Obama campaign unveils response to Romney auto ad

(CNN) - President Barack Obama's campaign on Monday rolled out a response to a television advertisement quietly put on Ohio airwaves this weekend which levels a dubious charge against President Barack Obama.

Obama's ad opens with the headline to Romney's 2008 op-ed ("Let Detroit Go Bankrupt") and says the candidate "turned his back" on the auto industry when it was on the rocks.

Romney opposed Obama's 2009 bailout of General Motors and Chrysler, saying it would lead to the industry's collapse and instead arguing for a "managed bankruptcy" model.

"And now, after Romney's false claim of Jeep outsourcing to China, Chrysler itself has refuted Romney's lie," the Obama spot continues. "The truth? Jeep is adding jobs in Ohio."

The Obama ad references an ad which began airing in Ohio on Saturday.

"Obama took GM and Chrysler into bankruptcy and sold Chrysler to Italians who are going to build Jeeps in China," the narrator says. Recent reports have said that the majority owner of Chrysler, Fiat, is considering producing its signature Jeep in China.

Chrysler Senior Vice President of Corporate Communications Gualberto Ranieri refuted such reports, writing in an online posting, "Let's set the record straight: Jeep has no intention of shifting production of its Jeep models out of North America to China," wrote on blog.

The ad follows comments the GOP presidential candidate said in a Friday campaign stop in Defiance, Ohio, just down the street from a General Motors plant.

"I saw a story today that one of the great manufacturers of this state, Jeep, now owned by the Italians, is thinking of moving all production to China," he said.

Romney's ad makes no mention that the plan "to build Jeeps in China" would have little impact on Ohio, where the ad is running - as Jeep has planned an expansion into China's growing automobile market rather than a move to source production from there for export.

Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt told reporters in a Monday conference call that the Romney ad "reeks of desperation."

The Romney campaign did not highlight their ad with a press release to reporters, as they have with nearly other spot, but CNN's ad tracker Kantar Media CMAG, spotted the ad running on broadcast television stations in Toledo and Youngstown, Ohio – two Ohio manufacturing strongholds.

This spot may be an effort to undercut Obama on an issue his campaign believes could tip the balance in their favor in Ohio: the 2009 bailout of the auto industry.

The government dolled out some $60 billion and has received at least $33 billion back so far.

On the campaign trail Monday, Biden slammed the Romney claim.

"Have they no shame?" Biden asked at a rally in Youngstown, Ohio. "Romney will say anything, absolutely anything to win, it seems."

Obama's campaign announced his spot, "Collapse," would run in Ohio, and an Obama campaign aide told CNN the spot will run in Toledo, although it is possible they will add more markets.

The Romney campaign said the Obama campaign was making "desperate arguments."

“It appears the Obama campaign is less concerned with engaging in a meaningful conversation about President Obama’s failed policies and more concerned with arguing against facts about their record they dislike,” Romney campaign spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg said in a statement.

Do not fall for the crap Romney and the Republicans are selling. They will lie, cheat and steal to get into the White House. It doesn’t matter how Romney and the Republican try to spin their policies, the American people know how disastrous those policies have been for this country, especially for the Middle Class and less fortunate.
Americans are not stupid. How can anyone even thing Romney’s policies will be better for this country. Romney and the Republicans policies from 2001 to 2008 brought this great nation to its knees, their policies caused the Great Recession, their policies wiped out almost 10,000,000 jobs as a direct result of the Great Recession, their policies wiped out retirement savings for tens of millions of Americans as a direct result to the Great Recession, their policies took a $1 trillion surplus to a $13 trillion deficit, their policies resulted in the decline in the percentage of Americans that are in the middle class, their policies resulted in tens of millions of Americans without healthcare, their policies resulted in millions of Americans losing their homes, their policies will be detrimental to Latinos and all other minorities, their policies will result in another war in the Middle East, and the list goes on.

No Americans in their right mind will believe that Romney/Ryan policies will be better for the Economy. The only way for anyone to think that is if they are suffering from total amnesia. People will remember what happened in 2007/2008 and the years leading up to the Great Recession. It was the exact same policies that Romney is advocating now that caused the Great Recession. We are not that dumb to think that these same policies that caused the Great Recession will somehow magically make the economy better.

I guess Romney/Ryan think we are all stupid and don’t know the truth and can’t remember the dark days of the great recession of 2007 and 2008 and the years leading up to it.

The choice is clear. Do we want to go back to the exact same policies (Romney/Ryan current policies) that brought America (this great Nation) to its knees or do we want to continue to build on the recovery.

Hey, Romney/Ryan since the 2 of you are really serious about people contributing to the Red Cross disaster charity, how about calling your buddy Donald Trump and ask him for that $5 million he offered Obama or maybe that doesn't fit into your real intentions.

Again as always Obama and his Union buddies don't tell the whole story.

For once I would like to see Obama tell the truth about almost anything the whole truth will not happen now or ever he has never been wrong about anything just ask him.

    Ed1... so....

What is the whole story? Did you forget to add that part?

Or is this absolutely spot on like we all know.

Hours after he said it at the plant, Chrysler called him a liar, THEY ARE ADDING JOBS IN OHIO.

Rather than back down on being called out on a lie... they rolled out AN AD REPEATING THE LIE!!!!

Do not fall for the crap Romney and the Republicans are selling. They will lie, cheat and steal to get into the White House. The Republican idea to make things better is to do the same things that caused the problem. I am sure they would have no problem rehiring a financial advisor whose investment policies almost wiped out most Americans life savings. Basically that is what the Republicans are proposing. They are saying lets fire the guy that stabilized your investments and grow it to almost what it was prior to 2007 and let’s rehire the guy whose policies almost wiped it out. Do they think most Americans are stupid?

Here is the real hoax. The Republican idea to make things better is to do the same things that caused the problem. Here is something to think about. Republicans would have no problem rehiring a financial advisor whose investment policies almost wiped out their life savings. Basically that is what they are proposing. Republicans are telling us to fire the guy that stabilized and grow our investments to almost what it was worth prior to 2007 and rehire the guy whose policies almost wiped it out. We have to be really stupid to listen to them and rehire a guy whose policies wiped out investment in the first place. I would hope that Americans are smarter than that.

Here is a simple way of looking at who is best for the economy. Would you invest with a guy whose investment policies wiped out your investment portfolio or would you invest with a guy whose investment policies stabilized your investment portfolio and is currently growing your portfolio. Even Romney wouldn't invest his own money with the guy whose policies wiped out everyone’s investment and now he wants us to do it. So why would anyone even consider voting for any Republican.

How can any Americans think that Romney/Ryan policies would be better for the Economy. The only way for anyone to think that is if they are suffering from total amnesia. Have people forgotten what happened in 2007/2008 and the years leading up to the Great Recession. It was the exact same policies that Romney is advocating now that caused the Great Recession. Are we that dumb to think that these same policies that caused the Great Recession will somehow magically make the economy better.

But GM and Chrysler did go bankrupt. The difference? Obama turned his back on the American taxpayer and now we are out $27 billion for the "great deal" he made. Most of Bernie Madoff's clients got a better deal than Obama got for the American taxpayer.

But I have one more question for him. Is he trying to take credit for Ford, too?

I think Romney, Donald Trump, Koch's brothers, Sheldon Adelson, and all other Romney's Rich Republican Campaign contributor should donate to RED CROSS, all those $10 million dollars or $5 million dollars. Also, I think it was about time that Obama released this ad in response to Romney's lies. If we elect Romney, we are electing a Lier as our president.

Romney said that Jeep is sending jobs over to China!! Gues what he LIED!! The CEO of Chrysler came on and said it wasn't true. Ohio better back Obama, or if Romney gets in and bankrupts the auto industry and you all lose your jobs, I can sit back and say you deserved it.

Anyone can go back and read the article that Romney wrote that created the headline in the sign on the fence. Romney keeps trying to change the story and he hopes people are too lazy to check it out. I hope he is wrong about that. The man changes his stories so often that I think he can no longer distinguish between what is true and what he made up. Dangerous kind of person to run a country.......don't you think?

This is what I read in Bloomberg: "Fiat Says Jeep Output May Return to China as Demand Rises
By Craig Trudell – Oct 22, 2012 11:10 AM ET"

"Fiat SpA (F), majority owner of Chrysler Group LLC, plans to return Jeep output to China and may eventually make all of its models in that country, according to the head of both automakers’ operations in the region.

Fiat is in “very detailed conversations” with its Chinese partner, Guangzhou Automobile Group Co. (2238), about making Jeeps in the world’s largest auto market, said Mike Manley, chief operating officer of Fiat and Chrysler in Asia. Chrysler hasn’t built Jeeps there since before Fiat took control in 2009."

Based on these reports that are out there I would safely say that Romney is not, not lying.

The only thing Romney has told the truth on is his refusal to release those tax returns.

It's high time the word "liar" is branded to Romney for good. I never liked the word flip-flopping b/c it was too nice for Romney. Everything from climate change, abortion, taxes, healthcare, foreign policy...you name it, Romney has deliberately deceived each audience he has spoken in front of.

The media needs to stop with this horse-race BS and call out Romney for what he is - a liar. What's worse is that his record entails looting companies and states, taking the resources for himself and his cronies, and hightailing it out of town while Rome burns behind him. Ask the folks in Massachusetts (who know him best) why he is losing the state by over 25 points.

One more time. Romney. Is. A. Liar.

As the polls are showing (even though Romney and his team are lying about his supposed "momentum"), people are on the verge of sending him packing. Lets up the ante and send a message to all politicians from here on out that you will not lie like what Romney is doing and get away with it.
