Romney takes in $170 million during September, falls short of Obama

(CNN) - Mitt Romney's campaign, along with the Republican National Committee, raised $170 million in September, the campaign announced Monday.

The number comes more than a week after President Barack Obama's team said they raised a record $181 million for the president's re-election effort in the same month.

Romney's campaign said it finished the month with $191 million in the bank. Ninety-three percent of all donations were $250 or less, amounting to $43.15 million of the September haul, the campaign added.

"President Obama has demonstrated that he can't defend his record of four years of failure," RNC Chairman Reince Priebus said in a statement. "Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan have a much different vision than President Obama's policies of larger government, a stagnant economy, and more government dependence.

In August, the collective effort known as the Romney Victory Fund, which also includes state parties, raised $112 million. In the two months prior, the team raised just over $100 million each month.

Romney officially accepted his party's nomination on August 30 in a speech that concluded the Republican National Convention. September kicked off with the Democratic National Convention, a week full of prime time speeches targeting GOP policies while also bolstering the president's re-election effort.

The GOP nominee's numbers come in spite of what many political observers noted as a difficult month of September for Romney. The candidate faced negative headlines after video emerged of the Republican making controversial remarks at a private fund-raiser in May. In his comments, Romney argued half the country was dependent on government and viewed themselves as victims. They story dominated the news cycle for much of the week.

Romney's $170 million haul came in before Romney's widely proclaimed win in the first presidential debate, which essentially changed the tone in the campaign. Campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul tweeted Monday afternoon that the campaign raised more than $27 million online in the first two weeks of October–its best online month so far, she wrote.

Not a problem!! Obama's performance in the first debate rendered hundreds of millions of dollars spent on his smear attack ads WASTED MONEY. The empty suit was truly priceless.

Maybe i'm not calculating my numbers right, but 93% of 170 million is not 43.15 million.

I've donated to the Obama campaign and plan to donate again, as well as volunteer. Besides appreciating everything the Obama administration has done for our country over the last 3+ years, two words remind me of how important this election is to all of us:

The Republicans left this country in an econmic mess, started two wars and gave away trillions in tax breaks to the super wealthy. Now the Republicans want the keys to the white house. They want to blame Obama for not cleaning up their mess fast enough.

We don't give a crap. We want Willard to explain why he has his money in foreign tax havens. Why does he invest in Chinese companies(CNOOC) that clearly are working against the interest of the U.S.? These are legitimate questions that need to be answered. Any media outlet that doesn't question him about these CREDIBLE issues, can't call themselves credible.

Romney and Ryan's "vision" must be a mirage. No one has ever actually seen what it looks like and the refuse to describe it.

The difference is ok, since Romney basically killed $150 million of false advertising from the President from debate #1. Expect the President to lose another $180 million in the second debate. It's what the smart peopl refer to as throwing good money after bad.

So, does the media expect us to believe that one month's $11M difference is supposed to determine the election? No thanks. I'll be basing my opinion on who is better/worse for the country. And one guy has 4 years of failure working against him already.

"Guess those "buying the election" complaints will have to be dropped quietly..."

Really? And where does this article talk about the massive advantage Mittens and the GOP have in terms of the rich and their corporations giving hundreds of millions to their PACs?

American news media is a sham, pitiful and misleading! They prop us this pretender Robme and Lyin Ryan to look presidential; after Americans have heard and seen via video flip-flop, misrepresentation, lies, distortions, misleading and baselee accusations, even looking stupid like a stooge overseas! I cannot see this man Robme representing America, he has no allegiance to Americans "JUST MONEY" AND GREED! The only way Americans know that truth has come forth from Robme's mouth, is for a UNDERCOVER VIDEO TO SURFACE!

So it appears Obama is right on course to spend $1 BILLION on his campaign to sell four years of failure and division as "Hope & Change" and now "Forward". Forward to WHAT?! Four more years of record unemployment, record defcitis, record debt, further downgrades to the country's credit rating, millions more on food stamps, $6/gallon gasoline, sky rocketing food prices and the destruction of the healthcare system by Obamacare??? Romney needs to state this tomorrow night. Obama is talking about Forward OVER THE CLIFF. Wake up America before it is too late.
