Romney revives 8% unemployment critique at rainy rally

Newport News, Virginia (CNN) - Mitt Romney rolled out a new response to last week’s jobs numbers during a rain-soaked rally in Newport News Monday, where he took heart from a group of several hundred hardy - and sodden - supporters.

After the release of Friday's government report showing unemployment had dipped to 7.8%, its lowest rate in years, Romney dropped a regular line attacking President Barack Obama for presiding over 43 months in office with a rate higher than 8%.

On Monday afternoon, Romney revived the criticism by tweaking the line.

"We've seen the slowest recovery from a recession in history," he told the audience. "As a matter of fact, I just read that if you look back 60 years, and you look at all the months we had with unemployment about 8% before President Obama, there were 39 months in all 60 years with unemployment above 8%."

"With this president, there've been 43 months under one president alone," he continued. "He does not understand what it takes to create a real recovery. I do."

During his campaign stops in a state where unemployment is far lower than the national average at 5.9%, Romney repeatedly lauded the "conservative leadership" of Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell. McDonnell campaigned with Romney Monday.

With his collar pulled up against the driving rain, Romney told the audience members swathed in ponchos they gave him confidence.

"People wonder why it is I'm so confident we're going to win," he said. "I'm confident because I see you here on a day like this. This is unbelievable!"

Earlier in the day, Romney saw something else that encouraged him: a group of elementary schoolers who waved to his motorcade as it passed their school.

The campaign said Romney immediately declared he wanted to go back and greet the children, so his motorcade made a u-turn. The GOP presidential nominee then greeted a line of Fairfield Elementary children who waited outdoors to shake his hand.

"Thanks for waving at me as I came by. I decided to come by and say hi to you guys," he told them before posing for a group picture.

Sorry Mitt, that line of attack sounds even dumber now.

The debate showed many that the Emperor has no clothes and this former Governor has the mettle to lead the country.
The temporary insanity of hope and change rhetoric and speeches behind columns hopefully will be history. The country can be taken seriously again if Romney is elected.

Nice work Mitt. Keep the argument as dumb as possible. Keep the blinders up on all the people that don't realize how american is falling behind the rest of the world so you can also keep pushing your republican ideas of only educating the elite few so the USA can fall behind even more while you line your pockets.

Romney is such a plastic fake. Now that he lied and got his bump, he thinks it'sgame over. Not so fast. There are still 2 debates, and Romney is very uncomfortable when asked questions abouit real Americans. Obama is a little down, but not out. He has the diversity vote, and Romney is the ususal white guys.

I hope the questions to Romney are about his money and which countries it resides in, why he never started another business with his millions to create jobs, why his good-for-nothing sons never worked a day in their lives. He has been out of work for 6 years, and still won't explain himself on Bain, and tax evasiion. Don't get overconfident, Obama will do a huge reversal and will be comfortable answering questions TRUTHFULLY in the next 2 debates. . Also, Obama's handliing of foreign policy outranks a has-been failure of a governor any day. The final debate will tell all. Ronmey is a plastic putocrat, who will say anything and spin anything to make himself look good. He is a sheister, and more than half the country already knows that.

The attack on the unemployment report is unprecedented. It is too bad that the numbers are showing that people are going to work. No one said this is marvelous or that this means everything is back to normal. IT IS A NUMBER!

Mitt Romney did not like that number so he is showing us his own take on the unemployment figures. How come he is doing this now? What has he done to increase employment opportunities? He certainly has had time to work on some ideas. His last company, Bain, merged companies and in the wake of these mergers people lost their jobs. No one suggested re-training people so that they could get new jobs. That would not be too hard for a company like Bain to have done. They certainly made huge profits.

Are we allowing Mr. Romney to show one side in private talks and another in person? What else has he said without cameras or tape recorders there? That is a huge red flag.

Mitt Romney is such an embaressment! It is a shame he lied so much in the debate. We are Republicans voting for Obama because we are sick and tired of wealthy people not paying their share of taxes and then the burden goes to us middle class folks. I will never vote for a person who wants to be President of the US, but puts money in foreign countries. It just does not seem Mitt Romney is very pro-America and patriotic. If he gets elected, the middle class will become the poor class, the wealthier will get wealthier, the middle class will pay much, much higher taxes, if you have a pre-existing condition the insurance will be able to drop you and the list goes on and on..........you can check all of this out from independent fact checkers...........Mitt Romney just does not care for anyone who is not wealthy! Even my neighbor's 16 year old watched the debate and pointed out all where Romney lied.....he even remembered watching Romney on tv stating the exact oppposite of what he said in the debates. A lot of people could learn from this 16 year old!

Romney's greeting with the elementary school children was pure damage control after his snubbing of the kids from the Nickelodeon special where young children have the opportunity to ask the presidential candidates questions.

  13. Republicans; the "Not Intended to be Factually Accurate" Party

I see a cartoon of Obama; He`s got a shield in 1 hand and a sword in the other. The sword strikes down bin laden; the shiled deflects arrows shot by the right [Romney, Gingrich, Limbaugh] . and a muscular but lean Obama pulls Congress up a Hill labeled Jobs.

The only thing Willard understands is how to change your stance and lie to fool the electorate. God help us if this man is elected.

The rain will not wash the slime off this lie spewing unemployed candidate. Maybe when he dries off he will straighten out from twisting 720 degrees with his flip flops.

How about going back 100 years and take a look at how much unemployment was left after a Republican Administration gifted a Democratic Administration. Bet you President Obama won't be alone. Looking at just 60 years doesn't give a full picture on either party's unemployment record.

Romney conveniently leaves out the part that how McDonnell was able to accomplish a 5.9% unemployment rate in Virginia was due to federal stimulus funding that he accepted from the big federal government courtesy of President Obama.

I think the President is making a huge mistake not to be talking about his jobs bill that the Republican blocked. I think it is going to come down to the work of God whether he is re-elected or not but he has to earn it if this is something God wants to happen.
