Reno, Nevada (CNN) - Mitt Romney made an appeal to struggling families at his second Nevada rally in as many days, telling voters he understood their troubles and could help.
The candidate's retooled stump speech, featuring a series of empathetic stories about down-on-their-luck Americans – a senior on Medicare, a daughter working to pay off her college loans, a middle-aged homeowner whose property lost value - came as the GOP presidential nominee sought to capitalize on a surge in the polls this month that has fueled new optimism about his election effort.

"This election [is] about your family and families across this country, and the choice we make will have an enormous impact on your family,"
Romney told an audience of roughly 2,500 people Wednesday in Reno – a smaller audience than the candidate had drawn at several joint rallies with his running mate Paul Ryan over the past week. "And I understand what it's going to take to get this country strong again and to provide the answers that your families need."
Romney's stop in Nevada underlined his renewed confidence following a series of debates with the president this month.
"We've had four debates and he hasn't been able to describe what his plan is to get this economy going," Romney said at a Reno events center across the state from where he spoke a day earlier. "You can boil what he's saying down to four simple words, and that is: 'more of the same.'"
President Obama enjoys support from Latinos and unions in Nevada, and has generally edged ahead of Romney in polls. But with two stops in two days and polls that show the race here is tightening, the Romney campaign is forcing Obama to defend a state he easily won in 2008.
The president will rally supporters in Las Vegas Wednesday night.
Hours in advance of that visit, Romney tied Obama to the housing crisis that has hit Nevada particularly hard.
"If he's re-elected I'm convinced you're going to see the values of your homes continue to bump along in the basement," Romney told supporters.

How can you possibly know what our families are like when you have never been in our shoes. You two are like the tin man, no heart what so ever, you may care about your family but you care nothing about people. Go peddle your snake oil in the Caman Islands with your money.
We can't afford healthcare reform...but we can afford tax cuts for the rich, bush tax cuts and new 20% (which means they probably won't pay anything), we can afford trillions in wasted military spending, and trillions to develop economic growth in the middle east (he said that last debate) but of course, we can't continue medicare, social security or feeding the poor and educating our children. Those are the 'handout' crowd. America...if you elect this guy you deserve what you get.
The best thing for able bodied americans, men and women, right now is jobs. Romney/Ryan 2012
Wow!!! Another re-boot by Mittens, that was quick it only been a few days. What a joke of a candidate!!! Mittens need to hurry up and lose so he can go spend some of his money in the Cayman Island.
I remember when Ann Romney tried to relate to single mothers. Ann had nannies to help raise her kids and also she didnt work, so how can these people relate to struggling people. They are pathetic, people need to wake up. America cannot let these people into the WH in 2012.
With the Republican vow to make the President a ONE TERM President, it is obvious that the President is at fault for alll all the problems America is facing today ! ! ! !
Retooled AGAIN?! Seriously... how many times does this guy have to shake the Etch-a-Sketch?! Oh... that's right... he can shake it until November 6th, until he's sent to the dustbin of history...
Romney lying with a straight face again. He meant what he said about that 47% that he so loathes. He has never pretended that he was going to do anything for the average middle class American. His only plan is to shift more wealth to the 1%, and tell you some crumbs are going to rain down on you from their overfilled table. Romney and Ryan have a very third world vision for America. Don't be a Romney stooge, vote in your own self interest, vote for Pres. Obama.
I'll believe Mitt when pigs fly!
All Romney ever does is retool his message to play to who he's speaking to. Is this really news? The man has no morals or convictions, he just wants to be president really really bad.
what about the families in freeport IL. What about the people that worked for the company Delphi where romney pocketed money from. He doesn't care about people, he is making millions off of the company in freeport. The people that are voting for him think he is going to create 12 millions jobs, what Romney is saying is he is going to outsource that many jobs. I know i've been through it under the bush years Also, i have a few friends that have found jobs under the obama administration. VOTE OBAMA!!!!
Willard's a liar. He already said to a room full of millionaires that he doesn't care about 47% of this country – the people that aren't wealthy. I don't believe a word he says because what he says changes every day. He can't take a stand on anything, not one thing, and stick with it – why should anyone believe Willard when he constantly speaks out of both sides of this mouth. He will only work for more tax breaks for the wealthy period, he doesn't not care for the working class at all. My vote is for President Obama.
Medicare and college loans? Ryan wants to do away with Pell Grants. He has vocally opposed using Pell grants, the foundation for most college attendees hope for a better education.
Romney wants to shift responsibility for Medicare to the states. In that scenario cash poor states will basically have nothing to offer people. More wealthy states that are likely to have Republicans in power will also give very little to the poor and disadvantaged.
If a senior can afford to buy Mitts alternative health care options, insurance companies can pick and choose who is least likely to cost them. They can legally "cull" the less healthy from their roles.
In ten years this will leave millions of people with no health coverage. Senior citizens would die, which fits Mitt's plan as he stated on the campaign trail that the problem with social security is that seniors live too long.
Sure Mitt understands the plight of the poor – and he suggests that you fill up each of the several Cadillacs that you own only once per week – that will help you save some money.
He is re tooling? Are u serious? Again? Who is this robot? This shows extreme weakness! U must have a consistent msg, Is the volume of the stench so loud that integrity and character have been thrown out?
So what plan does he have? Oh yeah. Cutting entitlement programs and giving small business (rich) more money so they can lay off more workers and make more profit.
"Planned Parenthood, we're going to get rid of that." – Mitt Romney
"I will veto the Dream Act." – Mitt Romney
"Let Detroit go bankrupt." – Mitt Romney
"I would never send American armed forces into Pakistan unilaterally, even after a high value target." – Mitt Romney
exactly how is changing your position every week, leadership? I am very concerned that we have no idea, which romney will be president
I read all there pro-obama or should i say anti-rommey comments and have to chuckle about all the adlibbing and cute little derogatory name calling. You have nothing new to say-its all sound bites from obama himself that you continue to recite. Just shows how naive you all are. This guy has a hidden agenda and hes playing you for fools. You libs are all robots for this sham of a presidency. Obama could care less about you but he ll continue to throw you little treats that you gobble up at his feet. I actually feel sorry for you-you arent the brightest our country has to offer. Just look at your spelling once ha ha ha ha
Since Monday, the momentum and standings have swung to Romney, a situation which has the Dimcrats in a dither.
4 years of failure is enough for thinking Americans to stomach. Vote R & R to return America to stability & prosperity.
Four more years of the Obama gang, and we can learn to live the rest of our lives in the 3rd world, because that's where his policies are designed to put the US, and half the public is stupid enough to allow it.
The world will really ignore us if Romney becomes President. This man changes his mind every other day. Plus the extreme right is taking us back to the mentality of the Middle Ages.
Its a sad day when things like "positioning, retooling, posturing, refocusing, etc" are used to draw people, it show what a portion of America has become – so less about substance and so much emphasis on marketing.
For Romney to say he "understands" the struggles of the poor & middleclass is a Blatant Fabrication! He has never been poor or even middleclass so he understands Nothing! He might as well say blah, blah, blah, because that would make more sense! President Obama is a man of the people, for the people & that means All the people of this nation! He has been just like all of us & is an American success story! Not just because he was a middleclass Black kid who became President, but because he has accomplished so much good, Despite the GOTP obstruction to stay true to the 1%s taxcuts & feverish attempts to make him 1 term, including their own failures to help in our recovery! The same failures they are hanging on him, now! Romney is as severely conservative as he claimed & is a supporter of Mourdock, who wants to legislate his personal beliefs that pregnancy by ra.pe is a "gift from God"! Obama Nov 6!!
If Romney cared about the middle class or the struggling families he would try to strengthen unions, not destroy them. History proves that we have a strong middle class when we have a higher number of Americans belonging to unions. The middle class makes a descent living, we have a good economey, and good public schools. The facts prove it, look at the states in the deep south like Al,MS,TX then look at say where I live in MO, or IL,MN. We have higher number of union memebers, more middle class, and better schools. The middle class will strive with strong unions. I understand, and even the most union leaders that we have given their selves a black eye in the past. We are working very hard to over come our mistakes of the past. Today's unions at least the construction trade unions push for top quality, and top production, a drug free work place and highly trained workers.
