Ann Romney's Welsh cake emergency

(CNN) - Steering clear of politics, first lady hopeful Ann Romney appeared on ABC's "Good Morning America" Wednesday to talk cooking and horse therapy. But while Romney's appearance in the show's 8 a.m. ET hour was devoid of campaign news, it was not without culinary drama.

As Mrs. Romney was being introduced to the show, standing alone in the "GMA" studio kitchen, the Republican candidate's wife noticed her famous Welsh cakes burning on the griddle.

"Oh, and they're burning," said Romney clad in a bright red dress similar to the one she wore as she spoke to the Republican National Convention in August.

"Tell us about these," host George Stephanopoulos said proceeding to introduce her from a separate set away from the kitchen despite the burning cakes.

"They're burning," she replied. "You've got to turn the griddle down."

"I got a cooking emergency," Romney continued with a laugh. "The griddle's too hot. But I'm here. I'm making Welsh cakes. My grandmother taught me how to make them. I'm teaching my grandchildren how to make them."

Ann Romney's Welsh cakes have become her staple on the campaign trail, often doling out the traditional family treat to reporters traveling with she and her husband as they campaign across the country.

"You know, my grandfather started working in Wales at age six and my grandmother from the time they could ever remember ate Welsh cakes every day at three o'clock and so I'm learning how. I learned from my grandmother and now I'm teaching my grandkids."

Husband and GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney said that he watched his wife on "GMA" but was more concerned with the fiery political ads surrounding the segment than the heat that burned Mrs. Romney's Welsh cakes.

"This morning my wife was on 'Good Morning America' between the eight and nine o'clock time hour and I got to watch her but between her segments I also watched some of the ads, some of the ads on me, and it's a good thing I don't do that very often because my blood pressure would be very high," said Romney to supporters in Ohio Wednesday.

Later in the program, culinary drama stirred again as actor Stanley Tucci talked about his new cookbook on the kitchen set. Standing by Mrs. Romney and Stephanopoulos a pot started to overheat, appearing to spew hot butter onto the kitchen.

"They burned my Welsh cakes too!" Mrs. Romney said.

"I don't know, my plane almost goes down, now I almost get burned with butter," Romney joked referring to when her campaign plane was forced to make an emergency landing in Colorado last month due to an apparent electrical fire.

Far from the studio kitchen, Romney also appeared in Times Square standing next to the horse and rider who represented the United States in London at the Paralympic Games over the summer. She touted the benefits of horse therapy for everyone from children who have autism to wounded war veterans, also dipping into her own struggle with Multiple Sclerosis and the benefits riding had on her illness.

Stephanopoulos said "GMA" has reached out to first lady Michelle Obama to appear on the show and she is considering it as she is working out her schedule.

In closing, Stephanopoulos apologized to Mrs. Romney for coming close to causing a stovetop meltdown.

"Thank you to Ann Romney. Sorry we nearly blew you up," he said.

And what makes you think michelle obama is not used to having things taken care of for her. Yes before she was married but that was some time ago. Her mother now lives at the white house as i understand and takes care of the children and everyday house chores. But before she moved to the white house i guarantee you she had domestic help. And further coming from a middleclass family rather than upper income family does not give you more right to be the first lady. As far as the convention speeches are concerned i found michelles speech a little militant and self rightous. Anns speech was timid and fluffy but i think each had a differnet reasons why there speeches were different. The bottom line is any class status is entitled to be president . Thats the greatness of our country. I like mitt romney and will be voting for him and not because he wealthy. I like his message and he will help the people economically to prosper as a nation by creating jobs so people can help themselves rather than the goverment take care of them. Once the goverment starts to become too big they will start dictating what you eat , how to live , who should get what and who should not. No Thank you. Thats not what the pilgrams sailed here for from england . That is not who we are as a nation!

So you come from a different background than Anne. Does that make you a better person? Does that make Anne less of a person? Good thing neither of these ladies is up for election! Now get back to your "save big bird campaign".

I don't know when was the last time Mrs. Romeny cooked anything. This is just a show off. As they say if you can't a little heat get out of the kitchen. In her case it is ok because she does not need to enter the kitchen to cook except to order the cheff (s) in her house unlike the middle class and the poor familites in the country.

Best wishes to the lovely Ms Mitts, and I hope she has plenty of time the next four years teaching her grand kids how to cook, in her many kitchens OUTSIDE of Washington.

They're really trying hard to make this couple seem like ordinary everyday Americans. Take away the millions and billions of dollars and maybe they'd have to start living like the rest of us do. Then maybe they could relate to having to work every day, juggle the bills, and go to work sick because you can't afford to go to the doctor due to lack of health insurance, or go to work sick because you have to save your sick days for when the kids are sick. . . .somehow I don't think Ann Romney has ever had to deal with any of those things.

There are people who have to worry about the availability of the next meal, and there are people with diseases and illness!
    Dear Mrs. Romney,

Would you willing to give all or half of your billions to the poor and the ill, so each can have a horse for therapy?
Maybe your mormon comrades can afford the expensive treatments, but as far as the normal people are concerned, we are worrying about feeding our starving children and COULD NOT EVER DREAM of having a few minutes to breathe as our therapy. Having horses for the therapy? Maybe we can get this in HEAVEN!
And for you Mrs. Romney, Heaven is here and now on this earth, deriving from your offshores and Swiss bank accounts!!!

Yes, you do work, for yourself, your family! Please DO NOT compare yourself with us, because you DO NOT ever have to worry about getting the next meal for your army, your children. You just sit home and the money will come in for you and yours! I like to take care of an army of children, if I have billions of dollars coming in and NOT ever have to worry about feeding them!

She should be ashame. She knows she does not cook. Should have brought her cook with her and stop trying to act as if she can relate to ordinary women.

Ann Romney never baked or cooked in her whole life. That's what her hired help does. She didn't know what she was doing, that's why it burned.

More like "American's Welsh Cake Emergency."

If you think that a major network reporting on this as the highest priority political story of the cycle isn't indicative of a serious emergency in terms of America's political culture and national priorities, then you are a total vegetable and deserve the turd sammich you're being served by the gov't, the MSM and our political systems.

I don't understand. If she was standing in the kitchen, and the cakes were burning, why didn't she turn them down? Why announce that somebody needs to turn the heat down? Were her arms broken?

I'd like to see more stories about the Benghazi cover up. Apparently the Mohamad video was a bogus cover story for the recent 9/11 attack on our embassy. Thanks CNN
