In Ohio, Romney, Ryan cast Obama as soft on China

Youngstown, Ohio (CNN) - Republican running mates Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan sought to cast the current administration as soft on China on Saturday, blaming Democratic President Barack Obama for skipping another opportunity to label China a currency manipulator.

"Over the past several years, the president's failed to call China a currency manipulator," Romney said at a rally in Portsmouth, Ohio. "He had the occasion on Friday to come out with that official designation. Do you know what they said? We're not going to make any determination until after the election."

"Let me tell you, on day one of my administration I will label China a currency manipulator, we gotta get those jobs back and get trade to be fair," he continued.

The comments from the Republican candidates come a day after the Treasury Department announced it will hold off publishing a twice-yearly report on foreign exchange, due October 15, that often contains criticism of China's currency policies.

"The administration had their eighth chance to label China a currency manipulator," Ryan said at a separate event nearly 300 miles away from Romney, in Youngstown. "That's eight opportunities to say, 'You know what, play fair with us, trade with us fairly.'"

According to the U.S. Treasury, the report will be released after global finance officials from the G-20 leading economies meet in early November.

"We've lost hundreds of thousands of jobs, according to one study, because of just this problem. Two million jobs we've lost, according to the International Trade Commission, because of one country, China, taking our intellectual property rights, meaning taking our patents, taking our goods that we make and copying them and selling them. That's not correct. That's not right. That's cheating," Ryan said in his opening remarks at a town hall meeting in this battleground state.

Ryan misstated data from the U.S. International Trade Commission report. The 2011 report does not assign a number of lost jobs to currency manipulation by China but asserts that the tightening of intellectual property rights could lead to the creation of 2 million jobs in the United States.

The presidential campaigns have accused one another of being weak on China and both candidates have included misleading or disputed information in their television ads on the subject.

Speaking in the hard-hit manufacturing area of Ohio's Mahoning Valley, Ryan emphasized the need to increase manufacturing jobs in order to build a stronger middle class.

Nearly 300 miles southwest of Ryan, Romney said currency manipulation means "that American companies that are making these same products, they go out of business if the Chinese products are so much cheaper than the real costs behind them."

Ryan stressed the need to hold China accountable for its artificially undervalued exchange rate, a practice that negatively affects American producers.

"We are going to stop this kind of cheating from occurring," Ryan said at Youngstown State University. "That's a big deal. That takes our jobs. You have to stand up for the American manufacturing system. Giving good speeches, you know, saying the right thing, that sounds good, but getting it done is what matters."

I would like to know why hardly anyone, especially women, are not looking at what the truth is about what Romney's/Ryan's plans are for taxes, social security, medicare, and healthcare? If you can't look at independent fact checkers, and I do mean "independent"..............then go online and see actual speeches, papers, etc., etc., from these two men and you will see that unless you are very wealthy, they do not care about you or your children or future grandchildren. Why would any woman want to vote for these two idiots who will do nothing but let the wealthy get even wealthier and if you think they are going to keep "pre-existing" conditions for any healthcare plan..........you live on some sort of "fantasy" island. They have absolutely no plan whatsoever to help create jobs, they will do away with medicare and social security. You can bet your kids on this one!! Before you think I am a Democrat, me and my family are registerd Republicans, but we are smart and can read between the lines and have joined the hundreds of Republicans who will vote for Obama/Biden!! If you care about your children, future grandchildren, and yourselves, you will be wise to vote for Obama/Biden, too.

Obama would not dare call China or Russia the enemy, but he has called every American who doesn't support him the enemy and that he would like to punish his so called enemies. (Obama on Univision fall of 2010)

Maybe we need to tell Obama that the reds are actually Republicans. Wait that's not a good idea, the nukes would go flying.

Obama has filed twice as many trade complaints against China than his predecessor. Romney is just so full of it. I'm sick of this guy and the entire GOP machine of misinformation.

Moving manufacturing out of the country is nothing new as when I was going to college over 30 years ago we were told America was on its way to become a service society and manufacturing would be moving out . Sure the government could get tough on China ! "The people we borrow money from" . Does that mean we don't need to get tough on Mexico and the new China possibly being places like Egypt that will take our jobs next ? I did hear mr Romney on T.V. said what Egypt needs is jobs like we have in America to fix their economy . I look at it as our jobs going to Egypt next . I found many products today in America are in fact now being made in Egypt .

China only owns 6% of our deficit. A revamped tax code will alleviate any problem anyone has with borrowing from China. Enough with the lies. We own most of our debt. Look it up. Stop listening to rhetoric on CNN, MSN, etc. Do some homework people.

At this very second Bain is outsourcing a company to China...What this joke about Romney being tough on China? You've got to be kidding. Romney will defend and give tax breaks for companies that have their operations in other countries...Wake the heck up Republicans..Geez

Does anyone believe this malarkey? Joe Biden is right but did not have to convince me that these two clowns are boldfaced liars through and through. The man who made his money killing a million American jobs and would have gladly killed a million more has the unmitigated gall to label someone else as soft on China? If he wants to see soft on China, he should look in the mirror.

That's rich, Mr. Romney! What about the plant in Freeport. IL Mr. Romney? Bain bought them out and is sending 170 jobs to China? Of course, you can't do anything about that. You only hold up that mantle when it works in your favor and is convenient. You are nothing more than a paper suit!

There are powerful opponents of labeling China a currency manipulator, including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The chamber and other groups note that China has made significant adjustments to its currency in recent years and they say labeling the country a manipulator could open a trade war with China, harming U.S. businesses and workers.

This is hilarious given that it was GW Bush who through open the flood gates and free trade with China. he doggedly pursued giving them most favored nation status even before he was in the White House.

Romney's statements about China are absolutely FANTASTIC and LONG OVERDUE!! If people want to know what is one of the major things wrong with the American economy, Romney has hit the nail right on the head. For this alone he deserves to be President, because Obama has said exactly NOTHING about this problem. China is stealing millions of jobs from the US and other countries, because it has a vast labor pool of cheap slave labor. A few hundred Chinese Communist Party members are exploiting this fact and becoming billionaires as a result.

Why would people want to believe that Romney/Ryan supposedly wants to stop jobs going to China when in fact Romney has sent jobs and he is earning money from that. The Republicans keep saying they are going to create jobs when in 2010 the Republicans promised you for their vote that they would create jobs – so where are the job, it never happened. And Romney says he will stop jobs being sent to China on his first day in office, when and if that day does come – it will be so long because of all the stuff that he has promised to do on that so called first day.

In the debate, Paul Ryan said that he would only allow abortion in cases of rape, incest or danger to mother's health. This is completely illogical and inconsistent. This statement implies that a baby conceived through rape or incest is of lesser value as a human being than a baby conceived normally and, as a result, can be aborted. A baby is a baby is a baby, no matter how he is conceived and therefore no abortion is permitted unless the mother's life is in danger.

"Over the past several years, the president's failed to call China a currency manipulator.

Sorry Mitt , all countries manipulate there currency . We did it for years . As for you now tough guy stance , you sent jobs overseas for ears.

I'm starting to dislike Romney more and more , his shotgun accusations , blaming Obama for everything .Then spinning his lies to whatever he feels is politicly in his best entrust . Romney has not once mentioned the GW Bush name.

To think America has such a looser so close to being elected is frightening .

This guy amazes me. He outsource to us. And then he wants to get tough on us. Get real America. It is not Obama who is the problem it is you who want cheap products. And the big companies that makes the product that is your problem. When you have APPLE making their product in our country and is the biggest money maker in the USA..who should u blame? Yes that is 200,000 jobs that you allow. When you let the steel product make in our country, you gave us 1.5 million jobs..should I go on....So keep blaming OBAMA...when you should be blaming all before him.You take 2 trillion and finance two war and now you want to fix it overnight..Please vote for Romney because he will make us richer and your businessmen richer...From China with love.
