Romney: Biden 'doubling down on denial'

Richmond, Virginia (CNN) - Mitt Romney accused Vice President Joe Biden of "doubling down on denial" as details continued to trickle out about the Benghazi attacks that killed four Americans last month.

It was the second time in as many days that Romney sharply criticized the Obama administration for its posture in the aftermath of the attack.

At an outdoor rally in Richmond, Romney said Biden had raised more questions about the administration's handling of the deadly incident when he "directly contradicted the testimony of State Department officials," during the vice presidential debate Thursday night.

"He's doubling down on denial. And we need to understand exactly what happened as opposed to just having people brush this aside," Romney said. "When the vice president of the United States directly contradicts the testimony, sworn testimony, of state department officials, American citizens have a right to know just what's going on."

On Thursday night, Biden told the debate moderator "we did not know" about requests for more security in the months before the attack on the United States' consulate in Benghazi.

"We weren't told they wanted more security there," Biden said when pressed during the debate. "We did not know they wanted more security again."

Republicans pounced, citing congressional testimony from State Department officials about requests for more security staffing in Libya.

On Friday White House spokesman Jay Carney clarified Biden's comments, saying the vice president had been referring to himself, the president and the White House, not the broader administration.

Carney said the requests for additional security in Libya had been handled by the State Department and had not reached the White House.

Romney had criticized the president a day earlier, after Obama's deputy campaign manager accused the Republican ticket of trying to politicize the Libya attacks.

"It's an issue because this is the first time in 33 years that a United States ambassador has been assassinated," Romney said. "Mr. President, this is an issue because we were attacked successfully by terrorists on the anniversary of 9/11. President Obama, this is an issue because Americans wonder why it was it took so long for you and your administration to admit that this was a terrorist attack."

"This is a very serious issue," Romney continued. "These are very serious questions, and the American people deserve serious answers and I hope they come soon."

    Darnell:

This is not really important. What is really important is where is all of Romney's tax returns??? Why does Ryan lie 24 hours a day (nights too)?

Doesn't matter if four innocent people died as long as we get answers to those burning questions.
I guess my old man was correct years ago when he said "some people talk just to hear their brains rattle"

The obama administration lied about what happened in Libya for weeks. They kept running with the youtube story, which got more countries in the middle east upset with us. Even when they knew for a FACT that it was a terrorist attack, they still said no it was a protect gone bad.

Neither won the debate. Biden was a clown, smirking, laughing and throwing his hands around. No real substance. Ryan tried to remain calm and on-point but had little detail. I call it a draw with America losing.

This cover up is worse than both Watergate and Iran-Contra combined. In the words of A. Lincoln "You can fool some of the people some of the time, but not all of the people all of the time."

IN the words of Obama's Pastor and Mentor, "The chickens are coming home to roost"

Lybia is just another example of the poor political skills inside the Obama adminstrations.
Here was a perfact chance for the American people to ralliy around their President, as they have done so many other times in attacks on America. But NOOOO, the Obamantes could only think about Obama's poll numbers and the negative impact the attack might have on them. And the OMedia team followed it up like lap poodles.
    What political fools..

"Where is this information in this 'fair and balanced' article?"

I'm sorry, but CNN's management and editors are busy drooling over the prospect of getting a massive tax cut and 0% capital gains rates while counting the Crossroads ad revenue. Please call back later.

Hi everyone. I would like to humbly submit the following piece of reasoning that I have not heard yet, but that I think could be spread around, to great effect.

Dear Mr. President: Your opponents are supposedly short on specifics and flawed in vision. If that is true, and they are running fairly even as an alternative, what does that say about you? If you have such a great argument to make, why aren't you cleaning their clocks?

I wish Biden would have been more honest in his facts. Seniors need to know that Obama's healthcare plan takes away funding for Medicare recipients. Most of the money is being used to expand health care coverage outside of Medicare. Biden was also inaccurate when he said he didn't support the middle east wars–he voted in favor of funding them. Ryan won the VP debate–cool, calm and knowledgable.

Mssrs Obama & Biden your deniability that it wasn't your job know whether our men and women on the ground needed additional support is not your job or concern must be very comforting the men and women who have died overseas and those presently serving their country. It must be the State Department's role? The department of state is under which branch of government? Executive, I believe. Who does the secretary of state report to? You, Mr. Obama! interesting Now the question is who do you report to, and let me remind you that you work for the people of the United States of America to serve and protect as a Civil Servant, so use innocent deniability with another group of people. I feel sorry for the families who lost family as a result of big government that can't make quick decisions in war!

This is a case of obama not attending daily briefings (his job) in order to stay informed but instead preferring to appear on some goofy tv show rather than meet with leaders or go to the briefings. He is a pathetic excuse for a president and has to go.

This Libya issue is nothing but political by republicans who are grasping at straws anymore. Hmm, now let me see, what was the biggest failure from the GOP, oh yeah, 9/11 and their WMD claim to go to Iraq.

I still would like to know where are those "WMD's. Think people, think. And you want to down grade education? I guess it doesn't matter because you hate Obama even more. "STUPID"

Yes Romney this is a serious issue. I guess Mr. Romney doesn't understand that sometimes it is prudent to gather the facts. Oh I forgot, Romney does not care about the facts. He just makes things up as he goes along. He has to have something to talk about on the stump since the murdered Seal's mother asked that he quit politicizing her son's death and he has no factual plans of his own. Romney=Pathetic

Som what does Romney propose? Running a police state? Everyone knows that adding more security gaurds would not have solved the problem or stopped that attack, just like 9/11 could not be stopped even though lot of was known about it and the events leading up to it. Therefore, Romney should think about these issues again before making them a political issue. Either he should accept that 9/11 was caused by the republicans and the republican President who knew it would happen or stop this line of attack. THe administration communicated what they knew and when they knew it. To second guess them on the decisions they made is silly and playing the "Monday night quarter back" which not good for Romney and the USA.

Besides, no POTUS would like to have his Ambassador killed in a foriegn country and will do what is needed to safa-gaurd the situation, as was done in this case; however, due the intelligence failure (an not the lack of security gaurds), this bad incidence did happen in Benghazi. Now, we need to get to the bottom of it to make sure that it does not happen again.

A FULL MONTH after an attack on our Embassy in Libya, in which our Ambassador and his staff are brutalized, tortured and then killed, but Biden and Obama still don't know that the Ambassador's requests for additional security were turned down? Our Ambassador and his staff are dead BECAUSE additional SECURITY requests were turned down. Millions of Americans are aware of this fact but NOT Biden and Obama. Being clueless is not a leadership trait.

Sure Mete. And when he was told it happened, he jumped on a plane to Nevada for a campaign stop and pick up a check there. Yes, Obama cares oooooh so deeply.
