Romney campaign aids Sandy relief effort

(CNN) - Mitt Romney is deploying his campaign bus in Virginia on Monday, but not so that the Republican presidential candidate can make his closing arguments in the battleground state.

With eight days remaining until Election Day and a major storm slamming the East Coast, Romney is putting some of his resources onto preparation and relief efforts. President Barack Obama, meanwhile, canceled Monday and Tuesday campaign events and returned to the White House to monitor the storm and federal government response.

"Governor Romney's concern is the safety and well-being of those in the path of Hurricane Sandy," Romney campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul said Monday morning.

The campaign is loading supplies into a campaign bus for delivery in Virginia. In Virginia, North Carolina, New Hampshire, and Pennsylvania - all battleground states in the presidential campaign and all expected to be impacted by this storm - Team Romney is collecting supplies at their campaign offices for local relief efforts.

Obama's campaign said is watching the storm and continuing to focus on the election in areas where the storm is not hitting.

"The campaign is closely monitoring the storm and we are taking all necessary precautions to make sure our staff and volunteers are safe," spokesman Adam Fetcher said. "Where it's safe to do so, our historic grassroots organization is running at full speed in eastern battleground states to persuade undecided voters and get our supporters out to the polls between now and Election Day."

Both campaigns launched digital efforts, posting links to the Red Cross' donations site to their websites and social media pages.

Both Romney and President Barck Obama's campaign said they were suspending email fundraising messages to supporters from Virginia, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, New Jersey, and the District of Columbia, CNN reported on Sunday.

The candidates modified their campaign schedules, pulling out of or canceling about a dozen events between them. Romney scrapped several Sunday events in Virginia and campaigns on Monday in Ohio, Iowa, and Wisconsin.

Obama returned on Monday to the White House to monitor the storm and federal response. Press Secretary Jay Carney told reporters on Monday that Obama would meet with top administration and cabinet officials.

@ Helen: If the storm causes a disaster like expected, there is NOTHING Mitt Romney can do except pretend he is president. He has no real authority and can't make any decisions. I know he gotta keep up the pretense, but it will be Papa Obama and yes the GOVERNMENT that will be expected to help the people. Now of course Mitt Romney would write a check to help the victims, but we all know that won't happen. He will merely give out cheap bottles of water and dollar store batteries!

Willard how about a 1 million dollar gift to the non-mormon AMERICAN RED CROSS. We know you extra money in those accounts in the Cayman Islands. Also you could spend the next few days helping people recover from is hurricane. You know working with your hands and get dirty.

Maybe obama will be flying out to las vegas like he did after the 9/11 terrorist attck in benghazi. Still hasn't answered "what did he know and when did he know it". The families of the 4 murdered Americans aren't getting any answers. Don't u stupid people see that he doesn tcare about anyone but himself. He is an out of touch millionaire, not one of u. He is incompetent and has dragged this country down. And biden has early signs of dimensia. Two clowns running the whitehouse. They r a disgrace. President Romney will bring honor back to this country.

"Awesome. And what is Barry doing? Making a speech? It will be refreshing to have someone who's not a political hack in the White House...."

If you are suggesting that the President of the United States - by talking to those on the East Coast - encouraging them to prepare for a natural disaster - is giving a campaign speech, then Mitt Romney absolutely deserves your vote. America, itself? Not so much.

Paul Ryan plans to "bravely" rescue people in Oklahoma!!!! If you think Romney/Ryan care about anyone that will be harmed by this storm you either watch too much Fox News or you have brain damage. Romney/Ryan grew up rich and they only care about wealthy people. If poor people, women, and minorities die in this storm Romney/Ryan will just consider it healthy downsizing.

My main problem is not even Mitt Romney himself (though i have a problem with him) but the people who knows this guy is phony... very phony and are still voting for him. What has America turned to?

Ooops. Looks like they'll be skipping MD, NJ, NY, CT, MA, etc. I guess they are storm proof? My geography ain't sa good and I know I'm not as smart as those fellas. I guess they'll help them by delivering campaign signs and goodwill. I'll admit, it's more than I'll do, to be honest. I guess the Robme campaign will launch a "massive" recovery offensive. Anything for a vote...in key states. That looks horrible on paper and in strategy. "Save the Battleground states!!". Isn't that kinda the message coming across here? I guess he figures they will be part of his 47%

Obama: Doing the business of the country.

Mittens: Clown bus full of pretense.

    CNN: Focused on Mittens.

    Any questions?
    ------------–

Nope. Your post and the following post sums it up nicely ... point by point.

    @Anzz

At least Mitt is trying to be prepared to help these people. Obama went back to the white house to wait and see what happens. Romney is prepared to be in the middle helping... A lot better than Katrina or Benghazi.

Romney / Ryan 2012!!! Oh, I just added those exclamation marks too... do ya see them?

Romney didn't learn anything from Katrina when then Louisiana Mayor Ray Nagin should have used buses for rescue that could have saved lives and he failed to do so. Supplies don't help someone who has no transportation to get out of the path of the storm but then again Romney just assumes everyone has 2 Cadillacs like his wife.

I would think that a campaign bus being sent in during a crisis would be a distraction and possibly get in the way. Maybe he should just let the Federal Government Department – FEMA – do what they KNOW to do and not what the think they should do in order to look presidential or like they care.

Good old Mitt ! During one of the debates he said he wants to do away with, or cut back on Fema. That is what people need to help them. Not a few blankets and bottles of water which is all his bus can assist with. As " St. James Place " said, how about donating some of those millions to the Red Cross and the Salvation Army.

Romney wants to get rid of FEMA - after one high-profile bus loaded with water will save everyone in 11 states, if it doesnt get blown off the 1st over-pass. ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

You cannot trust Romney with anything he might ask ID the survivors to find out if they are republican or a Mormon before he save them.

@Laverne – Cheap bottles of water is still clean, purified water and you can buy more of them to help more people, but we wouldn't want that.

@GI Joe – The article stated, "The campaign is loading supplies into a campaign bus for delivery in Virginia."
Then for the other states, "In Virginia, North Carolina, New Hampshire, and Pennsylvania – all battleground states in the presidential campaign and all expected to be impacted by this storm – Team Romney is collecting supplies at their campaign offices for LOCAL RELIEF efforts." The bus is for one state.

@Anonymous – It did cover Obama's command. He cancelled events and went to the White House to monitor the storm and direct federal aid.

@St. James Place – He has probably give more to American Red Cross that $1 million. Not all his charity donations were to the LDS church.

"Romney is prepared to be in the middle helping..........."

Yep, he's prepared to get in the way, showing us, once again, his total lack of judgement. Have you noticed how
much his bus is trying to look like Air Force One? All blue and white. It reminds me of his "grand entrance" into
his campaign "State of the Union Address" style, red carpet, shaking hands like the President does when he
    enters the chambers?
This guy is so eaten up with envy and covets the job of President so much he makes me sick. Just stay out
of the way MItt, and let the people who have years of experience dealing with catastrophes do their job.
And for goodness sake, keep that bus out of the way of emergency vehicles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

YAY! We get to watch Romney use the infamous Bush/Cheney BAIT-AND-SWITCH regarding Hurricane Sandy!
His campaign bus is parked in Virginia, to BAIT the media for a "heroic" photo op, just like he did after the Republican convention. The SWITCH is that Romney isn't actually going to ride out the storm on his bus n Virginia, slogging through the water to pull storm vivtims to safety, provide emergency medical care, remove fallen tree debris, or repair downed power lines, etc. No, he'll go somewhere cushy for his own safety, and then magically reappear once the worst has passed, and we'll all see the comical photos of him again handing out water bottles with rolled-up sleeves. If he really cared for the people endangered by the storm, he would leave the area to free up the manpower providing his security detail, like Joe Biden wisely did in Florida. So that's a perfect example of the kind of Presidency we can expect from Romney: a man who in times of crisis thinks about photo ops and water bottles, just like Bush did after Hurricane Katrina. DON'T BE FOOL TRICKED BY ROMNEY'S BAIT-AND-SWITCH!
