(CNN) – After criticizing chat program "The View" on a secretly recorded video, and subsequently agreeing to come on the show, Mitt Romney has cancelled his upcoming appearance citing scheduling conflicts.
Barbara Walters, the show's creator and co-host, announced the news Monday.

"Gov. Romney was supposed to be on with us this Thursday with Ann Romney," she said. "We were looking forward to it. Over the weekend, his people said that he had scheduling problems and would not be coming on with us. Nor at this point did he feel that he could reschedule. We are happy to have Mrs. Romney on with us. We are sorry that we won't have Gov. Romney."
She left the invitation open, however, saying "he can change his mind and we hope he does. It would be our pleasure to have him on the program."
Amanda Henneberg, a Romney campaign spokeswoman, said the GOP nominee's appearance "was no longer going to work in the campaign schedule, but Mrs. Romney is very excited to join the ladies of The View."
At a surreptitiously recorded campaign fund-raiser in May, Romney called the ABC morning talk show "high risk," pointing to the political affiliations of the co-hosts. Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar and Sherri Shepherd have all expressed decidedly liberal standpoints, though Elisabeth Hasselbeck is an outspoken conservative.
"'The View' is high risk because of the five women on it. The other four are sharp tongued and not conservative, Whoopi Goldberg in particular," Romney told donors in Boca Raton, Florida earlier in the summer, adding "Although the last time I was on the show, she said to me, 'You know what? I think I could vote for you.' And I said, 'I must have done something really wrong.'"
Soon after the release of the video Hasselbeck announced on the show that Romney had agreed to appear on "The View" couch in October. Romney's previous appearance on "The View" was in 2010.
Romney also said in the video he's also staying away from the comedy show "Saturday Night Live" "because you want to show that you are fun and you're a good person, but you also want to appear presidential."

Hmmm....how do you go on a show by and for women, if your policy is to control, discount, and marginalize them?
Mitt Phony doesn't want to talk about women issues. We all know where he stand on that!
I guess romney hates woman just like everybody says ,vote Obama instead ,a real man!!!!!
Ha ha ha... You're a hypocrite anyway Mitt. You might as well follow your word for a change and take the criticism from the right.... (Oh... That's right.. There won't BE any, because they're all hypocrites, too...)
And Romney is running for President? He doesn't want meet with kids on Nic and now doesn't want to be on The View, on television. Behind closed doors he writes off almost half the nation. Romney seems to be afraid of variability.
God...this guy is a phony.....what a lying hypocritical panderer!!!!!!
Scary cat.....i guess him being for 100% of americans only applies to those who supports his views? Must have been told he's too close to the election to put another foot in his word for his to try to remove it.
I think it is a huge mistake for any elected official to validate that show as if it is somehow relavent. President Hollywood diminished the presidency by appearing on that ridiculous show.
If Mitt Romney can't handle "The View", how can he handle actual enemies?
Romney is running away from the View with go reasons, they may ask him a question that he will flip flop on, again
Run fast Romney!
Mitt the twit running from America again. He can run,but he can't hide.
Good for him. Obama has been on more entertainment shows than he has attended intel briefings. Finally, someone who will not only be a wonderful president – but also act like one!
If Mr Romney can't take on the View, and how can he take on the Iran and, if the terrorists, and even our allies. I have What a simple, a pathetic bag of lies
Mr. Romney has made it clear over and over again that he will not meet with more liberal members of the press or show hosts. When a candidate is not available to all media then that is a red flag. This country is not made up of all conservatives, all liberals, or all moderates. If you are running for a political office that represents all of the people you should be available to all the people.
The problem seems to be that Mr. Romney has changed his mind on so many issues that he has two or three versions of these issues. He probably would not want to be reminded of this now that he believes he is riding high. Unfortunately, we are not doing a very good job of getting him to reconcile these changes nor are we asking him about them. We seem to be letting him get by = not a good idea. He could change on us again causing some financial hardships, changing our medical insurance coverage, changing eligibility for various programs, etc.
Shroter Romney: " I have no idea hwo to handle myself in a situation in which women I look down on as inferior to me are allowed to eschew their proper subservient roles and actually disagree with and challenge me."
Romney is afraid of intelligent women that will not bow down and kiss his ring.
Romney told donors in Boca Raton, Florida earlier in the summer, adding "Although the last time I was on the show, she said to me, 'You know what? I think I could vote for you.' And I said, 'I must have done something really wrong.'"
It's not very politic to insult your host(s), even in a joking manner. That comment, plus his Olympic faux pas, clearly illustrates Mr. Romney's proclivity for foot-in-mouth disease.
So he sends his wife by herself to defend him! Loser
A loaded agenda at best.. let the ladies spew on something vapid and they better play nice witrh Ann Romney
ALL those women on 'The View' give me one big massive headache and the migraine come on when they had Obama on the show.
You see whatever he said on the 47% video is true because he was claimed afraid to appear on the view on the video therefore it not a surprise. Even though he back tracked the 47% comment people should know that that is his true believe. Romney is not every men and women’s man he has certain soft spot for the Mormon Church, Marriott Hotel, corporations and the milliners and billionaires in his club. That is he wished for to become the president. In his world the rest of us we don’t exist.
@CBG When a candidate is not available to all media then that is a red flag.
I agree, lets schedule some time for President Obama with Fox, followed by a news conference with all reporters to go over the Libyan attack.
Wimp much?
Heck do you blame him... 2008 McCain went to that show and was asked at one point by Woopie if she should worry he was going to make her a slave again... This is the bias crap you get at that kind of show.. they will all fall on their knees for obama over there, but bring on a republican and those harpies will pull out the pitch forks...
No The View, no Nickelodeon. I guess this leaves Romney Augusta as an all-male campaign stop. Oh wait, they entered modern times this summer.
