Ann Romney talks abortion on 'The View'

(CNN) – Ann Romney, the wife of the GOP presidential nominee, took to "The View" Thursday to talk up her husband as an advocate for women, though she wouldn't get into many details about her own political positions.

Asked whether she, like her husband, had changed her stance on abortion, Ann Romney demurred.

"The good news is, I'm not running for office and I don't have to say what I feel. But I am pro life. I'm happy to say that," the candidate's wife said.

Mitt Romney has been criticized for changing positions on the issue of abortion, dating back to his run for governor of Massachusetts. During that campaign, in 2002, he expressed full support for abortion rights for women. Ann Romney said Thursday he was pro-life all along, but governed from a pro-choice stance.

This cycle, the Republican candidate has expressed his opposition to abortion, with the exception of cases of rape, incest and when the life of the mother is at risk.

On "The View" Thursday, Ann Romney explained her husband changed his mind on abortion when legislation crossed his desk as governor regarding stem cell research.

"He could not have, on his conscience, creating human life for experimentation," Romney said. "That's when he came out saying he was pro life. I think we all have to understand this is an issue that is so tender and there are people on both sides of the issue, with very good conscience, coming with a different opinion."

The top issue for women, Mrs. Romney said, was the economy. Asked by Joy Behar whether access to abortion amounted to an economic issue, she again ceded to her husband.

"You know, again, I would love it if you'd get my husband on the couch, Joy, and you could go down with that all you want," she said.

Romney was originally scheduled to be a guest on the program with his wife, but canceled his appearance earlier this week. His campaign said the booking "was no longer going to work in the campaign schedule."

According to a campaign spokesman, the GOP nominee is spending Thursday doing debate prep and working on his speech for Thursday's Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation dinner, a black tie event that's a ritual for presidential nominees. He has no public campaign events.

At a surreptitiously recorded campaign fund-raiser in May, Romney called the ABC morning talk show "high risk," pointing to the political affiliations of the co-hosts. Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar and Sherri Shepherd have all expressed decidedly liberal standpoints, though Elisabeth Hasselbeck is an outspoken conservative.

"'The View' is high risk because of the five women on it. The other four are sharp tongued and not conservative, Whoopi Goldberg in particular," Romney told donors in Boca Raton, Florida earlier in the summer.

Asked about those comments Thursday, Mrs. Romney joked the hosts had misheard her husband.

"No, he said sharp and young," the candidate's wife said to laughs.

It doesn’t matter how Romney and the Republican try to spin their policies, the American people know how disastrous those policies have been for this country, especially for the Middle Class and less fortunate.

Americans are not stupid. How can anyone even thing Romney’s policies will be better for this country. Romney and the Republicans policies from 2001 to 2008 brought this great nation to its knees, their policies caused the Great Recession, their policies wiped out almost 10,000,000 jobs as a direct result of the Great Recession, their policies wiped out retirement savings for tens of millions of Americans as a direct result to the Great Recession, their policies took a $1 trillion surplus to a $13 trillion deficit, their policies resulted in the decline in the percentage of Americans that are in the middle class, their policies resulted in tens of millions of Americans without healthcare, their policies resulted in millions of Americans losing their homes, their policies will be detrimental to Latinos and all other minorities, their policies will result in another war in the Middle East, and the list goes on.

No Americans in their right mind will believe that Romney/Ryan policies will be better for the Economy. The only way for anyone to think that is if they are suffering from total amnesia. People will remember what happened in 2007/2008 and the years leading up to the Great Recession. It was the exact same policies that Romney is advocating now that caused the Great Recession. We are not that dumb to think that these same policies that caused the Great Recession will somehow magically make the economy better.

I guess Romney/Ryan think we are all stupid and don’t know the truth and can’t remember the dark days of the great recession of 2007 and 2008 and the years leading up to it.

The choice is clear. Do we want to go back to the exact same policies (Romney/Ryan current policies) that brought America (this great Nation) to its knees or do we want to continue to build on the recovery.

The Obamas have already been on The View but this is AMormoney's first visit. Of course they're going to ask questions of her that are tough. Her husband is vying for POTUS. If he was schlepping a movie they would ask about that. Go back and read what the Obamas were asked on previous appearances before making assumptions about questions they were asked. I would have liked to ask her if she's proud that her grown son wanted to take a swing at a sitting President. Stay classy, Mormoneys.

Is it just my imagination or is this headline a little misleading. Doesn't sound like she actually talked about anything on the show. Couldn't even answer what her husband's position are on anything. I find it particularly amusing that she joked about what we heard him say about the View on the tape with the 47% comment. So we are not supposed to believe our own ears now?

Ann Romney states ""You know, again, I would love it if you'd get my husband on the couch, Joy, and you could go down with that all you want," You'd think Mrs. Romney would choose her words more carefully. Inviting Joy to have at her husband on a couch with sex acts in front of a national audience is no way to grab votes.

This family is too thin skinned to be in politics. I recall some years ago hearing how Romney and his wife were big supporters of Planned Parenthood. Mitt has more credibility when you hear him talk about his support for safe abortions etc.

I shudder to think of these people in the White House.

Even though I am a Democrat I can not figure out what it would be like to have him govern. Who is he and what does he really stand for ?

Compare this interview with the one done with the Obamas. The interview with Ann R was like an interrogation; the one with the Obamas was like a tea party. The View obviously only has One View, Democratic Liberal, in spite of Hasselback. where is the impartial interviewing?

She is married to a man who "served" his country during the Vietnam war by going to Paris. Yet he rallied in support of the war since his hide was not in danger. She and Romney have a multitude of sons and NOT ONE has served in the military. Romney is already chomping at the bit to be a chicken hawk . "Let's go to war, but I can't fight and neither should my sons" is his mantra. Let others do it, huh Mitt? He didn't even mention the troops during his acceptance speech.

The issue for many John the Historian is that it is likely that one and probably two Supreme Court Justices will be appointed in the next 4 years. And it can be overturned.

When asked what she would say to mothers whose children come home in body bags, when her husband and sons have not served military duty was answered with saying that they were serving missions for their church. I do not have a problem with people not serving time in the military. But it does bother me that a rather large portion of LDS people try to make others believe that LDS missions are almost the same as serving in the Peace Corp! They are really knocking on doors, trying to convert people to their religion. This is their primary "Mission."

I give Ann a lot of credit for sitting on the same couch with them. And allenmom, you are so right. Are you all also aware that BO supports partial-birth abortion? Horror. After Romney wins, you can still get your abortions, birth control, and exams. You know that nothing there will change...you just like to stir up trouble and spew nastiness toward others.

The quuestions, that I assume that are asked of Ann/Mittens, is based on their position that they have shared with the world, which a lot of us have assessed as, OUT OF TOUCH.,AND KEPT WOMEN WITH BINDERS, HOME AND PREGNANT.I have seen questioned asked of the Obama's that are also based on what has been circulating in the airwaves. Yes most of the ladies on the view are lib. leaning, but as we all have seen/heard, Mittens has reinvented the wheel on issues the entire time he has been running. Ann R., though she has had a couple of physical challenges, she has no clue on how real women, especially in the middle class what they have to do to survive.Money for them has never been a concern. Birth control is an important issue for women. The Romneys have been very fortunate 5 healthy young men, and they could have afforded 10..15.. based on their assets.

First, the View invited her. Second, she was attacked with questions that she doesn't need to be answering. Why wasn't she and Mitt's love life discussed like Moochelle's and Odumbo's were? Finally, she's not running for President. She can think the sky is green and it DOESN'T MATTER!! Oh and those saying the Romney's are rich so therefore they're "out of touch". Newsflash..THE OBAMA'S ARE RICH TOO!!!!!

Why even go on The View? Nothing there but a bunch of mindless leftists Obama droids that will only attack and try to embarrass you. Absolutely nothing to be gained.

President Obama has never been afraid to meet with the women of the View. Romney obviously is, so they tried to ask Ann the hard questions which she refused to answer.

Why isn't anyone commenting on what else was said on the show: the fact that she is a "Mitt stabilizer" according to her son, or that she calms Mitt down if he gets "too wired up", that he doesn't function well if he is away from her too long. What is wrong with this man? And even Ann said months ago that she worries for his "mental well-being" I would be very worried if Romney becomes the most poweful man in the world if elected in Nov.

I am disgusted by the rhetoric of previous posters. Ann Romney is a great example to any woman. She is actively involved in her church, in charity work, is a great wife, mother, and grandmother, and is kind and soft-spoken. Get off her case. I'm willing to bet she has more brains than the majority of people on this blog. Why can't the conversation be about the issues? Why is it all about personal character assassination? Have you ever met Ann Romney? So, on what do you base your statements?
    -----------------
Gee – maybe her reference to us as "YOU PEOPLE", or 'THOSE PEOPLE" has a little to do with it. Along with her lying to cover his lies. Or maybe the fact that her hubby was and is a pushy bully and they've taught their kids to be the same.

I hope someone asked Ann about her husband's mental state. Ann said it was her biggest concern if he becomes president. If Ann is worried I'm really worried, she knows him better than me.

Ann lives in her own elite world. How could she possilbly equate going on a Mormon mission to serving in a war in Vietnam or Iraq? Then again Mitt said his sons serve by helping him get elected. Out of touch and out of our world

The babes on the view asked Mooshell Obama nothing but questions about her relationship with her husband, and other touchy-feely softball topics. But when Ann Romney arrived, out came the knives. The Whoopster is especially nasty, but that's hardly a surprise to anyone. Just showing up to be interrogated by this vicious, spoiled bunch of New Yawkers (Ms. Hasslebeck excepted), and doing it with poise and grace, speaks to Ann Romney's character, a topic unfamiliar to Goldberg, Behar and Walters.
