Romney campaign: Ask about Benghazi tonight

Hempstead, NY (CNN) - If asked about it at tonight's second presidential debate, Mitt Romney will offer his take on Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's attempt to accept responsibility for the attack on the U.S consulate in Libya, campaign officials to the GOP nominee tell CNN.

On an official trip to Lima, Peru, Clinton accepted blame for the diplomatic assault that led to the deaths of four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens.

"I take responsibility," Clinton told CNN Foreign Affairs reporter Elise Labott.

Asked what Romney would say about Clinton's comments, an adviser to the former Massachusetts governor declined to offer specifics.

"Stay tuned on what he will say," the official said.

In the hours running up to the debate, Romney campaign officials gave President Barack Obama the advantage in the evening's town hall format.

However, those aides noted Romney has held well over 100 town hall events during the course of his second presidential run.

Romney will talk about the economy "every chance he gets," one campaign official said.

The campaign's advisers also stressed what they described as Romney's "record of bipartisanship," governing Massachusetts as a "conservative" while working with a Democratic-controlled legislature.

In response to the Libya security criticism, the Obama campaign is accusing Romney of seeking to politicize the deaths of American diplomats.

"Romney's criticized the President, but given his track record of taking both sides on every major foreign policy issue- including U.S. intervention in Libya – the impetus is on him to say what he'd do differently," the Obama campaign official said.

Typical Affirmative Action at its finest. Blame Hillary, blame intelligence community, blame Romney. When are you going to stand up and admit that you are incompetent.

I am sure Romney has already paid some of the people that are asking questions. Ask Romney why he paid women to go public about Herman Cain. Ask Romney why a Mormon believes a black person is one step above a animal but not quite human. Ask Romney why his grandfather fled to Mexico. Ask Romney if he wants to go to war with Iran. Ask Romney why he sold his investments in Iran in 2011.

President Obama said, "My number one priority is always to keep our diplomats safe, and to keep our embassies safe." But now, apparently, he's happy to hide behind Hillary Clinton's skirt. She does have experience at enabling presidential failures, doesn't she.

Obama surely didn't stand up and say the buck stops with him. He lets Hillary take the fall like the selfish, smug person he is to try and protect his re-election. Horrible. Romney will do well if he points out he has admitted when he was wrong, like the 47% comment, when Obama can never take any blame for anything. People are seeing through this guy after 4 years – finally – and he will be looking for work in January. Thankfully.

Come on now, we all know it's Bush's fault, just like everything else that obama has done NOTHING about in the last 4 years, Lying to the American public for over 2 weeks about our ambassador and staff being MURDERED due to his own lack of responsibility. Ask obama how many security briefings he's been to in the last 2 years let alone 4 years, the moron has not attend one in 18 months, so it IS HIS FAULT, if he wants to take credit for our Seals taking out Bin Laden, then he gets to take credit for allowing the Terrorists to MURDER our Ambassador!

HUmmm, the Obama admin and State Dept. could find $700k for electric car charging outlets in Vienna but could not care about security in Libya. I smell fried fish.

When the President says the Libya security was handled by the State Department Gov Romney should simply say, " congratulations for letting a woman do a man's job"

Romney and his surrogates have only engaged in character assassination whether campaigning against Gingrich or Paul or Santorum or Obama. Ultimately the election will come down to character. To quote the movie :being President is entirely about character”. The defining question will be about his tax returns. How he made his money is one thing many have criticized but how he avoided taxes is another. Supporters have tried to deflect the tax issue as class warfare. It was first brought up in the republican primaries by Romney's opponents. Huntsman is also from a privileged background, he served as Governor, he served as an ambassador, he was a businessman who actually grew a business. In short Huntsman is a wealthy man who was never attacked on how he got wealthy and how he filed his taxes. Romney however hides the years of the IRS amnesty for rich tax cheats. It is entirely consistent with the childhood bully, the draft dodging war supporter to run from felony charges for tax evasion. His returns would tell the American public that he is not a crook, his silence tells a different story.

The only reason why the GOP can even continue to exist is because the always more poorly funded system of public education in this country has left a large percentage of the population without critical thinking skills. I read these comments and see a bunch of mouthbreathers. Sorry folks, but you are all mouthbreathers. Not to say that Obama is much better in terms of policy, but he is loved around the world and beleives in social progress. I will vote strategically for Obama to keep Romney out, but wish someone would talk seriously about direct voting and campaign finance reform so that we could have some diversity of political ideas in this country. With this I will close, because I have already lost 10 IQ points just by being on this page.

Do you honestly beleive that a draft dodging coward like Romney can hold his own against the real threats in the world? He will back down from the Taliban, from the Chinese and from Cantor, Ryan and Putin all real threats to America. But you do not have to listen to me, just ask Boehner if he misses his manhood..

Romney will talk about Benghazi.. How he can dare?

Some scoundrel planned the Benghazi killing and it can be only one of the scoundrels or a scoundrelian system who wants Romney next President. At anyprice. It is not difficult to make a guess. There are many. Here and elswhere..

The inteligence services did not know? Certainly they knew. America is who pays for their murderous deeds as well as their wages..They never been replaced from the Bush era. They are the same... Immortals . A bunch of traitors..

Hercule Poirot will say that who benefits from the murder must be the murderer, directly or indirectly..

Crocodile walikng on the shore to eat America's children – this is Romney.. the cameleonic liar.

Think who benefited from 9/11. Who benefited from it? My neighbor terrorist cat?

The Obama Administration is most guilty of turning this into a political football by repeatedly insisting that the attack rose from a protest over a YouTube video. Would you not wait until you have the facts until you make an assertion like that? Yes, you would, unless you have a political agenda.

Over 3,000 Americans killed in the USA on 9-11 under George W. Bush watch, we were all patriotic and stood together, Republicans and Democrats and Bush never accomplished the killing of bin Laden. The unfortunate death of our Ambassador to Libya and others just shows how "cold blooded" and uncaring Republicans really are to use this against President Obama just because he's a "black man", there is no other reason and I've tried to avoid saying it, but it's true.
