(CNN) – Former Democratic presidential candidate George McGovern was on life support and "no longer responsive" on Wednesday, two days after he was admitted to a hospice, his family said.
The 90-year-old former U.S. senator from South Dakota suffers from a variety of ailments "that have worsened over recent months" due to age, the McGovern family said in a statement issued Wednesday afternoon.
He is a good man, I wish present day democrats would follow his example.
Thank you for your service to our country. I worked on your campaign in 1972..you would have made a wonderful President. Go in Peace....
It wasn't just his service in WW2 .... being George McGovern is being a man.
My first presidential campaign. Peaceful journey, sir.
It's a shame that good democrats die and evil republicans live on and on.
Thank you for your service, Sir.
My prayers go out to his family. I wish them all the best.
God bless him.
I'm sorry to hear this. He has done a lot here to help substance abusers get their lives back together, all in honor of his daughter Teresa who died here about twenty years ago. A modest and humble man who very quietly and without a lot of fanfare did a lot of good. God bless you and your family.
