Ann Romney talks abortion on 'The View'

(CNN) – Ann Romney, the wife of the GOP presidential nominee, took to "The View" Thursday to talk up her husband as an advocate for women, though she wouldn't get into many details about her own political positions.

Asked whether she, like her husband, had changed her stance on abortion, Ann Romney demurred.

"The good news is, I'm not running for office and I don't have to say what I feel. But I am pro life. I'm happy to say that," the candidate's wife said.

Mitt Romney has been criticized for changing positions on the issue of abortion, dating back to his run for governor of Massachusetts. During that campaign, in 2002, he expressed full support for abortion rights for women. Ann Romney said Thursday he was pro-life all along, but governed from a pro-choice stance.

This cycle, the Republican candidate has expressed his opposition to abortion, with the exception of cases of rape, incest and when the life of the mother is at risk.

On "The View" Thursday, Ann Romney explained her husband changed his mind on abortion when legislation crossed his desk as governor regarding stem cell research.

"He could not have, on his conscience, creating human life for experimentation," Romney said. "That's when he came out saying he was pro life. I think we all have to understand this is an issue that is so tender and there are people on both sides of the issue, with very good conscience, coming with a different opinion."

The top issue for women, Mrs. Romney said, was the economy. Asked by Joy Behar whether access to abortion amounted to an economic issue, she again ceded to her husband.

"You know, again, I would love it if you'd get my husband on the couch, Joy, and you could go down with that all you want," she said.

Romney was originally scheduled to be a guest on the program with his wife, but canceled his appearance earlier this week. His campaign said the booking "was no longer going to work in the campaign schedule."

According to a campaign spokesman, the GOP nominee is spending Thursday doing debate prep and working on his speech for Thursday's Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation dinner, a black tie event that's a ritual for presidential nominees. He has no public campaign events.

At a surreptitiously recorded campaign fund-raiser in May, Romney called the ABC morning talk show "high risk," pointing to the political affiliations of the co-hosts. Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar and Sherri Shepherd have all expressed decidedly liberal standpoints, though Elisabeth Hasselbeck is an outspoken conservative.

"'The View' is high risk because of the five women on it. The other four are sharp tongued and not conservative, Whoopi Goldberg in particular," Romney told donors in Boca Raton, Florida earlier in the summer.

Asked about those comments Thursday, Mrs. Romney joked the hosts had misheard her husband.

"No, he said sharp and young," the candidate's wife said to laughs.

Mitt Phony is too uncomfortable having to answer questions to women, so he won't go to "The View".

@skewed,so you paint a whole party with the same brush? I do not subscribe to the notion that one bad apple spoils the whole barrel.Seems to be a popular sport across both parties. For shame!

If you believe abortion is wrong, don't have one. However, don't inflict your beliefs on others or make it unsafe for a woman to have an abortion. Women don't want to go back to the 1920's. Romney's ideas would keep women "barefoot and pregnant.

So what did First Lady Michelle Obama's beautiful dress cost.... $1795 but wait there is even more...that does not include the jacket over the dress that she wore all night. That was an additional $1495. Bring the grand total of Mrs Obama's ensemble to a whopping $3290.
    -------------------------------------------------
And speaking for millions of Americans, it is about time the Firt Lady went ahead and ASSUMED HER POSITION by completely dressing the part, just like, wait for it......every other First Lady, includding Laura Bush who did not let the fact that her husband was driving our country into the ground and killing innocent people in an unnecessary war stop her from wearing her duds.
And may I add that MIchelle looked STUNNING in pink, AND in GREAT shape.
    Thanks so much.

Mrs. Romney said, "....I would love it if you'd get my husband on the couch...". Since it was his choice not to appear, Mrs. Romney must not have much influence with Mitt. I would like to have heard the conversation between them when Mitt said he decided not the face the four sharp-tongued women and instead sent his wife to face them. Now that's shows what he's all about. Send the woman to clean up after your comments about these women.

To Thurston's cult, Women are lesser humans, so he would not bother getting questions asked to him by a panel of them.
Much like he did during Viet Nam, Thurston had no issue sending in someone to do the work, while he hid in comfort away from the real work.

    Earth to Ann:
Most women are not married to millionaire vulchers and don't have access to a Cadillac health care plan (like you). Further, we want a FL who is not afraid to speak WITHOUT the consent of her husband (you are not that woman). In order to work, (something you know absolutely nothing about), you must be healthy and we need the president's ACA plan to keep us that way. Yes, the economy is important but if you are not healthy, then you cannot work (understand Ann)?

This woman is TOTALLY not capable of thinking outside the Mormon mentality and her rich world, and I don't want her representing me on the world stage.
Good-bye Ann. Please go back to protecting your grown sons from serving in the military, while the rest of us continue to move forward with the president.

Interesting that no one has commented on Ann Romney and her son's comments on The View that Mitt requires time with her to "stabilize" him during the campaign. During this week's debate, the Governor's over-the-top attack on President Obama on whether Obama said "act of terror" in his Rose Garden speech after the Libyan embassy attack did not, for me, paint Romney as a "stable" guy. I think the media analysts should consider how that kind of firey/ blazened/kind of out of control approach would work in foreign relations. I guess that's for next week's debate on foreign policy.
