Auto companies hit back against Romney ads

(CNN) – Democrats on Tuesday ramped up their pressure on the Romney campaign over two new ads on the auto bailout, as each side sought to sway voters in the crucial battleground state of Ohio.

Spokespeople for Obama's re-election effort pointed to quotes from General Motors and Chrysler executives blasting Mitt Romney over a new round of ads that accuse the auto giants of shifting jobs overseas.

"The ad is cynical campaign politics at its worst," General Motors spokesman Greg Martin told The New York Times. "We think creating jobs in the U.S. and repatriating profits back in this country should be a source of bipartisan pride."

The Romney radio ad, which aired in Ohio Tuesday, claims GM plans to double the number of cars built in China and that Chrysler plans to start making Jeeps in the same country.

"Mitt Romney: He'll stand up for the auto industry in Ohio, not China," the ad's narrator concludes.

The ad follows a television spot released over the weekend, which makes the same argument and faced wide criticism in recent days for its accuracy.

"Obama took GM and Chrysler into bankruptcy and sold Chrysler to Italians who are going to build Jeeps in China," the television spot's narrator says.

Romney originally floated that idea at a rally in Defiance, Ohio last week. He quoted a report about the majority owner of Chrysler, Fiat, saying it was considering producing its signature Jeep in China.

However, the Bloomberg report to which Romney was apparently referring said that the potential move would only affect cars produced for Chinese consumers.

Chrysler Senior Vice President of Corporate Communications Gualberto Ranieri emphatically denied the possibility U.S. production would be affected, writing in an online posting, "Let's set the record straight: Jeep has no intention of shifting production of its Jeep models out of North America to China."

The ad was rated "Pants on Fire" by the independent, fact-checking group PolitiFact.com. And former President Bill Clinton and Vice President Joe Biden on Monday tag teamed in their attacks against Romney over the ad.

The Romney campaign did not highlight their television ad–or Tuesday's radio ad–with a press release to reporters, as they have with nearly every other spot, but CNN's ad tracker Kantar Media CMAG, spotted the ad running on broadcast television stations in Toledo and Youngstown, Ohio – two Ohio manufacturing strongholds.

Martin, the GM representative, said Romney's ads show that the candidate is "bereft of any fundamental understanding of the global automotive industry.

"All global manufacturers, whether General Motors, Ford, Chrysler or VW, build historically in the markets in which we sell," he continued.

Romney's campaign did not respond to a request for comment.

– CNN's Rachel Streitfel, Gregory Wallace and Shannon Travis contributed to this report.

Romney is a shocking liar and a cheat...
I have no respect for the man, and am appalled that he has not spoken up as an advocate for women's rights, while his party promises to put women back in the stone age... he even supported Mourdock and Akin, despite their remarks about a pregnancy resulting from rape was God's will, and that women wouldn't get pregnant if they were legitimately raped. Really! How can people think this way..and how can he think himself eligible to be the leader of the free world if he will not suppor equality, or even humanity towards women?

Does Romney know what he's talking about? .... Just listen to the people that Romney's talking about say that he's all wrong. He is totally out of touch and desperate hoping that some of the 47%'ers are dumb enough to believe him.

Romney stated he will not let his "campaign be run by fact checkers". So that's an admission of him lying through his teeth about everything he has built his campaign on?

Perhaps its time that Romney leave the US auto industry and its workers alone. Maybe a real "apology tour" is in order...he should include the elderly, poor and reasonable while he is at it.

How many more distorted lies does romney need to spew from his lips before the people of this country figure out just how stupid he really is. He ought to be ashamed of himself, but then, he will say anything if he thinks it will get him elected.

So many lies by the Governor, I think his team is just tired of trying to clean up the messes he makes every time he opens his mouth. Don't know where Romney gets his info, but you'd think somebody would @ least check the facts. (I personally don't consider blog postings as reputable news sources.) But, maybe that's just my opinion.

Its becoming increasingly apparent that Mitt Romney will say and do anything to win this election! It's almost scary how far he's willing to take his blatant lies! Regardless of whether or not you like President Obama, anyone with a halfway objective mind would have to agree with that.

Romney will do anything to be president, Former president Clinton puts it this way, they messed it up for 8years ,gave Obama 4 to clean it up, then with light at the end of the tunnel, use big money, twisted logic paint Obama as the worst president ever, sound presidential coupled with the fact that he is white, get the gullible voters to vote for u, after all Obama didn't fix our mess fast enough. Mark my words,if Romney wins this election , he will turn sharp right cos he needs reelection and all these myopics clamoring for him will fill these blogs or shut up cos there won't be words to explain the fustration which they now feel.

Can you imagine this man being a US president? What a disgrace he will be to America in the sight of the whole world. This man Romney is making a caricature of democracy. And I am amazed that no one within the GOP is bringing this man to order. It looks like truth to Romney is when he tells lies, and keeps telling it. This is a Pathological problem. THIS IS VERY SCARY FOR DEMOCRACY. Democracy is being put in a serious test in America. If he thinks he can get away with lies, then, I am afraid that he may have plans to even rig the election. Romney will do anything to be president (Newt Gingrich quote)

I am amazed by this blatant lies the Romney camp tells even when called out on. Does it mean that the true doesn't matter? Is he not a trained bishop? How could a man of this caliber play so loose with the truth? What does that mean for the potential Romney presidency? Does character matters? What are his core convictions? I will have hard time trusting this man with my vote.
