Team Romney word on the street for Big Bird tactics: 'Troubling'

Editor's note: Part of an occasional series on the #homestretch to Election Day with GOP nominee Mitt Romney

En route Des Moines, Iowa (CNN) - With 28 days to go, can you tell us how to get away from Sesame Street?

It doesn't take a campaign report from Kermit the Frog to figure out Mitt Romney woke up to the equivalent of an Oscar the Grouch style ad from the Obama campaign this morning.

Mocking the GOP nominee for threatening to take the axe to federal funding for public broadcasting at last week's presidential debate, the spot's narrator intones breathlessly: "Mitt Romney knows it's not Wall Street you have to worry about, it's Sesame Street."

Step aside Big Labor and Big Oil. Is Big Bird this year's October Surprise? Elmo... call your agent. He's not tickled.

En route to a stop in Iowa where Romney was to detail his plan for American farmers, senior campaign adviser Kevin Madden was of course asked about poultry, of the large and yellow kind.

"I just find it troubling that the president's message, the president's focus, 28 days before Election Day is Big Bird," Madden said.

"The governor is going to focus acutely on jobs and the economy and what he can do to create a better, more prosperous future for the American people," he added.

Still, Romney has yet to be pressed on how eliminating funding for PBS would have much of an effect on the deficit.

"You would need to cut PBS more than 1,000 times to fill the hole in Romney's debate promises," an Obama campaign email pointed out, announcing its new spot.

Both the Republican National Committee and the Romney campaign blasted out emails to reporters, with a reminder of what then Senator Obama said during his speech to the Democratic convention in 2008.

"If you don't have any fresh ideas, then you use stale tactics to scare the voters. If you don't have a record to run on, then you paint your opponent as someone people should run from. You make a big election about small things," Obama said.

No one is "firing" Big Bird. Romney just wants Sesame Street's billion dollar industry to fund themselves.

    "

Oh really? And how to you propose they do that? By having corporate America in charge of your child's education? You like having them watch commercials, turning them into little consumers before they're even in school?

For those whining, it's $1.35/person/year to fund PBS. Seriously. Your scream about that, but you're aok w. the war machine? Priorities, people.

Mitt brought it up and now he's complaining that someone was paying attention. Too bad, so sad.

That comment is just another in a long long long line of statements that show that this guys cares about nobody but Mitt Romney. If you are Mitt then he's got your back. But if you are anyone else. Your outta luck

Typical liberal nonsense. Ask for specifics and then when you get them, just bash away. What would the Democrats cut? Nothing is the answer to that. Continue to spend spend spend on anything and everything and then just blame the grown ups when they want to take the toys away. This is almost too predictable to even comment on. Almost.....

Its more about cancelling the Democratic Party television agenda of hyper-liberal leftist trash that is prevalent on public tv programs like Sesame Street. I mean how many times does a kid need to see Mikey's two dads or two moms on a daily basis. They even delve into the single mom with 12 kids (4 dads) quite often. They teach kids that its ok to have 3 stepdads as that's how American families live. At no time do they ever mention a mom, dad, and kids. NO, that's outside of Sesame Street's agenda as its totally based on educating kids that the "normal" family is something you see in downtown Harlem. Its fitting that Sesame Street is ran by television welfare dollars because the key demographic is 100 percent on entitlement programs.

Thats funny.. we found it troubling that Rmoney's focus was big bird. And all of this whining from a party whose convention theme was based on a willful misrepresentation of what Obama said.

Obama hasn't a leg to stand on when it comes to his record. His tactic instead is to distract and deflect the attention from himself in whatever way he can. I'm tired of the rhetoric. It seems at times to be the only thing he excels at.

If Big Bird and PBS funding is no big deal, then why did Mr. Romney bring it up during the debate? Mr. Romney is the most frightening type of politician. He changes his position often and has no problem twisting facts to suit his current agenda. Just go back and watch the debates in the Republican primaries. Maybe there is a good reason that his opponents, like Newt Gingrich, called him dishonest.

Come on Gov. Romney. Lay off public assistance. Without government funded TV who would educate our government supported children?
    "

Um. Most kids grew up watching PBS, not just those on public assistance.

Romney hates America or AMERCIA. He has already stated this, but It's really sad when a political party's 1st priority for getting Americans back to work and paying down the debt is to spend 4 years talking about Sesame Street. It's good to see Conservatives still have their heads up their butt holes. Romney would be the one to take this country into another Civil War, if every foreign country he has already angered doesn't attack us first.

It's funny how the Democrats ripped on Clint Eastwood for talking to an empty chair. It's amazing Clint Eastwood could predict the debate. More empty chairs to come...

16 members of the Special Forces security team at our Embassy in Libya - a high-risk location - were cut just weeks before the attack at Benghazi that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and 3 others. According to the unit's commander, the diplomatic staff were told "they just had to make do with less" despite expressing their legitimate concerns for their safety.

And now Obama's worries about Big Bird?

All you liberals out there are absolutely ridiculous. If you listened to the debate, Romney simply stated that we need to look at programs in which we are borrowing money from China for, if they are not 100% completely necessary than he would look to cut them. I can't believe that you are all make a comparison between what is going on with our economy and big bird....talk about desparate. By the way, PBS CAN SURVIVE WITHOUT THE TAX MONEY THEY RECEIVE.

Harsh Times...yes we would like to kick in a very few dollars for Sesame Street. I would prefer to help fund an educational program over Wall Street Banksters and Oil Companies. The same ruinous old path you mention was created by your last President, GWB. And now this numbskull wants to give more to the wealthy on the backs of the poor. Beautiful!

Romney has said a lot of stupid stuff. After while you realize he's just not that smart and goes off script and blurts out what he truly believes.. This Big Bird comment was just icing on the cake. He obviously really thinks cutting PBS funding is the answer to our debt. Romney's handlers can run and try to bluff but they can't ever erase his bumbling and idiotic statements. 47%, anyone? Have you forgotten? I know I haven't.

I think folks need to start looking at the forest instead of the tree, what the Obama campaign is trying to do is highlight how little substance there is to Willard's so called plan to reduce the deficit, our republican friends (who definitely have their blinders on, are thinking of the tree, but no the big signs that show the forest). Mittens has no clue what is important and what is no, by talking about PBS funding and big bird he just demonstrated how shallow his plan and understanding of the issue is.

Is this the best the libs can do, blast Romney because he wants PBS to become self sufficient? Get a clue folks, we are 16 Trillion + in debt. Who is going to pay for the runaway spending? We need to start reducing government give away programs.

It is sad that only in America a republican presidential candidate is judged by performance and not substance. It is sad that many seem to be okay with shiploads of lies being fed to them on an hourly basis. It is sad that a large part of the electorate does not have the skills to differentiate or to think and analyze. The republican party is the party mainly of the dumb, uneducated people and if Romney gets elected we get what we deserve.
Wake up America, when you want continuation of civilization vote all republicans out of office!

This just demostrates how short sighted the current administration is on the economy. Romey is using PBS as a relatable example of places to cut spending outside of heathcare and defense. We all know that PBS alone is not going to solve the budget crisis....Prove to this administration that the American people are not stupid like they think!
