VIDEO: Obama 'surprised' by Romney, Durbin says

(CNN) - Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois, a longtime friend of President Barack Obama, said Tuesday the president was "surprised" in last week's debate against Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

"He was shocked and surprised, many of us were. Mitt Romney came on that set at the first debate and said things which completely contradicted what he'd said in the campaign before. I think it caught the president a little bit by surprise. He won't be surprised again," Durbin said on CNN's "Starting Point with Soledad O'Brien."

    They need to stop spinning the President's failure to launch last Thursday. They are starting to sound like the Repugnicants.
    I'm sure the President has more than enough reasons to be pissed off. God knows he's been pissed on by the GOP.
    He needs to give as good as he gets. We know he's classy, he needs to be more brassy.
    Damn the torpedoes, full steam ahead!
    Obama 2012.

    Do not expect Obama to provoke a battle of ideologies in any of the next 2 debates. Do not expect him to challenge Mitt Romney any fiercer than debate 1. Why? Because he will be embarrassed even worse on stage in front of 70 million Americans. He cannot win with losing ideologies. He knows that. If anything he may throw out a personal attack or two. But that will just make him look less presidential. His best strategy is to go out with some dignity. He owes it to you and his other supporters.

    For future discussions I have simplified the Obama supporters' arguments so that they will still be able to get their point across without all the bad grammar, misspellings, name-calling and hyperbole that is characteristic of his following. Please use the following number system in the interest of a succinct, coherent (albeit false) narrative to illustrate Obama's success in office and argue against Romney's proposed policies:
    1=They lie
    2=47%
    3=Flipflop
    4=Show me your taxes

    I did not know that having your money in offshore accounts was a personal attack. What about taking all the allowable deduction to get your tax rate to the lowest possible position, and then when your fellow American do the same but their low income exempts them from paying taxes - you call then irresponsible. While he was in a public office his job creation rates rank among the lowest in the country. I know people wanted Obama out of office even before he started high school, but please pick somebody who wants something more than just to be in the oval offices.

    BTW– I paid more in taxes than Romney did.

    Romney is sadly the worst flip-flopper ever witnessed in politics, currently trying to throw conservatives under the bus from statements he made just a few months ago.

    Sorry, no trust for Romney at all–he is willing to lie and say anything.

    Romney paid over $3 million in taxes in both 2010 and 2011. If you paid more than $3 million in each of those years, we thank you. If you paid less, you're a liar.

    Facts show that Mitt Romney paid $500,000 more taxes last year than he was legally required to. You will need to find another avenue to try and attack him personally. Maybe attack his religion? Or his success some more? Apparently for a conservative candidate everything is fair game.

    Lynda/ Minnesota do you feel as I do that there is just nothing left to see here?
    I'm ready to vote. NOW.
    ---------–

    Hard to believe we've spent so much time fighting the media for truth and honesty these past 4 years, isn't it? What a sad commentary on American politics. But, yeah. I'm ready to vote. Have been since the primary circus evolved into a side show of same old, same old fake polls and talking points.

    Four you sound almost as comical trying to sound sincerely sympathetic as you do in your diehard support for a flip-flopping bought and paid for puppet like Romney.
    I still remember the days during the so-called GOP primaries where you and others like you on this site were flip-flopping faster than Mittens from one candidate to another because they were dropping like flies for one reason or another.
    So thanks, but save your sympathies for yourself.
    My president owes me nothing he's done a helluva good job in spite of your team's decision to make him fail even if that meant that the country would fail as well.
    Obama 2012 – because America deserves the best.

    Romney opposed the government bailout and pushed for a privately financed, managed bankruptcy of the two automakers. In February, GM announced record annual profit, and regained its position as the world's largest automaker.

    Does this really tell you something about Romney approach? Privately financed is just another way of saying corporate raiders to then sell off the assets. Obama did something that most in his own party did not agree with and the results was saving GM and having them move back as the leading automaker. Romney would have had them deal with private financing that would have made a quick $$$ and left GM as a small time player in the automobile industry.

    I think the President stood his own at the debate with no mistakes! I thought it was a smart thing yet, risky to let Mitt Romney talk, talk, and change positions again. New Romney health care plan? Really! Was anyone really listening? The used car salesman had another set of plans? New war now with Iran? Are Mitts Romney’s sons going to enlist to fight his new war or will he write a check for the cost? Reverse regulations, tax cuts for wealthy and put big bird in a box! Big Bird service rural America! RED STATES need big bird!
    Hey, and someone finally told this man that the 47% that don’t pay taxes need to turn their back on him. Mississippi, you are the 47%. Texas, Alabama, Missouri, Louisiana, Carolinas, you are the 47%. You are also over weight, poor and dying of Cancer and the Republicans just don’t care. Why don’t you join the democrats? Talking about and missing the mark on failed Republican leadership! Where is the farm bill that the republicans would not vote on or the veteran’s bill! Everybody grocers goes up and farmers in the red states are hurt and that hurt spreads to all America! Vote your problem out! Boehner, gone. McConnell, gone! Republicans GONE! America need a new day! Mitt Romney has done business with all the rove countries and has helped their GDP while hurting America and the American workers.
    My dream job was to be a brain surgeon, but I can’t cut up a chicken. Willard Mitt Romney dream job is to be President, but he can’t get his facts straight and he can’t separate his greedy nature from his pocketbook. What‘s in it for him? HUM bragging rights only!
    Stand for something or fall for anything!
