(CNN) - President Barack Obama called Vice President Joe Biden shortly after Thursday's vice presidential debate, and told reporters that he "could not be prouder" of his running mate.
"I'm going to make a special point of saying I thought Joe Biden was terrific," he told reporters after Air Force One landed near Washington. "I could not be prouder of him. I thought he made a very strong case. And you know I really think that his passion for making sure that the economy grows for the middle class came through so I'm really proud of him."

It is highly unusual for Obama to approach reporters in this fashion after deplaning.
Obama also posted a tweet to his official Twitter feed after the debate.
"Tonight proved once again that you won't find a better and more tireless advocate for the middle class than @JoeBiden. -bo #TeamJoe," he wrote.
Obama was to watch at least part of the debate while flying back from Florida, where he held an earlier campaign fundraiser in Miami.

I hope people will really do their research. Research the real differences between these four men. Research their experience. Research their beliefs, their families, their past. Research their leadership experience. We are HIRING a president.
And I hope they were watching. Biden was rude, interrupting over and over again the real substance that Ryan was trying to share. I hope Americans are strong enough and wise enough to do their research and hire the right guy for the job. Anyone who says Biden did better had their rose colored glasses on.

Joe Biden showed a creepy mix of anger and looniness. He tried much too hard to make up for Obama's loss. It was difficult to listen to all of the screaming.
Biden had no tact or respect. Being our current VP, this is unacceptable. Would you praise your boss for acting this way? Yes, Biden is an "old pro", but has had this seat for 4 years. Ryan presented more plans and facts than Biden did by far. Biden only has his and Obama's proof that nothing he said tonight works.

● 48% of voters say Paul Ryan won
● 44% of voters say Joe Biden won
● 8% voters say they're unsure who won the debate, but they are sure that Joe Biden is a weasel
