Biden shakes it up with 'Etch-A-Sketch' reference

Las Vegas, Nevada (CNN) - Long before binders and Big Bird, the outsized catchphrase of this election was "Etch-A-Sketch."

Nearly seven months after the children's toy had its fifteen minutes of fame on the campaign trail, Vice President Joe Biden remixed it with a recent campaign trail moment and unveiled the new hybrid line about Mitt Romney's tax plan at a rally in Nevada.

"As the president said the day after the debate Romney's plans were sketchy," Biden said, referencing a comment Obama made at Tuesday's debate and again since. "Well, folks I don't think they were just sketchy - I think they were Etch-A-Sketchy."

Biden was rallying supporters in Las Vegas, a city where both he and Republican challenger Mitt Romney have held six events each this general election.

The vice president also lit into Romney and GOP vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan, referencing a book

He allowed that the Republican candidates are "decent men… good fathers… good husbands," but said their policies have Americans in their sights.

"Ryan has written a book called 'The Young Guns' with two other fellows, members of the House, these are the Republican leaders of the House," Biden said, referencing a book Ryan wrote with House Majority Leader Eric Cantor and Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy.

"Unfortunately," Biden continued, "the bullets are aimed at you."

Brendan Buck, a spokesman for Ryan, said the comments were "over-the-top rhetoric" that is "disappointing, but not all that surprising."

"In the absence of a vision or plan to move the country forward, the Vice President is left only with ugly political attacks beneath the dignity of the office he occupies," Buck said.

Biden criticized his opponents for their stances on abortion, an issue which returned to the spotlight after Romney said in a recent newspaper interview there is "no legislation with regards to abortion that I'm familiar with that would become part of my agenda."

He and his campaign later sought to clarify that he would support efforts to end federal funding for Planned Parenthood and would support judicial nominees who favor overturning Roe v. Wade.

Obama's campaign has hit Romney on the issue in television ads and on the campaign trail, as Biden did in Nevada.

"And after these debates, you have any doubt who they will likely appoint to the Supreme Court of the United States," he said. "How much chance do you think Roe v. Wade will survive after four years of a Romney Supreme Court?"

After the rally, the vice president visited a local elementary school where he mingled with kids on the playground.

"Everybody here gonna go to college?" Biden asked, as the fifth graders said they would.

Mingling with the students, he charmed them and their teachers.

"Thanks for letting me come to the playground," he said. "I wish we were coming to play basketball."

One child lodged a special request of the vice president-to send President Barack Obama to visit with them too. Biden assured them he'd put in the request and made sure to put in the good word for his boss.

"I'm Vice President Biden and I work with Barack Obama. He's a good guy."

I can’t believe republicans are crying foul about the VPs bullet remark. If Ryan did not want a weapons reference used then he should have titled his book “Young Clubs” instead of “Young Guns”, because without a bullet that’s all you have in your hand. Give me a break!

Joe Biden doesn't need "sympathy" from anyone!! He has more character in his little finger than Robme and lyin Ryan put together. A candidate that calls CEOs and tells them to tell their employees how to vote–real character-may not be illegal, but there are lots of things that aren't illegal-doesn't mean they're moral!!

Republicans don't have a plan. This 5 point plan that they are trying to fool America with is the same old stuff that has been around for years. Every President for the last 50 years has been talking about oil and energy independence. Does anyone seriously think that Romney will be any different in achieving this? Tax cuts, now that's a novel idea. Never thought anyone would think of that one. Balance the budget, good luck! Encourage and promote small business! Brilliant!

Come on America, wake up and stop falling for the garbage both sides are trying to sell you.

Jo McClain- so you think that church members should not have an opinion or be able to vote? The constitution called for Freedom of Religion, not Freedom from Religion. Pastors have every right to discuss the condition of our nation and their feelings about. If the IRS decides to challenge thousands of churches...so be it.

I cant believe anyone listens to Obama and Biden. Obama makes promises during his first election, can't keep one of them, states that when you dont have something good to run on, then trash the other person. Biden doesn't even know what wars we have been in over the last 4 years. He asks people, how many of you know someone who as been hurt or killed in Iran........ I never knew we had a war in Iran however maybe this was foreshadowing... Guess all of you want 4 more years of the past 4 years including increased government dependency. Kills me how the Dems keep the 47% comment going- everyone knows who he was talking about however they want to point it at Grandma, veterans, seniors.

Romney's entire campaign has been on an Etch-a-Sketch!
He shakes it and re-words it based on the audience.
He tells his 1% backers he could care less about half the country, then tells that half of the country he does care......flip/flopping everytime.

Rogere- Romney has a five point plan but libs can't comprhend those big numbers. Obama has NO PLAN except more of the same policies that have been a total failure. Tax cuts worked for John F Kennedy, Ronald Reagan, and George W. Bush. Increased business activity, profitability, and set records for REVENUES.

Please list his 5 point plan. I would love to know more about it instead of vague assumptions on tax deductions and loopholes.

Umm, the Ryan people DO remember when members of his party said that the president is the product of bestiality... I guess not. Ok Ryan, get offended because the VP made fun of your book. Thats a good way to show you're an adult

Let me get this straight......they write a book wherein they call themselves the "Young Guns"........and then cry foul when the VP references guns and bullets when talking about it? Are there no serious Republicans anymore?

The major point of the 5 point plan is to put people back to work, the more people working, the more taxes get paid instead of tax dollars going to fund people who cant find a job and have to claim wellfare which is at historic levels under this President. Taxing the rich wont get it done as every economist has said.

Did anyone notice when Candy asked the challenger about what would happen if his 5-point plan didn't work, his head exploded and he shouted angrily that it would work, it will work!!!? No explanation – just it will work because he angrily said so.

Joe was asking people, in a campaign speech if they lost loved ones in either the Iraq or Iran war. Not just once but at least three times. One heart beat away people....one heart beat away!

This. And also, Texan, Seperation of Church and State is in there too. If that's not enough or you decide to interpret that in an odd way, it goes on to say that (paraphrased) the United States won't endorse one religion over another and I KNOW that's something you Christians just cant handle. Aren't 8 Crusades enough for you zealots? ...No better than the Taliban...

And doesn't the "Jobs! Jobs! Jobs!" thing sound familiar? Where are they? We were supposed to get them in 2010 according to that GOP bunch that ran back then.

KTP: Really? Ending the war in Iraq, setting the timeline in Afghanistan, passing health care, bringing down (yes DOWN) the deficit, stopping the 800,000 a month job losses and replacing them with consistent employments gains? So, not kept his promises how? Admittedly, job gains/economy growth has been slower than we'd like, but it is amazing he got anything done in the midst of GOP obstructionism and refusal to cooperate. Romney offers us a plan, but won't tell us what it is (and the 5 point plan doesn't count, it's basically a Bush retread)

@ I Love You Joe Biden... Thats nice but this election is about competency and leadership. Joes a real loose cannon and his competency seems to be diminishing. Remember "He means what he says"....but he's starting to forget what he says. I see a sunset in his immediate future.
