The problem with presidential debates

(CNN) -– For 25 years, a private non-profit group of roughly a dozen people, operating without oversight, has been running America's presidential and vice-presidential debates.

To some, the Commission on Presidential Debates is a political hero, providing thoughtful stability and ensuring that U.S. presidential candidates do in fact debate each other. Multiple times. In a dignified setting.

Giuliani, O'Brien take part in fiery debate

(CNN) - Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani argued Monday on CNN that President Barack Obama should have known from "common sense" that the U.S. consulate in Libya was at risk prior to last month's deadly attacks in Benghazi.

When pressed further on his point, however, Giuliani engaged in a heated exchange with Soledad O'Brien, anchor of CNN's "Starting Point."

Akin compares McCaskill to a 'dog' playing 'fetch'

(CNN) – Missouri Republican and Senate hopeful Rep. Todd Akin compared his Democratic opponent, incumbent Sen. Claire McCaskill, to a dog who plays "fetch" for higher taxes and regulations from Washington and brings them back to Missouri.

"She goes to Washington, D.C. and it's a little bit like one of those dogs, you know 'fetch,' and she goes to Washington, D.C. and gets all of these taxes and red tape and bureaucracy and executive orders and agencies and she brings all of this stuff and dumps it on us in Missouri," Akin said Saturday at a fund-raiser in Springfield, Missouri.

Poll: Obama 50%-Romney 45% in Ohio

Boca Raton, Florida (CNN) - As President Barack Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney get ready to face off in their final debate, a new poll in the crucial battleground state of Ohio indicates a close contest in the race for the Buckeye State's 18 electoral votes.

According to a Quinnipiac University/CBS News survey released Monday morning, 50% of likely voters in Ohio say they support the president, with 45% backing Romney. Obama's five point lead is right at the edge of the survey's sampling error. It's also half the 10-point 53%-43% lead he held over the former Massachusetts governor in a Quinnipiac poll conducted late last month, prior to the debates.
