Ann Romney talks abortion on 'The View'

(CNN) – Ann Romney, the wife of the GOP presidential nominee, took to "The View" Thursday to talk up her husband as an advocate for women, though she wouldn't get into many details about her own political positions.

Asked whether she, like her husband, had changed her stance on abortion, Ann Romney demurred.

"The good news is, I'm not running for office and I don't have to say what I feel. But I am pro life. I'm happy to say that," the candidate's wife said.

Mitt Romney has been criticized for changing positions on the issue of abortion, dating back to his run for governor of Massachusetts. During that campaign, in 2002, he expressed full support for abortion rights for women. Ann Romney said Thursday he was pro-life all along, but governed from a pro-choice stance.

This cycle, the Republican candidate has expressed his opposition to abortion, with the exception of cases of rape, incest and when the life of the mother is at risk.

On "The View" Thursday, Ann Romney explained her husband changed his mind on abortion when legislation crossed his desk as governor regarding stem cell research.

"He could not have, on his conscience, creating human life for experimentation," Romney said. "That's when he came out saying he was pro life. I think we all have to understand this is an issue that is so tender and there are people on both sides of the issue, with very good conscience, coming with a different opinion."

The top issue for women, Mrs. Romney said, was the economy. Asked by Joy Behar whether access to abortion amounted to an economic issue, she again ceded to her husband.

"You know, again, I would love it if you'd get my husband on the couch, Joy, and you could go down with that all you want," she said.

Romney was originally scheduled to be a guest on the program with his wife, but canceled his appearance earlier this week. His campaign said the booking "was no longer going to work in the campaign schedule."

According to a campaign spokesman, the GOP nominee is spending Thursday doing debate prep and working on his speech for Thursday's Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation dinner, a black tie event that's a ritual for presidential nominees. He has no public campaign events.

At a surreptitiously recorded campaign fund-raiser in May, Romney called the ABC morning talk show "high risk," pointing to the political affiliations of the co-hosts. Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar and Sherri Shepherd have all expressed decidedly liberal standpoints, though Elisabeth Hasselbeck is an outspoken conservative.

"'The View' is high risk because of the five women on it. The other four are sharp tongued and not conservative, Whoopi Goldberg in particular," Romney told donors in Boca Raton, Florida earlier in the summer.

Asked about those comments Thursday, Mrs. Romney joked the hosts had misheard her husband.

"No, he said sharp and young," the candidate's wife said to laughs.

Wonder how Mrs. Romney felt sitting next to Joy Behar knowing that Joy, earlier this year boasted how she hopes the Romney home in CA is burned to the ground. I think it would take quite a bit of class and personal strength to sit beside that woman who is so blatently cruel and vulgar.

I, personally, don't care what her opinion is. What any woman does is up to her and her husband! I would never have an abortion, but until all of the children out there, without parents, have a home,I am for abortion! We went to a meeting once to adopt an older child. The room was full of potential parents, but unfortunitaly all of the Shirley Temple children go immediately. The cast offs were left. Oh sure. Don't abort, have the baby and give it up for adoption. But be sure it's blond haired and blue eyed, or it wil be thrown on the heap.

Everything is "hard" per Ann; it's hard raising 5 boys, it's hard being away from Mitt, it's hard not going to grandchildrens Bparties, it's hard for my children to hear criticism of their dad, it's hard for Mitt to see military people buried but when asked about her husbands failure to serve in Vietnam when drafted ane d did it have to do with Mormons, she said no he was on a 2 yr mission. When asked about her five (5) sons not serving, Ann says one son is training as a doctor helping Veterans and all her sons have served 2 year missions. I hope this woman never is never in a position to tell our military families "how hard it is" because "her hard" has no comparison to theirs and a majority of American families.

And God forbid we actually tell the populace what we really plan on doing – shutting down Planned Parenthood, repealin Roe V Wade, etc. Don't be fooled ladies, he will take your rights faster than a speeding bullet because in his world, women don't have rights, only the men do.

So he was pro choice to get elected in a liberal state, then changed his mnd to run for President and went all out pro life. But recently modified that to allow abortion in some cases – probably because that is the popular view.
Ann can't comment on her position but can go on talk shows to campaign for her husband. what is withthe Romney's and telling the truth or at least saying how they really feel?

Obviously you choose to ignore the great things Mrs. Romney has done for many years helping others.
Remind me again how many millions the US Taxpayers had to cough up to cover the cost of her dressage horse (uh, I mean her "animal therapy" horse).

Ann Romney's appearance on The View was very strange. She seemed extremely nervous and was occasionally snippy, and being escorted by one of her sons brought to mind how some women in the Middle East are not allowed to travel outside their homes unescorted by male relatives. She stood against stem cell research (calling it experimentation on embryos) ... she equated her husband's and sons' Mormon missions to military service ... and though no co-host asked the obvious question (Where's Mitt?), she went there by saying that as his wife she did not have to answer any questions, only Mitt could speak for Mitt. (Most of the co-hosts then said that they would have loved to have had him on the show. 🙂 ) Her son (that escorted her) then defended his brother's remarks about wanting to deck the President. NOT a stellar performance.

This woman makes me sick. She has that entitlement attitude and she is such a phony. She does not have the personality or the heart to be a first lady, she it definetly no match for First Lady MIchelle Obama.

Other than the 5.3 million private sector employee, the US auto worker and anyone who lost a loved one on 9/11. I'll start listening to the other candidate when he actually puts a PLAN on the table (rather than a shell game of asking for $8 trillion that would be balanced by $2.5 trillion in taxes from the middle class).

So Romney is afraid of women, especially liberal women, even though Hasselbeck would've gotten out her pompoms and eagerly cheerleaded for him on the sidelines.

Well we kinda figured out his feelings on women when he referred to his "binder full" of them, didn't we? Chattel.

When Ann Rmoney does not know what her husband's views are despite being with him and hearing him say them all the time during campaigns, how can she be so sure that the hosts of the show misheard her husband ?

    She is really SHARP !!!

If Anne Romney, ever becomes 1st lady she hopefully will have a platform like other 1st ladies. Michelle Obama/ childhood obesity, Laura Bush/ early childhood education, Hillary Clinton/childhood immunization, violence against women and Babara Bush/ family literacy. So far I have heard nothing from Ann Romney about any cause. Hopefully it will be something that deals with Womens Cancer not just Breast cancer, but also Cervical, Ovarian. All of these need awareness,Ovarian more so as it has no test to be used to detect it.

He can do lip service about abortion and change his position day to day, but the bottom line is who he would appoint to the court. He would just say it wasn’t his position…it was the courts. This wouldn’t stop abortions but drive people back to the illegal back street coat hanger abortions of the past. Desperate people do desperate things. If anybody thinks that they can’t really stop it, they are ignorant. Let’s at least keep it safe.

Why didn't Whoopi ask Michelle Obama about her stand on abortions or why is it they are not seen going to church?
Why didn't Beyhar (vulgar women) ask Michelle her view on stem cells?
These women are all for Obama and how their audience does not see that is beyond me... if they get anymore left they will fall off the stupid couch.

"he was pro-life all along, but governed from a pro-choice stance" Clearly this man doesn't live/govern (translate: get elected) by his convictions.... he just says and does whatever it takes to get the vote. That's the kind of man (or woman) I want leading the way.
