Ann Romney talks abortion on 'The View'

(CNN) – Ann Romney, the wife of the GOP presidential nominee, took to "The View" Thursday to talk up her husband as an advocate for women, though she wouldn't get into many details about her own political positions.

Asked whether she, like her husband, had changed her stance on abortion, Ann Romney demurred.

"The good news is, I'm not running for office and I don't have to say what I feel. But I am pro life. I'm happy to say that," the candidate's wife said.

Mitt Romney has been criticized for changing positions on the issue of abortion, dating back to his run for governor of Massachusetts. During that campaign, in 2002, he expressed full support for abortion rights for women. Ann Romney said Thursday he was pro-life all along, but governed from a pro-choice stance.

This cycle, the Republican candidate has expressed his opposition to abortion, with the exception of cases of rape, incest and when the life of the mother is at risk.

On "The View" Thursday, Ann Romney explained her husband changed his mind on abortion when legislation crossed his desk as governor regarding stem cell research.

"He could not have, on his conscience, creating human life for experimentation," Romney said. "That's when he came out saying he was pro life. I think we all have to understand this is an issue that is so tender and there are people on both sides of the issue, with very good conscience, coming with a different opinion."

The top issue for women, Mrs. Romney said, was the economy. Asked by Joy Behar whether access to abortion amounted to an economic issue, she again ceded to her husband.

"You know, again, I would love it if you'd get my husband on the couch, Joy, and you could go down with that all you want," she said.

Romney was originally scheduled to be a guest on the program with his wife, but canceled his appearance earlier this week. His campaign said the booking "was no longer going to work in the campaign schedule."

According to a campaign spokesman, the GOP nominee is spending Thursday doing debate prep and working on his speech for Thursday's Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation dinner, a black tie event that's a ritual for presidential nominees. He has no public campaign events.

At a surreptitiously recorded campaign fund-raiser in May, Romney called the ABC morning talk show "high risk," pointing to the political affiliations of the co-hosts. Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar and Sherri Shepherd have all expressed decidedly liberal standpoints, though Elisabeth Hasselbeck is an outspoken conservative.

"'The View' is high risk because of the five women on it. The other four are sharp tongued and not conservative, Whoopi Goldberg in particular," Romney told donors in Boca Raton, Florida earlier in the summer.

Asked about those comments Thursday, Mrs. Romney joked the hosts had misheard her husband.

"No, he said sharp and young," the candidate's wife said to laughs.

Women like Woman to Woman input and when Ann was asked a Woman to Woman question regarding a woman issue statement she had just made, Ann said you need to talk to her husband about that. Oh my God, could you imagine this woman sitting down with a World leaders wife and just talk about baking Welsh cookies, raising kids and her grandchildren, she reminds me of Sarah Palin.

I wonder if she is as prolife as Republican Congressman Scott Desjarlais. Scott, a physician got his girlfriend pregnant and then tried to push her into getting an abortion. The GOP wants YOU to be prolife, but not the wealthy, not for themselves.

Where is my comment? You keep taking them down becaue they make so much sense. Ann Romney is just like her husband. They realy think the American people are dumb and stupid. They are very FAKE people. Romney has not offered 1 sound plan to fix the economy yet you guys are all running to him. He is laughing to the bank. Stand up America, read listen and learn. Don't let these people pull the wool over your eyes. Trust me if you think Obama was bad wait until you put htem in the White house.

She practiced this interview hard because she didn't want to slip up in front of Romney and others from her church. The typical Stepford wife, don't ask any different type of question she might short out she's not programmed by Romney that way!!

Lob the fluff questions to M. O's lack of military service or church leanings never discussed.NO,those would be unbearable and embarrassing for M. The View lasts because there are an abundance of women in this country who cannot make a decision on their own. I hope they are at least doing the laundry and planning supper while they watch this drivel.I gave them 6 months when they first came out.Their total lack of balance with interviews lost my support at that time.I am a leader ,not a follower.Ms Walters lost my respect when she lost control to Whoopi and Joy .Keep making these women rich ladies, the very ladies who slam someone else's hard won riches.

How can you stand seeing your husband lying every day, day after day? DShame on you. Why can't you stop him? Do you realize that if he loses, that is simply because people want to see someone decent and trustworthy. oh, I forgot, that is how you guys make money all the time.

Ann said, "...he was pro-life all along, but governed from a pro-choice stance."
    --
Translation: He was left before he was right, and now he's extremely in the middle, when it suits him. But, he could change his mind tomorrow, depending on his audience.

So US Weekly had a huge story about how Ann Romney pink Osca del Renta dress she wore to the last debate cost $1600+. typical rich Romneys, OH the HORROR!! They are so rich while America is strugglling!!! OH They have no heart!!! to spend so much instead of getting something fr J Crew like where Michelle Obama shops.

Oh but it gets better. Mrs. Obama's dress only cost....... drum roll please.. remember, the Obamas they get us poor folks, they are for the poor and the middle class. So what if their polcies have hurt the poor and the middle class the most. They are for us.....
So what did First Lady Michelle Obama's beautiful dress cost.... $1795 but wait there is even more...that does not include the jacket over the dress that she wore all night. That was an additional $1495. Bring the grand total of Mrs Obama's ensemble to a whopping $3290. Twice (just like the gas prices) more than what those evil Ann Romney who eats poor kids for breakfast. I'm sure Michael Kors is very happy!

Well, it he is doubtful of his ability to contend with Whoppi or others on the View, why does he feel he can stand up to Putin. the Ayatollahs, et al. Geez, he cannot even stand up for what he believes in to his own party !

I'll admit up front that I don't like anything about Ann Romney. She appears to be exactly what she is....a wealthy, pampered matron who expects to get her way. She did give her position on abortion..........she's against it.
As for Mitt, he was probably scared stiff to sit on the couch at 'The View'. Mitt Romney strikes me as being a huge coward. Romney doesn't seem to enjoy having anyone poke fun at him, and he doesn't like to be confronted. Joy and Whoopi would be only too happy to confront him about his flip-flops...and maybe poke a little fun at him while they're at it. No wonder he was too busy to attend.

Hey Romney is not my hero......I didn't quite get that ....is that what Joy is supposed to be saying when she's going down with Romney on the couch.....all this political stuff is so confusing. Ann is a lovely person and it is quite obvious that she has lived the life of a Mormon woman...no opinions, no interupting PaPa, no speaking unless she is spoken to...sad

Nice try. But u see when Democrats like Jared Laughner, the guy that gunned down Gabby Giffords, a 911 truther who hated GWB, no one labeled the Dems a hypocrites b/c they were anti gun. Infact when it all happened the Dems lied again and blamed it on Tea party what ever. What about the Colorado guy that shot up a movie theater. Mum about his political affliiation but u bet if he were Republican, front page news for months.
U see, the real "skewed" is u and I just proved it.

Why bother even having her on the show if she's just going to dance around the issue and be as evasive about it as she has been about their tax returns?

    "Sharp and young"..?
That makes the program high-risk? Does that mean Romney is only comfortable with dull, old talkshow hosts..?

the GOP are only pro-life when it suits them. That is, when they need evangelicals to support them. Behind closed doors, They are saying whatever they think needs to be said publicly to keep their base happy. On tape, Republican Congressman Scott Desjarlais, a physician who, got his girlfriend pregnant and then tried to push her into getting an abortion. If conservatives manage to get enough power (supreme court or congress) to get abortion banned, they know that they still have the money and power to get abortions for their friends and mistresses. The poor and middle class will be left to have unwanted pregnancies or risky back-alley abortions. Its funny how they claim to be for small g government when it comes to regulations on oil companies and banks, but they are all for big government when deciding what a women can do in her doctor's office

This is a story that is hardly worthy of consideration; #1 Who cares what Mitt's ditzy wife thinks? #2 Did anyone really expect Mrs. Romney to say anything remotely interesting about Mitt? This whole article only proves how protected the Romney's are about responding to any question or giving any substansive answers to any questions. Anne is prolife? Really? I would have never guessed.

She went on The View and said nothing because she doesn't trust herself to say the "right" or "Right" thing. After all, that "We've shown all we're going to show you people" comment went over like a lead balloon, but at least she was being honest. They have in fact given us nothing else.
Meanwhile her son Tag-You're-It must've been raised in a barn by a cow as evidenced by that comment he made about wanting to take a swing at the President of our country. Someone should ask Ann if she doesn't think that Gagg should know how to better behave in public for a MAN his age, and know how to be decorous and respectful of his President and his elder.
Someone should also inform Tagg that the majority of people in this country will re-elect President Obama to a second term precisely because his father IS A LIAR.

Evidently the liberal, atheists want the right and protection to kill babies to avoid moral and social responsibility. And, to top it all off, the rest of us should pay for their contraception through insurance premiums or the abortion if they chose not to use any......something only a democrat could love! ROMNEY/RYAN 2012!

"Mitt Romney: I STAND FOR NOTHING !!!!"

Mittens doesn't even stand when he pees....and the only people left undecided with such stark choices before them are the same people who can't decide whether to sit or stand when they do the same.
