Ames, Iowa (CNN) - Mitt Romney renewed his bid for independent voters Friday, pledging in a formal speech to unite a fractious Washington and deliver "big change" to reset the country's course.
"This election is a choice," Romney told more than a thousand voters on a windy Iowa afternoon, saying Americans faced "a choice between the status quo - going forward with the same policies of the last four years - or instead, choosing real change, change that offers promise, promise that the future will be better than the past."

The speech, billed by aides as a major address on the economy, was largely a repeat of remarks Romney had given on the stump at rallies across Ohio a day earlier. The GOP presidential nominee did not outline new policy positions, instead using lofty rhetoric to make his final pitch to undecided voters.
Reading remarks from a teleprompter – an aid the campaign uses only during formal speeches – Romney criticized the president for focusing on "the small and the petty" in his campaign and failing to capitalize on America's great potential during his term in office.
"President Obama frequently reminds us that he inherited a troubled economy," Romney said. "But a troubled economy is not all that he inherited. He also inherited the greatest nation in the history of the earth."
In response to a slightly better-than-expected third quarter economic numbers released Friday, Romney said the nation's rate of growth was still "discouraging" and fell far short of what Obama had promised four years ago.
And the Republican nominee continued to moderate his appeal to voters in a key swing state in the final days of the election, focusing particularly on the theme of bipartisanship and saying he would make good on Obama's promise in 2008 to tame partisan rancor in the nation's capital.
"The President's campaign falls far short of the magnitude of these times. And the presidency of the last four years has fallen far short of the promises of the last campaign," Romney said. "Four years ago, America voted for a post-partisan president, but they have seen the most partisan and political of presidents, and a Washington in gridlock because of it."
Even before Romney gave his remarks, Democrats were predicting he would deliver little that was new.
In a statement released after the speech, Obama campaign spokeswoman Lis Smith sought to tie Romney to "the same failed policies that crashed our economy in the first place."
"True to form, Mitt Romney's most recent 'major policy speech' included dishonest attacks and empty promises of change, but no new policy," Smith said. "That's because all Mitt Romney has is a one-point economic plan that he's been running on for two years: the very wealthy get to play by a very different set of rules than everyone else."

Where's The Change? Where's The Transparency? Where's the debt reduction? Where are the jobs?
The "small & the petty"? You mean like when Mourdock claims that a woman who's been raped should consider the resulting pregnancy a"gift from God" or when Walsh claims theres no such thing as abortion for the health/life of the mother, due to technology? These issues are neither small nor petty! Maybe he means sticking him w/the term "Romnesia"! Well, he has a "severly conservative" case of it & thats a fact! Romnesia- Amnesia of Convenience!! Obama Nov 6!!
Dude, he's got a 5 point plan...
Imagine each point is a finger, and imagine your assets to be your genitals. So he's going to take his 5 points and protect your assets so hard, your won't know what to do with yourself.
Romney, big hat, no cattle in sight.
You who will vote for BHO will be getting the surprise of a lifetime when you find out what his plans are for our great country. And it will not be pleasant. The end of freedom and greatness for USA
Romney and his rich cronies will fill their pockets and BANKRUPT THIS COUNTRY!
This is mainly because he has no specifics to give. None of his policies would work in the real world.
What is Obama's plan? Oh yeah, thats right, MORE DEBT!!!!!!
"Romney pledges 'big change' but offers few specifics"
Why Start now?
We're in a big hurt people. Big promises on both sides, and neither one has clue what they're promising the country.....
This lying doof is running out of time to lie and he's caught in his lies...Pres. Obama outclasses this moron mormon on all sides.
Where's The Change?
Romney gave an economic speech and offered zero details. If Romney gave any kind of specifics on anything, now that would be a "big change."
Mitt Romney's Economic Plan is very clear. But the "Plan" Obama put out in his glossy new pamphlet is completely missing key details. nothing more than warmed over rhetoric from his convention speech. I'm sure the pamphlet was an afterthought. I suppose his Political Advisers told him American voters are stupid enough to believe that if it is newly printed on shiny paper then it must have something new in it. So again they insult the voters. Independents see through tricky little scams like this. Obama has no plan and the only ones fooled were already voting for him.
You mean like Romney's plan to put the government between a woman and her doctor?
Or, like his plan to give the rich even more tax cuts?
Or, their plans to keep millions of citizens from voting while they gin up the voter rolls?
Or, Ryan's plans to end Medicare and Social Security-
Yeah we won't like THAT much!
MY VIEW:: M. R. has HIS plan, but HAS NOT described what and how they will work? President Obama, understandably has had MORE problems hit him than any other President in years, YET, all the reports that I am hearing and reading, says we are making improvements, not great but in the right direction. IF M. R. is elected you can expect all of that to STOP! He will implement his plans! And then of course as the republicans are now known as the party of NO, totally disregarding US and our problems, whose single goal is to get Obama out! Who is to say that IF M. R. is elected that the democrats will become the party of NO? So far WE have heard 4 republicans put their feet in their mouth on abortion, etc.. TRUE COLORS? TIP OF THE ICEBERG? WE expect an apology? WHY? This is the same thing as in courts when someone says something and the judge tells the jury to disregard it! YOU HAVE ALREADY HEARD IT, and put it in your mind! Spur of the moment thoughts, expressions, speech, can be very revealing. At any rate I & my family members will be voting for President Obama/Biden as we see him as the one better to continue to work on solving our problems.
About as many specifics as the president offers in his 20 page brochure he just printed last week. When's that headline coming CNN? Oh, right, we wont hold the president's feet to the fire for anything.
Surprise, surprise! Mr. Romney does not share any specifics. Much of the time he spent at Bain he oversaw mergers and takeovers of businesses. This included the pink slipping any number of employees. All the while Bain made a fortune ding this.
As smaller companies were taken over or were part of a merger we began to see the loss of small companies and small businesses. Where are all the privately owned drug stores? Where are all the small manufacturing plants? Where are the small food producing plants? How about Shaw's, Hannaford's, Stop and Shop, etc.? Who owns them and what countries are they in? Even the larger plants Kraft are owned by conglomerates. Where will the jobs come from? Many jobs were sent oversea. He did not object to that and even helped it happen. Now he is being portrayed as someone who will save the American worker. Neither he nor the Republican Party are going to save jobs or provide jobs. They all helped us to lose them.
Romney is big on words, small on specifics.
Four and The Door
Romney STILL has no plan, and what he claims he can do he can't.
Mr. Obama only needs to keep doing what he has-
36 months of economic growth
ends one war, ending the other.
Look, if Romney was so good- why didn't he run again for Governor? Oh, yeah, that 36% approval rating may have had something to do with it.
