CNN Fact Check: Romney says automatic weapons illegal

(CNN) – Responding to a question at Tuesday's presidential debate that referred to reintroducing the Clinton-era assault weapons ban that expired in 2004, Republican candidate Mitt Romney said that it was already illegal to own those kinds of guns in the United States.

The claim: "Yeah, I'm not in favor of new pieces of legislation on - on guns and taking guns away or making certain guns illegal. We, of course, don't want to have automatic weapons, and that's already illegal in this country to have automatic weapons," Romney said.

If you are not interested in owning those kinds of guns, the fact the ban expired, is easy to overlook. No one went out and blared it on the streets with a microphone, after all.

Just like the President said last night. The twit was against automatic weapons (increasing hunters fees four or more times duirng his governorship in the binder state) but now he is for it because of the nra pandering.

Here is the choice.......do you want the country to be run by a "President" who cares about the middle class = Obama, or do you want the country to be run by a "CEO Boss that bullies his staff" = Romney. Romney seems like one of those CEO Bosses that has always treated his staff crappy. His staff will be the poor and middle class. He was disrespectful in the first debate and even more so in this second debate last night. I cannot believe how he has gotton away with so many lies and distortions on these debates and on the campaign trail. Please, please, check the video tapes and independent fact checkers and what he has said on shows like 60 MInutes and you will see that he is only for the very wealthy! He is not going to help you at all. Do the math........the middle class will be paying a whole, whole lot more in taxes! Please join me and my family as we are registered Republicans voting with hundreds of other registered Republicans voting for Obama!!

If Rob-me is planning to pander to the N.R.A. he needs to learn something about weapons. Automatic weapons are legal with a permit. Sound suppression devices are also legal (w/permit) as well as night vision rifle scopes. I had to laugh when I heard Romney claim to be a "hunter". He said he "hunts various types of animals". Yeah right... I train "various types of dressage horses...". He's a pathological liar.

Only in a few states can the legally be owned but it is not easy and expensive to do so.

That's him making things up as he goes. Somehow if he says it enough it magically becomes true. But of course he doesn't favor new legislation. That would hurt him with the NRA.

Why would any candidate for any office, say that automatic weaspons should be legal to obtain? I just dont get it, and I wont vote for a guy that is for allowing this practice to continue. Good luck with your flip-floping stance Mr Romney. We all (most of us) see thru you. You are scared of the big bad NRA. If you cant handle them, how can we expect you to handle Russia, or China, or Syria, or even the bad neighborhoods across the USA with children dying everyday??

Another subject that he pretends to know all about.
Guns and the proliferation of them in our society does not seem to bother him. He only seems to worry about those who are killed in publicized shootings. Perhaps we should tell him that every person is important. One death by shooting is one death too many.

Can we fact check obamas answer on Libya?
Can we fact check obamas job plan?
Can we fact check the real unemployment numbers?
Can we fact check obamas claim about creating 5 million jobs during his administration?

Romney's statement was incomplete - but hardly an attempt to mislead anyone. There are two types of automatic firearms.

FULLY automatic weapons are normally illegal. SEMI-Automatic weapons are not and to outlaw them would be banning many handguns and sporting rifles. It's a nit.

It is illegal to own guns without permits issued by the government. Try carrying one without a permit and see how fast you get locked up. And if you think the federal government is just dishing out permits by the millions for fully automatic weapons, you are insane. While not technically illegal to own a fully automatic machine gun, the government through the use of a burdensome and costly permitting process render them practically illegal. It is a distinction without a difference. If this was not the case then you'd see them being used in crimes all over the country.

I truly believe that Romney need to join Bush in the "SIT DOWN AND REST CAMPAIGN", because anyone with good sense see that he too is a liar. And if that's all you have to offer the people is more lies, we had enough of that with Bush!

obama, in true slick willy form, greased through the need for reduction of violence, finding sources of violence, crime caused by cheap hand guns in chicago, and vowed to try and ban assault weapons all inthe same breath. The NRA punched his card - now obama gets paid back with increased NRA supprt for romney - remember CNN, you reported it, and we read it.

I was beginning to think I was the only one who caught the fact that he said automatic weapons were illegal. He must not have known that the GOP did not renew the automatic weapons ban.

I am pretty sure a call to any class 3 dealer or a quick check of the BATFE site would have given him the correct answers on this.
