(CNN) - Vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan will "focus on substance" on Thursday evening in his debate face-off against Vice President Joe Biden, a senior adviser to Mitt Romney's campaign told CNN.
In seeking to set expectations for the GOP candidate, the adviser said the high-profile debate stage is "certainly a new environment for him."

"Biden has so much more experience debating in the Senate, during his two presidential campaigns and then again during the 2008 (general election) campaign," the adviser said. "Ryan is looking to focus on substance, which voters seemed to like about the Denver debate, and continue to drive the message about there being a clear choice between the status quo of Obama-Biden and charting a new course with Romney-Ryan."
The Romney campaign could be suggesting Ryan will steer clear from memorable one-liners - "zingers" - as Romney did in the first debate.
Top Democrats on Thursday predicted the competition would be scrappy but collegial.
Romney and President Barack Obama met just over a week ago for their first of three debate sessions. Romney was widely credited with having a significantly more successful debate than Obama.
Thursday is the only debate between Ryan and Biden. Romney and Obama go head-to-head next on Tuesday in the second presidential debate.

Campaign to Biden: "If they try to talk about Obama's record, call Ryan a liar."
Speaking of substance, where is the CNN coverage of the State Department hearings about the Libya tragedy and the White House cover-up?? The families of the victims are pleading for the truth. This is shameful, and a crime. All involved in the Obama administration owe answers to these families and the American people. Our national security is at risk.
Alfalfa(lyin)Ryan will get killed tonight. I voted to move America FORWARD today. Mitt the twit is not qualified to be President.
How can people want Joe the Racist to stay in office? Biden's racist comments are so awful that they can't be repeated on this board because they would violate CNN's Rules of Conduct.
It should be interesting to hear what Ryan considers substance. I guess most things are substance. The question of how much a good substance they are.
Substance? From radical Ryan? OH PLEASE--the guy proves himself a goof-ball everytime a reporter asks him a question.
The only thing this thread proves...is that the real liars in the world are Liberals....Liberals are anti-truth, Anti-God, Anti-Country, Anti-Security, Anti-Life, Anti-Freedom.....if America really wanted to free itself from Tyranny..it would drive the left in this country into the SEA!!!!

Two years of non-stop TeaParty coverage boils down to tonight's debate ... yes, CNN? Y'all got your TeaParty candidate ... well what GOPers think of as Tea, because what Ryan really accomplished in his decade of Republican fiscal "service" to his party is anything but fiscal ... fact is, he's more responsible for our economic decline in 2007-2008 than most ... having voted for every unpaid program Bush put out as unfunded yet necessary ... but I digress. Confusing, isn't it? To have spent two years courting a "party" that never actually existed but was always just part of everyday Republican BS: talk the talk ... but not walk the walk. Which begs the question: who actually where those folks CNN courted for two years and helped vote in during the 2010 election .... ?
No wonder Candy Crowley is on record as stating this debate makes her want to "vomit". I can understand why. TeaPers aren't exactly "nice" when it comes to their opinions and she can already feel the blow-back coming her way before she asks her first question.
That's just it we have waken up. We realize after researching that the republicans don't know much about the economy. There record does not lie at all. It's proven that Dems have created more jobs including a surplus. Can't say that for your right side buddies can you. You need to WAKE UP and tell your righty buddies to do there homework. Talk is cheap. Action speaks louder then words.
One does not need to an economist to understand which direction is America heading, just look at Government budget, 24% Defense_Healthcare 22%_Pensions 22%_Welfare 12%_ and only 3% for Education? some Government like to keep control over the public by restricting how much they learn, you draw your own conclusions.

my comments are short you just don't like the truth hi Benasi how are you
Exactly which message will Mr. Ryan bring to the debate. Mr. Romney seems to have more than one plan for America. His answers seem to change from audience to audience. Will Mr. Ryan stick to the platform, bring all of Mr. Romney's plans to the table or use his own ideas?
The hype is ridiculous. The constant polling is ridiculous. This campaign is lasting far too long.
