Ryan urges supporters to assist in storm relief

Fernandina Beach, Florida (CNN) – Paul Ryan said at his only political event of the day that he and Mitt Romney are staying in touch with regional leaders and offering assistance to those impacted by Hurricane Sandy.

"Let's send our prayers and our thoughts to the people in the Northeast. Look, Floridians, you are no stranger to big storms. You know better than anyone on the need for communities to come together and for neighbors to help one another," Ryan said Monday afternoon.

He continued, "Mitt Romney and I, we are staying in touch with regional leaders. We are offering assistance. We are collecting storm relief supplies in our field offices in Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, up and down the Eastern Seaboard."

The Republican vice presidential nominee was on a flight to Florida when the presidential campaign announced it was canceling a number of events Monday and Tuesday out of sensitivity for the millions of Americans in the path of the storm.

He was scheduled to attend three campaign events but Ryan ended up having just one. At the sunny outdoor rally just north of Jacksonville a large sign that said "We need a real recovery" displayed at most events was removed from behind the stage before he arrived. The space was replaced with rows of people and a large flag that was hoisted in the air by a cherry picker forklift.

The vice presidential nominee recommended making a donation to the Red Cross and encouraged people to visit Romney victory centers where they are packing supplies for people in need.

"We know how to help each other in this country. If you have friends and family in the path of the storm, make sure you call them. Make sure they listen to the warnings, make sure they check on their elderly neighbors," Ryan said. "Let's do what we need to do to help them get through what is coming their due – what is coming in their way – and let's not forget the fact that this is the greatest country on the face of the Earth."

Romney's running mate will now travel to Wisconsin, his home state, where he is scheduled to campaign later this week.

How hypocritical are Mitt and the Lyin-Ryan the same people were accusing candidate Obama 2008 for being pretentious, how pretentious of them to assume the power of the presidency before our vote casted. One is a product of US congress whose approval rating is only 9% who help to hold the American economy hostage just because Obama will get a credit if the economy grows under his leadership. The other never held a job for the last decade except running for government office that he don't like.

Obama's administration is sending Federal help and funds,.. Romney and Ryan are sending their thoughts and prayers. These two neo-cons, would slash budgets, gut programs, and shut down agencies of first responders, and the American people would be left to fend for themselves in times of natural disasters. Thoughts and prayers are nice,..but they don't rebuild shattered communities.

These guys believe that neighborhoods are better suited for disasters like this. They mentioned churches helping with health care etc. They have stories about Romney helping someone less fortunate as if Romney has the right to pick who gets lucky. Helping 1,2,3,4 or even 5 people is not a policy that will give every single American a shot at success.

Ryan will probably go to an area that was already cleaned up and kick over a garbage can so he can pick up some (not tooo dirty) litter for the cameras.

    Americans help each other.
We do not shirk our responsibility to help our neighbors.
We do not relegate our responsibilities to a government that is too often run by the self serving.

I bet these two cowards, Romney/Ryan, won't call their buddy Donald Trump and ask him to contribute that $5 million to Red Cross that Trump offered Obama. Cowards.

  12. ThinkAgain: All of the GOP's policies are PROVEN FAILURES

Munster said that he and Mittens "are staying in touch with regional leaders." I hope they are coordinating with FEMA and the other folks and agencies who are REALLY in charge so they don't muck things up!

    Obama/Biden 2012 = The only sane choice

  13. ThinkAgain: All of the GOP's policies are PROVEN FAILURES

Funny to hear Munster say this, given that Mittens' campaign said early today that he was standing by the statement he made during a 2011 Republican debate that FEMA should be disbanded, and its powers either privatized or given to the states.

This completely ignores the FACT that FEMA, being a federal agency, can coordinate disaster relief for events that transcend state boundaries; it can also manage disasters on a scale that no state could absorb (for example, Hurricane Katrina did over $100 billion in damage to Louisiana alone in 2005).

Mittens 'n' Munster are so over their heads ....

    Obama/Biden 2012 = The only sane choice

If you get any storm damage in the future ,call your momma Florida and north Caroline and rest of the east coast because that's what the Ryan and romney plan calls for . The states that don't have any money already ,will be expected to solve their own disaster damages. Call god ,call your momma ,call your pastor, but don't call Washington or romney Ryan or the gop bafoons we could send the gop clown bus with a small check ,that could take a couple a Months

@MikeB: "Americans help each other. We do not shirk our responsibility to help our neighbors. We do not relegate our responsibilities to a government that is too often run by the self serving."

We are the UNITED States of America, and our federal disaster agencies and personnel provide much-needed help during these times. There is no relegation; we are simply calling upon what we as taxpayers have paid for.

Yeah, right, they care about first responders ...

Do not fall for the crap Romney and the Republicans are selling. They will lie, cheat and steal to get into the White House. It doesn’t matter how Romney and the Republican try to spin their policies, the American people know how disastrous those policies have been for this country, especially for the Middle Class and less fortunate.
Americans are not stupid. How can anyone even thing Romney’s policies will be better for this country. Romney and the Republicans policies from 2001 to 2008 brought this great nation to its knees, their policies caused the Great Recession, their policies wiped out almost 10,000,000 jobs as a direct result of the Great Recession, their policies wiped out retirement savings for tens of millions of Americans as a direct result to the Great Recession, their policies took a $1 trillion surplus to a $13 trillion deficit, their policies resulted in the decline in the percentage of Americans that are in the middle class, their policies resulted in tens of millions of Americans without healthcare, their policies resulted in millions of Americans losing their homes, their policies will be detrimental to Latinos and all other minorities, their policies will result in another war in the Middle East, and the list goes on.

No Americans in their right mind will believe that Romney/Ryan policies will be better for the Economy. The only way for anyone to think that is if they are suffering from total amnesia. People will remember what happened in 2007/2008 and the years leading up to the Great Recession. It was the exact same policies that Romney is advocating now that caused the Great Recession. We are not that dumb to think that these same policies that caused the Great Recession will somehow magically make the economy better.

I guess Romney/Ryan think we are all stupid and don’t know the truth and can’t remember the dark days of the great recession of 2007 and 2008 and the years leading up to it.

The choice is clear. Do we want to go back to the exact same policies (Romney/Ryan current policies) that brought America (this great Nation) to its knees or do we want to continue to build on the recovery.

Wow, Democrats.. what the hell is wrong with you guys, you talk and behave like hooligans,
Just like your leader, who thinks he can own the white house forever? All of you get together and won’t be able to elect him this time,
Other half of this Country’s Population has already realized that they have an alternative to this sheep in wolves clothing.
Why would you not demand from your Coward leader about what he knew and when he knew about 4 brave Americans who died in Libya.
Why did he lie to this Country, why this conspiracy.
