Romney son jokes he wants to 'take a swing' at Obama

(CNN) – Mitt Romney's oldest son joked in a radio interview Wednesday his preferred method of dealing with a combative President Barack Obama was to "take a swing" at his dad's rival.

Asked on the Bill Lumaye radio show what it's like "to hear the President of the United States call your dad a liar," Tagg Romney joked about his fantasy response.

"Jump out of your seat and you want to rush down to the debate stage and take a swing at him," he said. "But you know you can't do that because, well, first because there's a lot of Secret Service between you and him, but also because that's the nature of the process. You know they're going to try to do anything they can do to make my dad into something he's not."

"We signed up for it, we've got to kind of sit there and take our punches, and send them the other way," he continued.

One of Tagg Romney's brothers, Josh, downplayed the comments in a Thursday morning interview on ABC's "The View."

"That brother has slugged me a couple of times," Josh Romney said. "I'm sure President Obama has nothing to worry about."

Asked about the original comments on Thursday, Romney campaign spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg said Tagg Romney was "joking about how frustrating this process can be for family."

CNN's Rachel Streitfeld contributed to this report.

And why is this news? I'm sure most of America who watched that debate were screaming at their televisions for their particular candidate, or against the opponent. And to be in the same room, I'm sure would be quite intense. Never have liked the Town Hall approach to presidential debates – too artificial and strange.

This is what we have running for President on the Republican side. A complete and total lack of respect for the President and the office. They talk about being feeling entitled. These people feel as if everythign ios owed them including the Pesidency. Unfortunately for America toomany people are buying the used car from Romney and he will probably win. God help everyone who is barely making it right now.

I don't blame you, Tagg. What a disgusting thing to do, call someone a liar. Romney has consistently attacked Obama on his record – Obama has had to resort to name-calling. Sad. I'm grateful that Gov. Romney has the strength and willingness to put up with this garbage so he can help his country. Lord knows he didn't have to.

This comment was not only ignorant and tacky, but disrepectful. Mr. Obama is still our Commander in Chief and deserves that respect.

Well, I can say for sure that I would have liked to take more than one swing at Romney, who was an arrogant bully starting in the first debate. He showed no respect for the President, the office of the presidency, or even the moderator. He was acting like the boss he is who expects everyone to laugh at his lame jokes and hang on his every word, whether truthful or not. Obama had no choice but to up his game. Romney was nasty, confrontational, and rude.

The weak of mind will always revert to violence as the first option to resolve conflict. Weak.

The secret service should invvestigate ALL THREATS. You can't say you would like to harm the president, then say "just kidding"- no matter who are.. Looks like he inherited his father's foot in mouth disease. Romney also called the president a liar. Is that acceptable?

LOL – – – are you kidding me ? It's a wonder during that town hall debate, that obama didn't think about taking a swing at Romney, with all the half truths, and flip flopping. I mean, during the primaries, he was trying to perceive himself as "the one" who had a "better plan" compared to all the other candidates. He was telling everybody that he was going to do this & do that, and cut the affordable health care out, and everything else you can think of, (incl. womens issues) NOW, he's changing his tune, (again) – What's he going to do IF he gets elected ? Is he going to Change his "mind" everytime somebody comes into the white house to "lobby" for whatever cause they are for ? I mean, you can't keep continuing to say things to satisfy whatever crowd you've got, at the time. He's Just Not a Solid guy. If he stays with the Issues he really and truly believes in, he may do okay, but he's got trouble with that, for some odd reason or another. I guess he wants to satisfy All the People All the Time. ( that is hard to do)

Isn't this a little strange Romney's son wants to TAKE A SWING AT OBAMA for telling the truth. Romney has been a known liar and called as much for years!!! During the Republican Primary Race NEWT GINGRICH AND OTHERS HELD TO PUNCHES IN CALLING ROMNEY OUT ON HIS LIES, AND SAYING THAT HE HAD NO CORE AND WOULD SAY ANYTHING TO GET ELECTED. So, whats up with Tagg here?!!....at first I thought he was just a little racist as Mormons have only a few years ago let go of their inferior view of Blacks as being equals in the human race...but no I thought, it's not that at all...IT'S THAT FOR THE FIRST TIME, MITT IS GETTING WHIPPED BY SOMEONE ELSE AND NOT TAKING THE BRUISING THAT NEWT AND OTHERS TOOK DURING THE REPUBLICAN PRIMARIES :-)!

Even the moderator pointed out that his dad is a liar. This is a campaign that publicly stated that it won't be run by fact checkers.

Dear Tagg, when your father says one thing to one group of people and then a totally contradicting thing to another, I was taught that was called "lying". So, yes, your father is a liar. Take the swing at him please. And it's nice to see those supposed Mormon values on display in your statement, both on the lying and the swinging.

They should ask him how he would feel if people were calling his dad a Nazi, Communist, Terrorist, Racist.... Ask this adult how he would have felt as a child to hear the kind of outlandish, hateful venom that has been spewed from the right at Obama. He's frustrated already? He better hope his dad doesn't win.
