Ann Romney talks abortion on 'The View'

(CNN) – Ann Romney, the wife of the GOP presidential nominee, took to "The View" Thursday to talk up her husband as an advocate for women, though she wouldn't get into many details about her own political positions.

Asked whether she, like her husband, had changed her stance on abortion, Ann Romney demurred.

"The good news is, I'm not running for office and I don't have to say what I feel. But I am pro life. I'm happy to say that," the candidate's wife said.

Mitt Romney has been criticized for changing positions on the issue of abortion, dating back to his run for governor of Massachusetts. During that campaign, in 2002, he expressed full support for abortion rights for women. Ann Romney said Thursday he was pro-life all along, but governed from a pro-choice stance.

This cycle, the Republican candidate has expressed his opposition to abortion, with the exception of cases of rape, incest and when the life of the mother is at risk.

On "The View" Thursday, Ann Romney explained her husband changed his mind on abortion when legislation crossed his desk as governor regarding stem cell research.

"He could not have, on his conscience, creating human life for experimentation," Romney said. "That's when he came out saying he was pro life. I think we all have to understand this is an issue that is so tender and there are people on both sides of the issue, with very good conscience, coming with a different opinion."

The top issue for women, Mrs. Romney said, was the economy. Asked by Joy Behar whether access to abortion amounted to an economic issue, she again ceded to her husband.

"You know, again, I would love it if you'd get my husband on the couch, Joy, and you could go down with that all you want," she said.

Romney was originally scheduled to be a guest on the program with his wife, but canceled his appearance earlier this week. His campaign said the booking "was no longer going to work in the campaign schedule."

According to a campaign spokesman, the GOP nominee is spending Thursday doing debate prep and working on his speech for Thursday's Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation dinner, a black tie event that's a ritual for presidential nominees. He has no public campaign events.

At a surreptitiously recorded campaign fund-raiser in May, Romney called the ABC morning talk show "high risk," pointing to the political affiliations of the co-hosts. Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar and Sherri Shepherd have all expressed decidedly liberal standpoints, though Elisabeth Hasselbeck is an outspoken conservative.

"'The View' is high risk because of the five women on it. The other four are sharp tongued and not conservative, Whoopi Goldberg in particular," Romney told donors in Boca Raton, Florida earlier in the summer.

Asked about those comments Thursday, Mrs. Romney joked the hosts had misheard her husband.

"No, he said sharp and young," the candidate's wife said to laughs.

That's the scary part, we really have no idea what he stands for, and what he'd do if elected. He can morph to whatever situation he's in, say what that particular group wants to here. He's contradicted himself so many times – how can anyone trust him in such a powerful role as the President?

I don't understand why Ann Romney would agree to such a liberal forum as the view? I don't understand why romney would agree to such a liberal quasijournalist like crowley as a moderator? Both have reaped what the should have expected.

It's too bad you can't trust the President. He is a man of principles and he really cares about this country. If you can't see that everytime he comes on TV you should really study his opponnets the republican party. If you don't get it by this time in your life, I feel sad for people who cannot tell a lie from the truth!

I find it quite amazing that a woman like Ann Romney would think she could dignify why neither her husband or 5 sons
ever served in the military, but had the nerve to say they all served on missions. Is she really thinking we are all
stupid. Missions to recruit people to enter your religion is of absolutely no value to the USA. In addition to that, who do
they think they are fooling. Their 5 sons and 18 grandchildren will never have to pay $1.00 of a student loan and THAT is what Mitt Romney is going to protect, certainly not the millions of students that might never otherwise get a chance to go to school.

"Ann Romney talks abortion on 'The View'"

NO she didn't. She avoided the questions. That's not "talking about" something.

She is NOT a woman I would invite over for coffee and cookies. Michelle is classy, yet fully approachable. Obama/Biden Forward. Women, wake up!

Mitt's too chicken to go on the View? And I guess that makes Obama too chicken to go anywhere else. Obama hasn't had to answer one uncomfortable questiong... except in the debates. Romney takes questions every single day. America knows who the chicken is.

Why she went to the View if she doesn’t want to talk about what her husband agenda is? And what kind of education they gave to their boys that they do not respect the President of the United State!! I haven't seen, in all my life, so much disrespect for our President.

Jan: The one thing that the Romney's do stand for is life now. People change their minds all the time, you, me, everyone, and that includes the president.
When I was young I didnt think of an abortion as killing a baby because I couldnt see it, touch it ect ect, so to me it didnt exsist.
Once I was older and could see that there was a true living child in my wifes belly...I was sold. It is a baby with a beating heart like yours and mine.
To me if someone were to kill that baby in the womb, why would they not be able to kill their baby after it was taken out of the womb because it had a problem or it wasnt what she wanted?
Kill the baby in the womb and you dont hear it cry in pain I guess.

Look, if you support the 2nd amendment, then shut up about abortion. You're just as responsible for people dying as any abortion doctor.

I think people need to do their homework. Over turning Roe Vs. Wade means that the issue of Abortion will be decided on a state level and will not receive a blanket over all 50 states from a federal level.

Yep, lipstick was applied, but it still sqealed like a pig when it came to answering real questions concerning the policies of her wayward, flip-flopping husband. Good thing she was expected to be empty-headed...she lived up to every rightwinger's expectation of an obedient and close-mouthed wife. I do wonder just how uncomfortable she is though, now that her husband has drifted so far to the right since he was a moderate [R] back in MASS.

My first thought when I started reading the story was, "Romney is afraid of alienating women on the show and sent his wife to speak for him because his views wouldn't sit well with them." I guess my first thought was correct. The Romney's are just a couple talking heads. They aren't honest. Ann Romney said that her husband was pro-life all along. This just proves that Mitt will say whatever he thinks people want to hear to win. We don't really know what he thinks. I'm an Independent but, not undecided. I know what Obama believes. He's the kind of guy who helps others and is happy to do it. He's the kind of guy who would rather see others improve their lives than make big bucks in a powerful law firm. All I know about Mitt is that he doesn't have a problem with squashing some employees for a buck and grabbing their pension for himself. Mitt is out for Mitt. He makes lots of money from capital gains and wants to eliminate the capital gains tax for his own benefit. If he has to cut programs for the needy to do it–he will.

Mitt believes in everything you believe in. He loves Socialist Security and Medicare and all the great social programs. He loves tax cuts and balanced budgets and huge increases in defense spending. He'll give everyone everything they want and what's wonderful . . . it won't add a penny to the debt and the budget will be balanced and everyone will have flowers in their garden again. La, lala . . .

Obama does not understand global economics, as long as the US will be the leading producer of weapons in the world the us will not advance in other areas of economy.

Oh you mean like the Romney who wants to give the military an additional $2 trillion more than what they asked for so that they can continue to build weapons? How about you open up a newspaper and educated yourself instead of parroting Fox talking points.

Romneys Plan is to just cut taxes-and Ryans Plan is to cut Programs for the poor by 62%. That means job losses not gains. Economists say up to a million jobs will be LOST not gained. The American Jobs Act will create 1.9 million jobs.
