Ann Romney talks abortion on 'The View'

(CNN) – Ann Romney, the wife of the GOP presidential nominee, took to "The View" Thursday to talk up her husband as an advocate for women, though she wouldn't get into many details about her own political positions.

Asked whether she, like her husband, had changed her stance on abortion, Ann Romney demurred.

"The good news is, I'm not running for office and I don't have to say what I feel. But I am pro life. I'm happy to say that," the candidate's wife said.

Mitt Romney has been criticized for changing positions on the issue of abortion, dating back to his run for governor of Massachusetts. During that campaign, in 2002, he expressed full support for abortion rights for women. Ann Romney said Thursday he was pro-life all along, but governed from a pro-choice stance.

This cycle, the Republican candidate has expressed his opposition to abortion, with the exception of cases of rape, incest and when the life of the mother is at risk.

On "The View" Thursday, Ann Romney explained her husband changed his mind on abortion when legislation crossed his desk as governor regarding stem cell research.

"He could not have, on his conscience, creating human life for experimentation," Romney said. "That's when he came out saying he was pro life. I think we all have to understand this is an issue that is so tender and there are people on both sides of the issue, with very good conscience, coming with a different opinion."

The top issue for women, Mrs. Romney said, was the economy. Asked by Joy Behar whether access to abortion amounted to an economic issue, she again ceded to her husband.

"You know, again, I would love it if you'd get my husband on the couch, Joy, and you could go down with that all you want," she said.

Romney was originally scheduled to be a guest on the program with his wife, but canceled his appearance earlier this week. His campaign said the booking "was no longer going to work in the campaign schedule."

According to a campaign spokesman, the GOP nominee is spending Thursday doing debate prep and working on his speech for Thursday's Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation dinner, a black tie event that's a ritual for presidential nominees. He has no public campaign events.

At a surreptitiously recorded campaign fund-raiser in May, Romney called the ABC morning talk show "high risk," pointing to the political affiliations of the co-hosts. Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar and Sherri Shepherd have all expressed decidedly liberal standpoints, though Elisabeth Hasselbeck is an outspoken conservative.

"'The View' is high risk because of the five women on it. The other four are sharp tongued and not conservative, Whoopi Goldberg in particular," Romney told donors in Boca Raton, Florida earlier in the summer.

Asked about those comments Thursday, Mrs. Romney joked the hosts had misheard her husband.

"No, he said sharp and young," the candidate's wife said to laughs.

BIAS , they did not ask the president and Michelle the same line of questions. I guess their ratings will never increase.

It was smart of Mittens to pull out of 'The View'. He'd have been squewered by the very demographic he continues to flipflop in his attempts to get support from them.

I'd have been glued to my seat watching with glee.

I watched the View once...well not completely once... I can't believe it is still on. Who in their right mind watches it?

Clearly Ann Romeny just went on the View to pander to the female vote. You know, sort of like Paul Ryan washing CLEAN dishes in a soup kitchen to give the appeareance that he cares.

The Romeny's are so OUT OF TOUCH with most of America is sickening! I think it's sad that people think that by voting for a RICH white guy, that will make you RICH. Wake up – it's not, you'll just pay the taxes that he doesn't!!

What? No sappy romance questions or small talk for Mrs. Romney like the Obama's got? Oh that's right, all but one of the host's of The View are Obama worshipers.

Unbelievable bias. And Michelle Obama gets questions from the View if her husband is romantic. What B.S.

Abortion should not be a political issue. It is a personal choice, and it is not an easy one for most people

Wow, Romney's wife knows how to lie just like her husband! Is this the way of the Mormon faith?

Who cares what she thinks about abortion. Nancy Reagan, Mrs. Ford, Laura and Barbara Bush are all pro-choice and what did their opinion mean: NOTHING. Justice Kennedy is the swing vote and he will uphold Roe versus Wade and Justice Roberts said Roe versus wade is settled American Law. So what chance will anyone have of overturning Roe versus Wade. Nothing. Anti-choice people get over it. One can get an abortion in Italy and since 1978. Who cares what the Pope or Popes say.

What worries me the most is how she and her sons have to be a stabilizer for her husband due to excessive pressure caused by the campaign. If he is this unstable personalty now, what happens when he becomes president and has to deal 24 / 7 in the oval office which makes the pressures of a campaign look like a cake walk. He won't be able to go on an Mormon missions to escape. This is really unsettling for all the citizens of the U.S. and our Nato partners.

She's lying too now. His healthcare provided government-paid abortions in Massachusetts. When you think they can't lie any more, they find new ones to throw out there.

Is it possible to get a straight answer out of a Romney on any issue?

Her opinion is important to understand since her husband has said on the campaign trail, when asked about women's issues, that he wished she was there as he defers to her on those issues. Her opinion is therefore a proxy for his.

She should have just said. "If you don't like what Mitt says today just wait. He might believe something different by next week".

I am disgusted by the rhetoric of previous posters. Ann Romney is a great example to any woman. She is actively involved in her church, in charity work, is a great wife, mother, and grandmother, and is kind and soft-spoken. Get off her case. I'm willing to bet she has more brains than the majority of people on this blog. Why can't the conversation be about the issues? Why is it all about personal character assassination? Have you ever met Ann Romney? So, on what do you base your statements?

Ann Romney has more class and credibility than three of the liberal rags sitting on the couch. Isn't it amazing for all the talk of women's rights and respect that the liberal trolls spew, they always resort to hate filled speech.

She is a obedient Mormon wife who says what she is told .... if one of her kids had a illness that stem cells could help cure or granddaughter was raped she would think different ...BUT then again who are they to decide; rich spoiled , people who get thier way.......... I think the Lords gave us intelligence to take care of his people not judge them... they need a reality check into LIFE!

The "women" on the view with the exception of Hasselbeck are hypocritical bozos. Biased beyond belief. No one should ever to agree to be their "guest" and be subjected to their hateful bias. Just like the main stream media.

apparently it's a family trait to flip flop and not give any form of an answer. Either stand up for what you believe in or stop trying to fool people that you're on both sides of the issue.

Poor old Barbara has lost her credibility as a serious journalist. She wants to tell Obama how handsome he is and ask Michelle if Barrack is romantic. Gesh! Is make you want to was the stink off after watching the View.

They asked Michelle Obama whether the president is 'romantic' — but when Ann Romney took her turn on 'The View' couch, Whoopi Goldberg & Co. went for the jugular, including the Romneys' Mormon faith.

Thjs show is so far to the left you can't find it on a map.

Hey "alienmom", you want some cheese to go with your "whine"?? People like you need to get a grip on reality, or does your husband make the same kind of money as Mittens and do you live in an exclusive gated country club? Michelle Obama is so much more intelligent than Raggedy Ann (thanks Romney is NOT my hero). What a strong person she is, and a GREAT mother. OBAMBA IN 2012..
