Salt Lake Tribune throws support behind Obama

(CNN) – The Salt Lake Tribune announced in an editorial published Friday its endorsement of President Barack Obama for the 2012 race, questioning the "pragmatic, inclusive" former Massachusetts governor's change into Republican nominee Mitt Romney.

"The president has earned a second term. Romney, in whatever guise, does not deserve a first," the Utah newspaper said in the editorial.

The Tribune threw their support behind then-Illinois Sen. Obama in 2008 and Republican George W. Bush in 2004.

Utah is a reliably Republican state that split overwhelmingly for Sen. John McCain in 2008 - 63% support to Obama's 34% - and will likely hand its six electoral votes to Romney in November.

Obama, however, narrowly bested McCain in the urban area and home to the Tribune in Salt Lake County, 49% to McCain's 48% in 2008.

In its endorsement, the paper notes the state's large Mormon population and lauds the former Massachusetts governor and member of the Mormon Church for his "adeptly bipartisan governorship of a Democratic state, and his head for business." Furthermore, the Tribune applauds Romney's efforts in saving the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympic Games, which was wrought with financial corruption and scandal prior to the former business executive's take-over of the Games' management.

The editorial called Romney the "Beehive state's favorite adopted son," but ultimately cited his change in positions from the Republican primary contest as reason to support the Democratic incumbent.

"The Salt Lake Tribune editorial board had hoped that Romney would exhibit the same talents for organization, pragmatic problem-solving and inspired leadership that he displayed here more than a decade ago," said the Tribune.

"Instead, we have watched him morph into a friend of the far right, then tack toward the center with breathtaking aplomb. Through a pair of presidential debates, Romney's domestic agenda remains bereft of detail and worthy of mistrust."

Of more importance, the paper said, was Romney's lack of clarity and specifics on his proposal to reduce the deficit, asserting that GOP nominee's plan doesn't add up. The paper also pointed to Romney's now-infamous "47%" comments caught on a secretly-recorded video at a private fund-raiser in Florida suggesting that nearly half of Americans will vote for Obama because they are reliant on government services.

In throwing their support behind Obama, the Tribune editorial cites the president's signature health care initiative, the Affordable Care Act, and the administration's concerted effort to encourage economic growth, passing stimulus bills that "helped stop the hemorrhaging of public sector jobs" after taking office amidst a devastated economy in 2009.

The paper highlights Obama's foreign policy credentials but said the endorsement, however, comes notwithstanding what the editorial calls a "glaring exception, still unfolding" - the September attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya that killed four Americans including U.S. ambassador Chris Stevens. The Obama administration has come under fire in recent weeks for its failure to directly call the attack terrorism in the days following the event.

We all know Utah will vote overwhelmingly for Willard, but thank you for your support of our president.

"The president has earned a second term. Romney, in whatever guise, does not deserve a first," the Utah newspaper said in the editorial.

Nah, it doesn't say much. Just wait and see how the state votes. The Tribute is hardly a "spokes person" for the state. Don't get too excited.

Is it also pretty bad that the Orlando Tribune, who endorsed Obama in '08 is now endorsing Romney in '12 ? It's a newspaper, not the entire state. Besides, people don't realize that Salt Lake City is only about 50% Mormon these days. And those "non-mormons" go out of their way to be anti-mormon in many cases.

Another reason showing newspapers have outlived their use in today's society. Unbiased media outlets showing biased support for a candidate. Very sad how they try to control and manipulate society by abusing the platform that was given to them. All Newspapers regardless of who they openly support should be put out of business

  16. My thoughts on this article.

This is really interesting that the SLC paper endorsed Obama. Let me say first that I am a left liberal, proudly pro-Obama supporter, and I hate to admit this, but I can see from this endorsement how the Right Wing comes up with its conspiracy theories about the "liberal media" bias. Even in the right-wing, Mormon state of Utah where the Olympics were run by Romney, its interesting that the main newspaper in town supports Obama. The truth of the matter is that creative class people who work in journalism are educated enough to see the big picture. When the Right Wing denounces "liberal bias" and the "liberal elite", what they are attacking is NOT corporate elite power but rather the perceived "arrogance" that they see in creativity and intellectualism itself.

NOW WAIT A MINUTE!! Romney "saved the olympics" in Utah. He was the best governor ever in Mass. And, he born in MI. What in the world are those people trying to tell the rest of smart people? Obama is winning ALL of those states! ALL OF THEM. When are we going to smell the coffee??

  18. Facts don't Lie

the Obama people clearly paid somebody off at this Utah paper..a red state to endorse him. That Chicago machine is at it again. Of course this would probably the reply from the right.

The best part of all of this is their REASONING for endorsing the President:

"Romney's lack of clarity and specifics on his proposal to reduce the deficit, asserting that GOP nominee's plan doesn't add up."

Whether Utah votes for Obama or not this says it all. Romneyhood is nothing but a liar and people are waking up. We know he has the Mormon vote, because if they don't vote for him he will send less money to the charities. We all know that he is bribing them just like the rich republican businessmen are threating their employess with (if they vote for Obama they will lose their jobs). What a way to win the presidency by lying, cheating, threating and stealing, because Romney has no convictions or morals and he is a wimp. Way to go republicans, sorry you have to stoop so low to win.

    LOL – Are U Kididng me ? Salt Lake Tribune ?? WoW !! OMG . It's like : instead of saying : "Houston we've got a problem" it's : "Salt Lake City" YOU'VE Got A Problem.
Let me be clear : If romney gets elected – he will be a 1 termer – then after the voters see what he really IS : especialy when he put this country in a VISE, incl. the working class citizens, especially the ones who make less than 100K per yr. – – there will be a democrat in the white house for the nxt 8 yrs.

May the Best Man Win – – 2012
    Hillary – 2016 (with a 'surplus' in – 2018 )

It's not overly surprising that the Trib backs Obama. It's not run or staffed by the LDS church. The reporters there are actually allowed to think for themselves & tell the truth. Now, if the Deseret News (owned by the LDS church) were to back Obama, there would be a civil war!

"Ha Ha Ha not everyone in Utha is an idiot"
Could you at least spell Utah right? It's four letters. The Salt Lake Tribune is not the voice of Utah, the anticipated outcome is definitely in Romney's favor. Why? He's a "mormon", and he's republican. We'll probably vote for him despite our political opinions. How's that for fair? And the result of his flip-flopping has made him more attractive to my moderate leanings, so it all works out in the end..

    Why is anyone surprised?
McRobme lies so casually on a daily basis.
His campaign is one of lies and obfuscations-man has off shore accounts, swiss bank accounts, cayman accounts..he's everything noone should vote for- a snake oil salesman and not a particularly good one at that...
Man made his money destroying American companies and off shoring the American peoples' jobs- then lying saying he didn't.
I'm surprised anyone who professes to believe in teh word of God can support someone who lies so transparently.
