Romney revives 8% unemployment critique at rainy rally

Newport News, Virginia (CNN) - Mitt Romney rolled out a new response to last week’s jobs numbers during a rain-soaked rally in Newport News Monday, where he took heart from a group of several hundred hardy - and sodden - supporters.

After the release of Friday's government report showing unemployment had dipped to 7.8%, its lowest rate in years, Romney dropped a regular line attacking President Barack Obama for presiding over 43 months in office with a rate higher than 8%.

On Monday afternoon, Romney revived the criticism by tweaking the line.

"We've seen the slowest recovery from a recession in history," he told the audience. "As a matter of fact, I just read that if you look back 60 years, and you look at all the months we had with unemployment about 8% before President Obama, there were 39 months in all 60 years with unemployment above 8%."

"With this president, there've been 43 months under one president alone," he continued. "He does not understand what it takes to create a real recovery. I do."

During his campaign stops in a state where unemployment is far lower than the national average at 5.9%, Romney repeatedly lauded the "conservative leadership" of Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell. McDonnell campaigned with Romney Monday.

With his collar pulled up against the driving rain, Romney told the audience members swathed in ponchos they gave him confidence.

"People wonder why it is I'm so confident we're going to win," he said. "I'm confident because I see you here on a day like this. This is unbelievable!"

Earlier in the day, Romney saw something else that encouraged him: a group of elementary schoolers who waved to his motorcade as it passed their school.

The campaign said Romney immediately declared he wanted to go back and greet the children, so his motorcade made a u-turn. The GOP presidential nominee then greeted a line of Fairfield Elementary children who waited outdoors to shake his hand.

"Thanks for waving at me as I came by. I decided to come by and say hi to you guys," he told them before posing for a group picture.

Romney says he is able to bring about recovery. As a so-called "business consultant" Romney claims to be effective. In my opinion, a business consultant would have had to work in business before being a consultant, not becoming one after graduating college with a MBA. I support Obama in 2012.

Many of the 7.8 % unemployed, got so by the implementation of programs during the Bush debacle. Yes debacle. His was not a presidency I'd call leadership. More like four years of mental illness, gone berserk.

What are the real unemployment numbers; taking into account the Obama Political buy offs to delay furloughs, layoffs, etc ...
Surely Lockheed isn't the only example of how the Obama camp is manipulating the unemployment numbers.
ABC News report this By Mary Bruce and Jake Tapper
"At White House Request, Lockheed Martin Drops Plan to Issue Layoff Notices"
This leaves little question about whether the Obama Oligarchs are manipulating the Job numbers before the election.
Why cook the numbers when they can buy off those that can affect the numbers?

Romney then asked the children what they wanted to be when they grew up, suggesting alternatives to the kids that aspired to take jobs he was planning to send overseas.

Shouldn't these kids have been in school learnign instead of being outside waiting for Romney's motorcade as it passed their school, and we wonder why our kids are falling behind.

Living in Norfolk, it strikes me as odd that a bunch of Elementary School students just happened to be lined up outside in the pouring rain to be waving at a random group of cars on a residential street nowhere near Newport News or Lexington. I guess that they were an extremely lucky group of Very Young Republicans? It is a good thing that this week Mitt Romney supports education.

Did Mormon Bishop Mittens also check the historical data that says: 13/14 recessions in US history – including the GREAT DEPRESSION and GREAT RECESSION – have occurred under a GOP President?

Mitt Romney suffered from multi-personality disorder ... He says what ever the people in front of him want to hear...Neither side can trust Mitt ...Mitt can not even trust himself from 10 days ago...Right after the Wisconsin recall election he said there was the proof we do not need more policemen, firemen, teachers..on the taxpayers expense..

RobMe is a liar accoding to this grade 8 math wiz: "My dad earns $45,000 per year and pays a 25% tax rate. He takes $26,000 in deductions so he pays ($45,000-$26,000)x25% = $4,750 in taxes. With RobMe my dad's tax rate would be 25%x80%=20%. He will take $17,000 so his tax will be ($45,000-$17,000)x20%=$5,000. RobMe increases my dad'd tax by $5,600-$4,750=$850!" There you go RobMe liar!

How convenient to not include the Great Depression in his statement. Not since the 30s have we had an economic collapse of this magnitude. He's comparing apples to oranges. Just another manipulation of the facts, bordering on a lie.

obama gave 2 billion dollars to Brazil so they could drill oil off shore, but he wont let us drill for our own oil! Obama's stimulus included over $8.5 billion in grants for wind farms that flowed overseas, despite Congressional criticism from both sides of the aisle. In total, over half of the money went to either foreign developers or foreign wind turbine manufacturers, creating thousands of jobs overseas!
Obama used tax payer money to save the car companies who then opened factories in mexico. Obama is wasting tax payer money creating jobs everywhere but America!

It seems to me it is very easy for the Obama administration (Labor Dept) to fake the unemployment stats. A survey of 60,000 households in North Dakota (lowest unemployment rate) would have very different results from a survey in Nevada (the highest). Now I don't know how the Labor Dept selects the households it surveys, but with 60,000 each month I am willing to bet a computer does it. The labor dept knows exactly which zip codes have the lowest unemployment rates. It would take about an hour for one actuary and one computer programmer to "select" the households to be surveyed each month..............just saying
