Romney not taking in 'The View'

(CNN) – After criticizing chat program "The View" on a secretly recorded video, and subsequently agreeing to come on the show, Mitt Romney has cancelled his upcoming appearance citing scheduling conflicts.

Barbara Walters, the show's creator and co-host, announced the news Monday.

"Gov. Romney was supposed to be on with us this Thursday with Ann Romney," she said. "We were looking forward to it. Over the weekend, his people said that he had scheduling problems and would not be coming on with us. Nor at this point did he feel that he could reschedule. We are happy to have Mrs. Romney on with us. We are sorry that we won't have Gov. Romney."

She left the invitation open, however, saying "he can change his mind and we hope he does. It would be our pleasure to have him on the program."

Amanda Henneberg, a Romney campaign spokeswoman, said the GOP nominee's appearance "was no longer going to work in the campaign schedule, but Mrs. Romney is very excited to join the ladies of The View."

At a surreptitiously recorded campaign fund-raiser in May, Romney called the ABC morning talk show "high risk," pointing to the political affiliations of the co-hosts. Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar and Sherri Shepherd have all expressed decidedly liberal standpoints, though Elisabeth Hasselbeck is an outspoken conservative.

"'The View' is high risk because of the five women on it. The other four are sharp tongued and not conservative, Whoopi Goldberg in particular," Romney told donors in Boca Raton, Florida earlier in the summer, adding "Although the last time I was on the show, she said to me, 'You know what? I think I could vote for you.' And I said, 'I must have done something really wrong.'"

Soon after the release of the video Hasselbeck announced on the show that Romney had agreed to appear on "The View" couch in October. Romney's previous appearance on "The View" was in 2010.

Romney also said in the video he's also staying away from the comedy show "Saturday Night Live" "because you want to show that you are fun and you're a good person, but you also want to appear presidential."

This is too funny! Mitt wants to be Commander In Chief but is afraid of the women on The View. He'll send Ann who will refuse to comment on any women's issues and bore us with what a great guy her hubby is, how he buys groceries, shops at Costco, and how hard it was when they had to eat off their ironing board.

Good for him, why should he go on the hen club show. Listen to a bunch of liberals, that are past their prime whining and crying, all they do is gossip not one of them has a brain.

The View isn't a news show. It's often parodied and frequently mocked on The Soup. It has as much respect as shows like The Bachelor and Jersey Shore. For a President of the United States to appear on that show is to dumb down the office and, by association, the nation. Romney, unlike President Hollywood, made a good call.

Seems MItt likes to send in Ann when things get tough. Wonder if she will be the one dealing with Iran if he (I doubt this one very much) wins the election. Good to know he has such a stellar place holder for him. And, remind me again, just what are Ann's credentials?

I guess since the race is getting tighter & tighter, to the point it's neck & neck – and the last poll that I saw is where Romney is ahead – So I guess he doesn't need the "View" & doesn't have to be on all those other shows, such as late night & etc. Sounds like Romney has it in the "bag" so to speak.

It is obvious that 95% of Hollywood is in the bag for Obama. They are afraid that their message of sex, drug use, adultery, homosexuality, etc, will be blunted by a Romney presidency.

Romney would have to be an idiot to go on the View or on Letterman. They would just trash him and make fun of him. Perhaps he needs to place a bet with the President: you go on the air with Hannity or Limbaugh and I will go on the View.

He's way too chicken to face a squad of women who will hold him to the truth, especially his stance on women. He can say all he wants that he wouldn't change abortion legislation when we know full well that he'd jump on the chance to appoint the most conservative leaning justices who would make that happen for him. You'd have to be crazy to vote for Romney and that's just one issue.

No reason to go there. The Democrats on that show are simply closed minded. They refuse to even LISTEN to another viewpoint. I don't even understand why people watch that show at all.

As it is reported on Washington post Romney campaign only stay's in Marriott Hotel branches and Marriott hotel benefited from the Romney Presidential campaign in a way Romney is channeling his campaign contribution to Marriott which he may hold a share. Isn't that an example of conflict of interest? You can say he is smart because he conning the tea baggers to get richer while running for the office

Thank you for highlighting just how out of touch you are with what women in America think.

You can certainly be presidential and be on the View! The View reaches a lot of women who have an lot of different views on politics, the economy, etc. Mitt Romney will not go on shows that don't favor his opinions and policies! President Obama have appeared on Fox News several times to sit down in the hot seat. He sends Ann to do all his talking to women, but would like women to support him. If this man can't even take the time to talk directly to women, then why in the hell would any woman want to vote for this time?

Not wanting to waste your time is not the same as being afraid. This is an exremely close election and every minute that he spends on a show that will gain him 0 voters is a comnplete waste of time. A president should not spend time on frivilous talk shows. Running the US is s full time job and one that the current "President" is not at all taking serious....God Job Mitt, don't waste your time with 4 old crows.

He made a commitment to be on their show months ago, and decided to cancel a few days before. But I would not expect you to understand integrity.

You two are just a couple of womanizers if the only way you can describe professional women is as "vapid" or "gave me a headache". Do you chain your wives to the Stove/Bedpost during the Day/Night?

Key word: appear. All Willard wants to do is APPEAR presidential and he'll get your vote. Once in the Oval Office, he has no intentions nor would he care about the actual job. As usual, he slipped up and admitted it is just a game of ego and not of love for THIS country.

No doubt that when Mr. Romney speaks, he usually hurts his case (or he lies, sometimes the same thing), yet turning down the opportunity to try to sort out his plummeting standing with women (53% of Americans) would seem to be a mistake.

Willard thinks he's on a winning streak now and feels the women of The View would slow that down real fast, by asking for specifics on womens issues and he just can't have that running a non specifics campaign.

    Obama/Biden for true leadership.

I do not recall one single time that the president ever appeared on Fox. He is the worste about staying away from people who do not agree with him. he doesn't even have a single cabinet member who is willing to question hois decisions. that is what he did so poorly on the first debate. when you suround yourself with "yes-men' you do not know how to react what someone inteligently dissagrees with you.

Obama has appeared on Fox on O'Reily's show where the big mouth barely let our President finish a sentence, he was so intent on feeding his garbage to his loyal viewers. Reminds me of Joe Wilson shouting "Liar" at the State of the Union. Republicans, from day one, give OUR President NO respect and yet President Obama has conducted himself with truth and grace. Mitt thinks as long as he "looks presidential" and talks the talk, he'll get elected and it might almost work. But I pray to God everyday it doesn't. And if women do not think a Mitt presidency will affect their everyday lives, then they haven't been paying attention.
