Romney guest mash-up: Everybody loves Meatloaf?

Canton, Ohio (CNN) - As the standard-bearer of the conservative party, Mitt Romney may not draw as many Hollywood endorsements as his rival.

But what his celebrity backers lack in quantity they make up in unconventional appeal.

– Check out the CNN Electoral Map and Calculator and game out your own strategy for November.

Case in point: aging rocker Meat Loaf, who wore a sequin-sleeved blazer to endorse Romney in a halting but heartfelt speech Thursday.

The entertainer didn't perform his signature hits, but he did paint in stark terms voters' choice this November.

"This is the most important election in the history of the United States," he told an audience in Defiance, Ohio. "Because there has storm clouds come over the United States!"

"There is thunderstorms over Europe," he continued, warming to the weather theme. "There are hailstorms, and I mean major hailstorms, in the Middle East."

Meat Loaf also offered a dubious defense of Romney's running mate's controversial budget plan.

"I want you to know at 65 that Paul Ryan has not pushed me off the cliff in a wheelchair," he joked.

The next evening, "Everybody Loves Raymond" actress Patricia Heaton cracked some edgy jokes of her own at another football field rally in North Canton.

Telling the audience she came from an Irish-Catholic family, Heaton invoked Romney's Mormon religion – something he does not frequently mention on the campaign trail.

"I have over a hundred first cousins on my mom's side, so we're giving those Mormons a run for their money," Heaton said.

After joking about nearby Akron ("I was born on the west side of Cleveland. You know what Cleveland's motto is? At least we're not Akron!"), Heaton couldn't resist poking fun at the well-toned body of Romney's clean-cut running mate Paul Ryan.

"I have to tell you, backstage I didn't recognize him with his shirt on," she said, adding: "And I did wear orange, not only because I'm a [Cleveland] Browns fan, but I was afraid Paul would have his shotgun."

On Friday, as has become common over the previous weeks, Romney supporters were also entertained by a folksy band who voiced their support for the candidate in between twanging riffs. The parade of country singers who have backed Romney are perhaps an unusual fit for the former governor of Massachusetts, whose running mate has joked is an aficionado of elevator music.

None of these high-profile fans could equal the pithiness of Romney endorser and football great John Elway, who announced in October he was backing Romney with perhaps the briefest speech on record.

His entire statement, including a reference to a winning football game a day earlier, is below:

"I must say today has been a very good day," Elway told an audience in Denver Oct. 1. "Not only because of what happened yesterday, but because I get the opportunity to introduce to you the next president of the United States, Gov. Mitt Romney."

I've lost complete respect for Elway and Meatloaf; never was much a fan of Heaton's politics ...

@Ray E. (Georgia): "After 75 years of Liberal Polotiics you would think everything would be fixed wouldn't you? So why we in this huge mess????"

The 40 years' economic expansion starting with FDR was dramatically slowed starting with Reagan's failed trickle-down, supply side economics. Clinton – a Democrat – left us with a surplus; Bush evaporated that with two unfunded wars and unfunded Medicare Part D.

You're complaining because President Obama hasn't fixed your mess in 4 short years – in great part because Republicans have made making him a one-term president their highest priority and using the Senate filibuster over 270 times (a record) in their efforts to keep him from having any legislative successes, regardless of the harm it has done to our country and her people.

And now you want to elect Mittens who is proposing all of the same FAILED POLICIES of the GOP. Talk about dumb!

    Obama/Biden 2012 = The only sane choice

That piece was a bit, heck quite, disturbing and funny in a macabre sort of way. It shows the twit as an uncomfortable mutant among those even stranger than him.

Is this the same function where Romney stood up and lied to 12,000 people that Jeep was shipping jobs to China? Just another reason not to vote for him. All he does is lie, lie, lie, about anything to get elected. FACT: Jeep is doing so well that they are opening a plant in China to make Jeeps for the Chinese. Look it up...Romney is lying once again!

Let me get this straight. After President Bush and the mess he left behind, they needed someone to clean the mess up. Everyone was in a panic! No one really wanted to run after the Bush mess. Finally, a winner! OH NO – the winner is a black man. Wait, he's half white! No you wait. Do you see black or do you see white. OK, my bad. Now that he is to take the place of President, and by the way is doing a good job on jobs, look at the chart, and with no help from the party of NO. One term, just be glad they did not tar and feather you. Mr. President, the NO party did not appreciate you doing so well after the big mess, and also the party of just say NO. SURPRISE!!! Everyone knows you and the government, with the help of the people, has given more to the success of pulling this nation together than anyone. If we the people want to be pulled apart, again, by all means, Romnesia is the one for you.

Meatloaf hasn't produced any contribution to music. What's he got to do in politics? Since the political argument seems to be settling down to questions of personal income (accepting that the anti-abortion choices have already been made), then why does Meatloaf prefer Romney? Could it be protecting his income? For that matter, Republican policies are better for my income, at least in the short run. But I care more about the long-term success of the country, and of the future of all of us sharing the country. So I hope the American public is smarter than a mediocre rocker who is willing to characterize his intelligence as meatloaf.

What a joke to call Mitt a "standard-bearer" for the conservatives. Even though I never liked any of them, at least people like William F. Buckley could try to rationally discuss what they believed. But, recently, the GOP hasn't offered any REAL people. They seem to favor cardboard cut-out puppets that the GOP pulls the strings for.

I understand that Mitt and I know McCain used to bear some semblance to "real" people. Now, they are just the mouth-piece for whatever the GOP wants them to say. And basically, the message is only "no taxes for the wealthy."

  21. Just a thought

@ Ray (E) of GA, you are total cartoon character. Anybody reading your posts would only shake their head wondering what rock you crawled out from under. This country is on the road to recovery from the worst GOP/Re-dumblican policies ever seen.

in 2008 and starting '09, we were losing nearly a million jobs a month....now we are adding jobs
in 2009 and 10, one in five homes were underwater, now the housing market is on the mend...(ask anybody genius)
Americans on welfare??,,,,really? That comment doesn't even qualify for a response. I'll just say this, when 9 million americans lose jobs as a result of stupid, vapid GOP policies, welfare sees and increase because of "cause and effect".

Tell ya what, Take a course in Macro Economics and get back to us. In other words, learn ya something so you don't prove your complete ignorance

What kind of decision making does Romney have? Romney drags out Meatloaf after the hideous meltdown ML had on the celebrity apprentice. ML was frightening on the stage with Romney at the close. Is this the best Romney can do?

If Obama had not been 'hog-tied' by republicans since day one of his presidency, our economy would be in much better shape. Considering what Obama has been up against the whole four years, it's amazing just how much he accomplished. Just goes to show how incredible he really is! The GOP lust for power took over as soon as Obama won in 2008 and THAT has been their only objective – 'get Obama out'.They very obviously do not want a black man in the whitehouse and have never recognized Obama as their president. No white president has ever been treated with such disrespect as Obama. He has been held to a much higher standard than any previous president all in order to show their superior intellect......it's just plain shameful. Such behavior should be prohibited in the 21st century and the main offenders should be held accountable. People all over the world see the American right as ignorant and too extreme to have any power. it's a pity so many Americans are fooled by con man Mitt Romney, which proves just how many ignorant people there are out there!! Wake up America – before America becomes completely plurocratic! These people don't care about you, they care about POWER! You will see, if Mitt Romney wins the whitehouse!
