Auto companies hit back against Romney ads

(CNN) – Democrats on Tuesday ramped up their pressure on the Romney campaign over two new ads on the auto bailout, as each side sought to sway voters in the crucial battleground state of Ohio.

Spokespeople for Obama's re-election effort pointed to quotes from General Motors and Chrysler executives blasting Mitt Romney over a new round of ads that accuse the auto giants of shifting jobs overseas.

"The ad is cynical campaign politics at its worst," General Motors spokesman Greg Martin told The New York Times. "We think creating jobs in the U.S. and repatriating profits back in this country should be a source of bipartisan pride."

The Romney radio ad, which aired in Ohio Tuesday, claims GM plans to double the number of cars built in China and that Chrysler plans to start making Jeeps in the same country.

"Mitt Romney: He'll stand up for the auto industry in Ohio, not China," the ad's narrator concludes.

The ad follows a television spot released over the weekend, which makes the same argument and faced wide criticism in recent days for its accuracy.

"Obama took GM and Chrysler into bankruptcy and sold Chrysler to Italians who are going to build Jeeps in China," the television spot's narrator says.

Romney originally floated that idea at a rally in Defiance, Ohio last week. He quoted a report about the majority owner of Chrysler, Fiat, saying it was considering producing its signature Jeep in China.

However, the Bloomberg report to which Romney was apparently referring said that the potential move would only affect cars produced for Chinese consumers.

Chrysler Senior Vice President of Corporate Communications Gualberto Ranieri emphatically denied the possibility U.S. production would be affected, writing in an online posting, "Let's set the record straight: Jeep has no intention of shifting production of its Jeep models out of North America to China."

The ad was rated "Pants on Fire" by the independent, fact-checking group PolitiFact.com. And former President Bill Clinton and Vice President Joe Biden on Monday tag teamed in their attacks against Romney over the ad.

The Romney campaign did not highlight their television ad–or Tuesday's radio ad–with a press release to reporters, as they have with nearly every other spot, but CNN's ad tracker Kantar Media CMAG, spotted the ad running on broadcast television stations in Toledo and Youngstown, Ohio – two Ohio manufacturing strongholds.

Martin, the GM representative, said Romney's ads show that the candidate is "bereft of any fundamental understanding of the global automotive industry.

"All global manufacturers, whether General Motors, Ford, Chrysler or VW, build historically in the markets in which we sell," he continued.

Romney's campaign did not respond to a request for comment.

– CNN's Rachel Streitfel, Gregory Wallace and Shannon Travis contributed to this report.

Romney is a drag on the Republican party and I don't know whose advising him, but he's angered the people of Ohio with his lies. How could the Republicans have possibly made a Romney mistake, take a look at Christie.

Romney will lie about anything and on anyone to achieve his goals. Having someone like Romney in the White House as Potus with all the power and authority that comes with the title, along with the capability to affect people's lives, including life and death decisions associated with war is just down right scary.

The fact is it makes more sense to the Auto makers to outsource production of vehicles in China (for sale in China), versus building the vehicles in the USA and exporting them to China. That includes investing billions of dollars made in USA to those oversea plants. What the Romney Ad says is true. Could we change US Policy so we could export more from the USA? Would be nice. I am pretty sure Chrysler is owned by an Italian Corpoarion, and they benefited from our tax dollar bail out. Just like many of the foreign banks who benefited from our bank bailouts...

Mitt has never been able to tell the truth or to stick with what he said. If by some miracle he were elected president, this nation will fall to China.

  15. It is clear the candidates have different values.

In the past four days the Presidential candidates have shown their true character clearly. President Obama stopped campaigning to return to his full-time job as President to address one of the largest Hurricanes in history does not even bring up the election, got out the warnings early, worked with Governors and Mayors of the impacted areas, released funds through FEMA quickly. While Former Governor Romney releases an ad about GM full of falsities, says nothing about Hurricane Sandy until it is politically expedient to get political points, and when he is not in the news Romney fills his campaign buses with food during the crises that goes only to swing states. It is clear that one can believe what President Obama says and does, while former Governor Romney cannot be believed. Even GM (One of the biggest, oldest, respected business) has to correct Romney false claims. Elected a President should be about leadership and character, not cheap political points. Leadership and Character.

I am not that smart but I know that my intelligence would be insulted by the Romney – Ryan ticket it I vote for them, the liars. The R – R ticket is doing/saying anything to win the election at the expenses of middle class which includes the 47%.

Why does Bloomberg continue to report about Fiat continuing to consider making
Jeeps outside of N. America – then run pieces from internal spokesmen saying that' s not really what they meant. The first article was quoting the COO of Asian Operations on October 21st stating that they were considering moving production to China to build Jeeps in China for the Chinese market. So, those Jeeps won't be made by American workers –those jobs would effectively be outsourced to China.

But it gets better. Quoted in Bloomberg on October 29th (article posted at 12:40pm) the publication states that " in order to counter the severe slip in European sales, Marchionne is considering building Chrysler models in Italy, including Jeeps, to export to America."

With the Democats new love of large corporations, I'm sure that they have every confidence that this company is not interested in profits....only to keep those jobs in America. Why would they want to make a profit, after all?

Romney's lies are catching up to him. As a spoiled rich boy he's not accustomed to people questioning his version of reality. Maybe that's how some people become pathological liars. He never tells the complete truth and usually goes beyond the margin and tells an outright lie. Fact checkers prove my statement to be true. His flip-flops are just long-term lies where he switches positions to gain some advantage – in this case for political reasons. Do Republicans have any standards for character? Is racism such a powerful force in the Republican base they are willing to accept a man like Romney simply because he has white skin? Nobody could believe his economic promises – especially when the math absolutely doesn't work and he gives no explanation. He just says "trust me"... Why would you trust him?

Romney is such a liar and so deceitful!!!!!! I am amazed at anyone who thinks he would be a great president. I guess this is what has become of the republican party. I can't imagine the intelligence of anyone who would actually vote for this guy. I don't know how he sleeps nights. America is doomed if he gets elected. Romney won't be running the show. It will be Rove, Norquist, Cheney–scarier yet!!!!!!!!

Wow , but Mitt loves cars !

For all you Romney supporters , " truth hurts and the other names he posts under " . You would have loved the Auto Industry to be sold piece by peice for pennies on the dollar under bankrupcy law to a foreign investor , China , India . That's what would have happened under a Mitt Romney administration .

Ohio needs to understand Mitt doesn't have his Fathers principles and understanding of blue collar workers .
People make Corporations , and People like Mitt break them for short term profit gain . How many small bussines owners would have been hurt by Mitt Romney's " Let them go Bankrupt " response ? If your a small business owner the last person you want to take you out of the game is a guy like Romney . He dons't understand what a level playing field is ,
he never has and never will !
