan was quoted as saying that people on medicare and medicaid are "Mooshers" and "looters." Be VERY afraid of that man. He is dangerous and wacko. I know this because he is Ayn Randian. I have read every word that woman ever wrote. Her philosophy is is for two dimensional thinkers. In her world, there are no paradaoxes, contradictions, mysteries, or shades of grey. Everything is black and white and oversimplified. The rich are good. The poor and middle class are bad if they demand better working conditions or better pay, or better retirement plans.

Should be interesting, maybe Biden will insist on Ryan explaining his tax and budget plan. There is no way to lower the dept without raising taxes.

"It seems pretty clear that their new strategy is just basically to call us liars,..."

They call them as they see them. Ryan thinks he can use some kind of reverse psychology to make Biden less aggressive out of spite. That's the latest Romney/Ryan strategy.

    @Caron
I agree, anybody that praises Ayn Rand shouldn't be allowed anywhere near office. This philosophy teaches a handful own everything, and everybody else should be a slave and religion should be banished. This guy has praised that publicly again and again (videos all over youtube w/ him saying it). Ayn Rand was a demon, and guys like Ryan are it's servant.

People who lie usually do well at debates. It is a game with them. They have no feelings of remorse. Only elation when they beat their opponents. Ryan looks like the court jester in a Romney kingdom. This play has been going on too long. It feels like my life is on hold until this race is over. Can't wait until I can breath again knowing President Obama is in the White House.

DDW. Ohh...you are so wrong. Debts are never eliminated by raising taxes. The only way toreduce the 5 T Obama has rung up is to increase the base by increasing jobs. More revenue thru more people working. Its htat easy

I look forward to seeing how far Biden goes. Biden is interesting for two reasons: He knows no limits and is GUARANTEED to say something he regrets later. God love the guy.

Even Ryan will be denying his own budget plan like Romney did because he scares the heck out of any normal person. Expect him to lie like Romney about cutting taxes for the rich and killing Medicare. Maybe he will also support the assassination of Big Bird like Mittster did to appease the PBS hating right wingers after moving to the left on everything else. These guys are a pair of lying hypocrites.

Caron Speas, it appears maybe Mr Ryan is correct. He states that the plan of the Obama campaign may be one that calls the Romney campaigners liars and tries to sling mud. Your comment seems to make this appear accurate.

DK- no, actually her philosophy teaches people should take personal responsibility or else the government take control and then tax the h€ll out of those who are living responsibly.

Axelrod has been campaign manager for various campaigns in the past and has a history of just calling people liars when his candidate has lost some ground. He is a little rat with no principles.
