Obama ad hits Romney over Medicaid

(CNN) - Pivoting from a sarcastic Big Bird ad released Tuesday morning, President Barack Obama's campaign put out a more serious television spot in the afternoon, this time painting Mitt Romney as a threat to nursing homes.

The 30-second commercial, "Only Choice," attacks Romney's plan to block-grant Medicaid and allow states to manage the system, rather than the federal government.

Juxtaposed against a series of images of seniors in nursing homes, the ad's narrator points to fees on nursing home beds that Romney enacted as Massachusetts governor. The fees were part of a host of fees, as well as closed loopholes, the then-governor implemented in order to close the state's budget deficit.

The ad, however, seizes on the fact that a large portion of Medicaid goes to nursing homes.

"It's one of the hardest decisions a family can make: realizing a nursing home is the only choice," the narrators says. "For many middle class families, Medicaid is the only way to afford the care."

The narrator adds that Romney's Medicaid proposals would cut the program by a third and burden "families with the cost of nursing home care."

"We have a president who won't let that happen," the ad says.

Romney's team, however, has argued in the past that his budget plan would not make cuts to Medicaid but would slow the growth of the system instead.

Responding to the ad Tuesday, a spokeswoman for the campaign stood by the candidate's plan for Medicaid, arguing that it allows for more "flexibility."

"By giving states greater flexibility and the incentive to provide coverage more efficiently, Governor Romney will ensure that low-income Americans receive the care they need while also bringing federal spending back under control," Amanda Henneberg said in a statement.

The Obama campaign said the new ad will air in the battleground states of New Hampshire, Virginia, North Carolina, Florida, Ohio, Iowa, Colorado, and Nevada.

And this is what will happen under Obama care. Feel free to challenge, or call me names, but you can't move this much around without some people being negatively impacted. That's where the government does its "acceptable outcome" logistics.

The most vulnerable will ultimately lose in Obama care.

People who have money will move to private doctors who will move out of the system like private schools. Sure, they still pay for public schools through taxes, like the Obama care tax penalty, but they end up with better resources. Guessing a lot of you Obama supporters really never thought that we are just going to create the same inequity we have in the school system where everyone is brought down to the lowest tier.

Amazing.......Romney wants to give states "flexibility" in administering the Medicaid program because they know best......but when Obama granted "flexibility" to states on the welfare to work requirement, Romney accused him of "gutting" the requirement. Honestly.......how does this man sleep at night? And how does he expect us to take him seriously whenever he opens his mouth and words come out?

Seniors need to think about the 716 Billion Obama took out of Medicare. Obama can't run on his record so he lies. Romney's changes do not affect any seniors. No one over 55. Democrats can do nothing but name calling and lying. Romney's going to make the changes we need. God help us if Obama wins and we have 4 more years and 6 trillion more added to the debt.

The truth shall set US free. Really "'Flexibility.'" What does that mean for the hard working middle class. People who tirelessly work to provide a better future for their children, while trying to care of their aging parents. Those of US who have to stretch our dollars to make ends meet.

Romney was extremely successful as Governor of MA. During his time there he turned a 3 Billioin dollar deficit to a $2 Billion surplus. Unemployment went from 5.6 to 4.7%. Schools did great. More lies on here. Bunch of haters. What's Obama's record. 15 Million more on unemployment, 6 trillion added to the deficit, Gas prices have doubled, food prices have increased dramatically, and average household income has fallen approx. $4000.

As a nation having already saddled future generations with $16 trillion of debt and we know it will get to $20 trillion...yes, we absolutely need to be electing leaders who aren't afraid of ruffling a few feathers to get control. That is not Obama. His budget is the debt ceiling and whatever he can do to get it higher he will spend to. He needs financial counseling.

@ Bill – totally agree. Let's have that conversation about the neglect in Libya and the handling of the aftermath – disgraceful – on every level. I don't see any headlines on this website about that. And there's plenty of breaking news today regarding the State Department's negligence regarding the Ambassador's requests for more security. CNN considers a desperate Obama ad with Big Bird to be top news.
